Ubuntu :: Can't Reach 1680x1050 Res
Apr 30, 2010
Intel motherboard DG33TL, chipset G33. I use the on-board graphics. The display is an Fujitsu-Siemens 22" with 1680x1050 res. The latest four versions including 10.04 of Ubuntu selects wrong resolution at boot up, 1024x768. There is no option for higher res. It should be 1680x1050 and I can't change it. Have not found a solution. It works on other quite modern motherboards, but just NOT DG33TL.

I'm running 10.04 desktop on a Dell PowerEdge T710 connected to a Dell 22" LCD (E2210). The T710 uses a Matrox G200eW chipset. For some reason, I can't set the display resolution to the native res of my monitor (1680x1050). For what it's worth, here are the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

I'm trying to help my brother get his monitor to display the correct 1680x1050 resolution. He just installed Ubuntu because he was getting a blue screen with windows. If I can't help him fix this I'm sure he'll decide Ubuntu sucks and go right back to windows

The native resolution from my LCD monitor is 1680x1050, but the list of "NVIDIA X Server Settings" only allow me to set it to maximum 1360x768. The monitor is conected via VGA cable and it is recognized as CRT-0. When I run the 'xrandr' command from terminal, it shows:
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1680 x 1050

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04, and after I rebooted to finish installing my Nvidia drivers, the bootsplash reset itself to a resolution of 800x600. Is there any way to change it back to 1680x1050?

I performed a clean install of Fedora 13 (LXDE remix) over the weekend, and have been very pleased with it so far. However, I encountered a setback this morning when I brought my laptop into the office and hooked it up to an external Viewsonic VG2030wm LCD monitor. I can no longer utilize the native resolution of 1680x1050, although on F11 I could do so using the commands:
Code:
xrandr --output LVDS --off && xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1680x1050
The 1680x1050 mode is listed by xrandr (see below). However, when I run the above command the external monitor repeated alternates between a black screen and displaying my desktop (I'm not sure if the resolution is correct -- it's hard to tell).

I have this 20"-21" Gateway display that has a resolution of 1680x1050, and will not work proper at a lower resolution, it squishes up and does not fit to the desk top but I can't find a way to manually set the resolution. I am using Ubuntu version 7.10.

I just bought a new system with NVIDIA GeForce 9100 integrated graphics. I used [URL] to install the NVIDIA drivers and utilities. If I use sax2 from the commandline in runlevel 3 (or from KDE) and select LCD 1680x1050 for the display, I am able to test and save the configuration. If I then init 5, KDE starts with the proper display settings. NVIDIA X Server Settings tool shows that I have a Gateway FPD2275W(which is what I have) with display dimensions 1680x1050.
I even have the option to change the refresh rate to 75. I never told the configuration tools what kind of monitor I have, so something detected it. The problem comes when I reboot. The display reverts to 1280x1024 which is not correctly proportioned for my display. The NVIDIA tool then shows some kind of generic monitor, and does not give me any options to configure the display correctly. My system has an AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 820 Processor.

I have a problem reaching some hosts on the Internet, namely newegg.com and djangoproject.com. On the same machine and network connection using Windows 7 the host names resolve properly and I can connect to them. The host names are resolving in Ubuntu, but I cannot connect to them.

I'm using Ubuntu on my laptop but I'm having a small problem. The network is working fine except for the fact that I can't reach anything on my LAN (can't even ping the router), but everything on the outside works just fine. I can even visit my webserver if I type my public IP.
Where should I begin looking for faults?
Here, enjoy some data. I'm using my wlan0 interface, not sure whether eth0 works or not.

I have just installed ubuntu Server with Apache2, PHP5, MySQL and PhpMyAdmin.
Everything works fine when I access the server on the LAN. I have forwarded port 80 in my router to the LAN ip of this server. (I have other windows based web servers so I am familiar with port forwarding) however when I try to access the server from the true static IP outside the LAN I cannot reach it and the connection just times out with the Ubuntu server connected if I use canyouseeme it says port 80 is closed. If I replace the Ubuntu server with another server I can reach this just fine from outside and canyouseeme says the port is open. So I am pretty darn sure the router is correct and that there is some config problem with the Ubuntu box, but I cannot find it. the ports.conf file has listen 80 in it and the apache2.conf includes the ports.conf file.

I run 11.04 from a USB-stick according to instructions on ubuntu.com (pendrivelinux) with persistence. I use an Acer Aspire One D255E (10" screen notebook).I cannot reach the Windows partition. (Win7 starter. It is not hibernated.) It was OK at first but the error then occurred suddenly. It has happened before and the only thing that helps is reinstallation. The problem causes me much trouble. I must find a way to reach the files. (There is no problem reaching the 4.3 G android partition. I always unmount Win before shutting down, but that does not seem to be the issue. When I tried to investigate the problem earlier I intentionally left Win mounted at shutdown, but it could not provoke the issue.)

I am running a server that needs both a wired and wireless connection with static IPs, with wireless as the default link. I'm using the SMCWUSB-G for wireless. I was running Debian for a while and had some routing tables set up as in [URL].... Everything worked until I recently switched to Ubuntu Server 9.10. After the switch a weird behavior showed up: if wlan0 is down, eth0 works fine. But if wlan0 is up, I can't reach any host with either interface (even nameservers or the gateway I am supposedly connected to). ifconfig indicates that nothing is wrong. It's really not clear what is causing this problem. It seems like something has to be wrong with both the wireless hardware/drivers and the routing tables in order for turning wireless on to interfere with "ping -Ieth0".

I used my computer this morning before leaving for the office, but when I returned this evening, I am unable to reach the internet. Also the light on the mobo where the ethernet cable is plugged in is steady yellow.
My limited experience would tell me it is a hardware failure, but it seems so strange with nothing happening during the day. How might I best diagnose the problem from within Ubuntu (10.04)?

In Ubuntu 9.10 (fresh install, not an upgrade from 9.04) on an ASUS EeePC 900, I was using wireless networking at home, which worked well. I took the netbook to work a few times and did not using it at home all that period of time. I connected it as a wired network (DHCP) at work, and it "just worked" fine (no configuration was needed). Now I tried to use it at home and wireless no longer works for all users. In System > Preferences > Network connections I can access the wireless configuration and it is still there, still with all the correct settings as worked before. However, in the network manager I access from the upper panel via the antenna icon, it now only lists a Wired network. The wireless network isn't in the list at all. No upgrades were done. I do those from home and tried to do one this morning but since wireless did not work I could not accomplish it.
I could hook it to a wired network, so if fixing this needs to upgrade something, that's doable (but I'd think it should not be needed since wireless did work before). I was going to try things like delete all networks and start again, but since that might lose information about a possible bug, I'm holding off.

I'm running ubuntu 9.04 and I have set up 2 ip aliases using the /etc/network/interfaces file http://pastie.org/775037 -- when I ping the main address 10.0.2.16, all works fine, same with the first alias 10.0.2.22 -- but I can't reach the 2nd alias 10.0.2.23 I get the following from ping:
PING 10.0.2.23 (10.0.2.23): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2

4 5 00 5400 06eb 0 0000 3f 01 5e81 10.5.0.34 10.0.2.23
My machine's IP address is 10.5.0.34 I can't figure out why I can ping 10.0.2.22 but not 10.0.2.23 -- seems like there is probably some kind of routing thing that I'm missing, but I'm confused how it would have gotten set up for 10.0.2.22 but not 10.0.2.23 -- hopefully someone out there has an idea -- or can point me to references where I might be able to learn how to debug routing issues on a network?

This has probably been beaten to death, but I can't find anything that fits my exact situation (maybe I'm using the wrong keywords, sorry).
Server:
eth0 - external NIC, DHCP IP from ISP
eth1 - internal NIC, static 192.168.0.1
DHCP running on eth1
IPTABLES set up to masquerade on eth0
I have a computer connected up via server's eth1. It's IP is 192.168.0.201 (/etc/init.d/networking restart) gives me a DHCPOFFER and everything, so DHCP seems to be working fine.
Server:
can access internet I can ssh into 192.168.0.201 (even though it seems to take longer than usual)
192.168.0.201:
can ping server (well duh, I ssh'ed in from the server) cannot access internet for DNS on the internal NAT I'm using the same DNS servers as the router, so the server's
resolv.conf:
nameserver 69.169.190.211
nameserver 208.72.160.67

I have a Windows XP virtual machine under Virtualbox PUEL 3.1.2. I have always been able to browse the Web or do anything else I wanted over the network.
Suddenly, the guest XP machine can't reach the Internet any more. There is no indication of any problem with the network connection. I checked my router, and the virtual machine is indeed getting assigned an IP address. So why can't it reach the internet?
Yes, the virtual network adapter is in bridged mode. It always worked that way before. I can see local network shares from the virtual XP machine, and even reach the Apache server running on the host OS (Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit).
Also possibly significant: Even though the virtual XP machine is detected by the router & assigned an IP address, the printer attached to the virtual XP machine cannot be seen by another Windows machine (a real one, not virtual) on the network. I never had a problem sharing the printer before. I have to share it from a virtual Windows XP machine when I'm running Ubuntu because there are no Linux drivers available (it's a Winprinter).

I have installed also Vista on my PC, but "Documents and Settings" f.e. is void if I mount the Vista partition. In this case its not very important. But a week ago i'd run a XP-Laptop with 9.04 live-CD for backup. That worked fine (The XP was very damaged). I put the 40GB data on my PC through the WLAN during one night without any aid else. All the XP files are well accessible. And I put it back later on a fresh XP.But what would have happen with a Vista-Laptop? Anyone an idea how to reach all Vista or 7 files with a live CD? Or at least from my installed 8.04 to installed Vista.
I think it works alternatively from Win7 running using a USB hard drive adapter if you change the rights on Vista or 7 on the connected hard drive. Not tested.

I've set up ubuntu server 10.04 x64 with kvm and bridged networking and installed win server 2008 as a guest os. The guest os has full access to the network including lan/wan but the host os can only reach my lan and not the wan. This is true even when the guest machine is powered off?I have to admit that my knowledge of networking, particularly with respect to linux is very flakey but surely if the guest has internet access this should also apply to the host? My only suggestion is an issue with mac addresses but i don't know where to start. Has anybody ran into this problem before?

Recently I've been unable to load web pages, hosted on my Ubuntu Guest in Apache, from my OSX Host. In fact, I can no longer even ping the Guest OS from the Host. In the past, when I did ifconfig on the Guest, I got an IP of 10.0.1.n. Now I'm getting 10.0.2.15--the default NAT Address. The thing is, I didn't change any settings recently. What I did do is run software update for OSX, Ubuntu, and updated VirtBox.
Current Versions:
VirtBox 4.0.8 r71778
Host: OSX 10.6.7
Guest: Ubuntu 11.04
why I can no longer access my Guest OS from my Host? I spent hours on this last night, to no avail. What would cause the Guest IP to change from 10.0.1.n to 10.0.2.15? As I say, I manually made no config changes.
