Ubuntu Networking :: Server + KVM. Guest Os Can Reach Wan But Host Machine Cannot?
Oct 13, 2010
I've set up ubuntu server 10.04 x64 with kvm and bridged networking and installed win server 2008 as a guest os. The guest os has full access to the network including lan/wan but the host os can only reach my lan and not the wan. This is true even when the guest machine is powered off?I have to admit that my knowledge of networking, particularly with respect to linux is very flakey but surely if the guest has internet access this should also apply to the host? My only suggestion is an issue with mac addresses but i don't know where to start. Has anybody ran into this problem before?
Recently I've been unable to load web pages, hosted on my Ubuntu Guest in Apache, from my OSX Host. In fact, I can no longer even ping the Guest OS from the Host. In the past, when I did ifconfig on the Guest, I got an IP of 10.0.1.n. Now I'm getting 10.0.2.15--the default NAT Address. The thing is, I didn't change any settings recently. What I did do is run software update for OSX, Ubuntu, and updated VirtBox.
why I can no longer access my Guest OS from my Host? I spent hours on this last night, to no avail. What would cause the Guest IP to change from 10.0.1.n to 10.0.2.15? As I say, I manually made no config changes.
I have set up my guest OS in VirtualBox so that it has a static ip and is using a bridged adapter. As a result, I can see the webserver that's hosted in guest from my host OS's web browser. However, for some reason my current setup does not allow my guest to reach the internet. What settings do I need to enable both?
I have a Windows XP virtual machine under Virtualbox PUEL 3.1.2. I have always been able to browse the Web or do anything else I wanted over the network.
Suddenly, the guest XP machine can't reach the Internet any more. There is no indication of any problem with the network connection. I checked my router, and the virtual machine is indeed getting assigned an IP address. So why can't it reach the internet?
Yes, the virtual network adapter is in bridged mode. It always worked that way before. I can see local network shares from the virtual XP machine, and even reach the Apache server running on the host OS (Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit).
Also possibly significant: Even though the virtual XP machine is detected by the router & assigned an IP address, the printer attached to the virtual XP machine cannot be seen by another Windows machine (a real one, not virtual) on the network. I never had a problem sharing the printer before. I have to share it from a virtual Windows XP machine when I'm running Ubuntu because there are no Linux drivers available (it's a Winprinter).
I'm trying to ssh into a virtual installation of ubuntu I have, named "ubuntu-x86" but I can't get it to work for some reason. I have two network cards, both assigned to NAT, on the virtual machine, but one has a static IP address, while the other uses DHCP. For some reason, the command:
I couldn't find a clear answer to this, but is the linux-image-virtual package for host machines that will contain VMs, or a VM-oriented kernel for guest OS (ubuntu)? I have some guest VMs running on Microsoft's Hyper-V, and was looking for some further optimizations.
How can I connect to Linux (which is in a VM) from the host PC using putty? I can ping the 192.168.1.108 from my host PC. And there is sshd process running on Linux. I choose the SSH to connect, but gives error.
host is windows 2003 server 64-bit guest is ubuntu 9.04 server 64bit Qemu : 0.11.1 Qemu manager: 7.0
from Qemu manager, if network card is using User Networking, it's a NAT and I can see that Guest Ubuntu has an ip address 10.0.2.15 and is able to access the internet. However, as Guest ubuntu is running server so I want to do use Tap networking and I assue with Tap, the Guest ubuntu will get an ip address which is in the same subnet as host machine by dhcp. so from Qemu Manager 7.0, I changed Network card to be:
NE2000PCI Vlan Number =0 VLAN Type: Tap Networking Mac address: tap0's mac address from host TAP Network Adpator: Tap0
Note that tap0 was created by openvpn. and then fired Ubuntu guest, ifconfig shows no ip address on eth0 (which has the same mac address as Tap0) so the guest Ubuntu has no ip address and can't access public.
I am running a server that needs both a wired and wireless connection with static IPs, with wireless as the default link. I'm using the SMCWUSB-G for wireless. I was running Debian for a while and had some routing tables set up as in [URL].... Everything worked until I recently switched to Ubuntu Server 9.10. After the switch a weird behavior showed up: if wlan0 is down, eth0 works fine. But if wlan0 is up, I can't reach any host with either interface (even nameservers or the gateway I am supposedly connected to). ifconfig indicates that nothing is wrong. It's really not clear what is causing this problem. It seems like something has to be wrong with both the wireless hardware/drivers and the routing tables in order for turning wireless on to interfere with "ping -Ieth0".
This is a RHEL 5.4 install. I did a fairly routine install setting up a static IP address of 10.5.96.10, a subnet mask of 255.255.254.0, and a gateway of 10.5.96.1 with the standard DNS setup for this network. These are all standard network setting for this network and otherwise work fine on other systems. The IP, gateway, and subnetmask all appear correctly on all relevant configuration files. This server can not ping any other system on the network and can not ping its default gateway. No other systems can ping this one either. Also this system can not ping "localhost" or its own hostname. The hosts file contains the line:
[code]...
I can ping 127.0.0.1 and 10.5.96.10 and it works fine. Also the firewall is disabled. I know I probably can't get a straight forward fix with the information I have on hand right now, I'm more of a Debian guy, so there might be some Red Hat intricacies I'm not familiar with. I think I had a CentOS install some months back that had this issue and I don't remember how I fixed it, or if I even did. I might have just replaced it with Debian. That's unfortunately not an option this time around since it's not my box.
i have sun Virtual box installed on my centos as my host os and centos as guest os.The ip on Sun virtual box virtual interface is10.0.2.15 and the ip on the physical machine is 192.168.1.11.when i try to ping the ip from my vps on centos to my physical machine it pings but it does't work when i try to ping my vps ip from my physical machine. Please recommend the route enteries i need to do in physical machine
Not sure if this post belongs here, but here it is.
Host: Win server 2003 Guest: Ubuntu server
Host: IS able to ping guest. Firewall is OFF. NOT able to access guest (which is a web-server) at browser. Guest: NOT able to ping host. Running a web server, you can check the website: (pegajosa.com) is running under that virtual Linux server.
Problem: guest needs to access host's sql database and/or any resources.
My Windows guests see my VMware Host Only folders as \.hostShared Folders. But when I try to see them from a Linux guest, all I get is frustrated. No permutation of that seems to work. Because the Windows guests see the shared folders I know the host is doing its part in providing them. After two days of not finding an answer on the VMware Workstation forum I finally figured out that the problem really is how to look for them with Linux. With Linux I can turn off all NICs accept the Host Only NIC, put smb://172.16.138.1 into the address bar and see all the shares on the host, but not the folder designated as the host only folder. How to look for the shares with Linux?
I have installed Red Hat Eterprise Linux as a Guest OS using VirtualBox on the Host OS Windows XP SP 2 on my PC. I want to access my local / intranet web site from this Guest OS which is running on the top of on Windows XP, the Host OS. I am not sure as to what IP Settings I need to do. Though I am able to access Internet from both the OSes. The IP of this Guest OS is:
I have installed Microsoft Self Loop Adapter (Autoconfiguration IP Address: 169.254.25.129) on the Host OS Windows XP. There is another adapter: VirtualBox Host-Only Network whose IP Address is: 192.168.56.1. So, how can we access intranet web site from the Host OS to Guest OS and vice versa. I also want to access this virtual Red Hat machine /console from within windows XP using PUTTY application. From Windows XP the Red Hat machine is pinging. But when I use the IP to access the machine through PUTTY it doesn't work.
I used to be able to access the web server I had running on my guest OS in Virtual Box from my host OS. I also had it set to the network settings of "Host Only Adapter". Then I needed to access the internet directly on the gues OS, so I changed my settings on the guest OS to "NAT" (in virtual box), and in /etc/network/interfaces, I removed the loopback stuff and the static IP I'd put in. Now no matter what I do, I cannot get it back to being accessible from the host os! I even did a completely NEW install of Ubuntu guest OS in Virtual box Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Host OS: OpenSUSE 11.3 VirtualBox: 3.2.6
how to connect OS "ubuntu 9:10" as the host, with Qemu as a guest.?I can not connect from the host to geust, how to connect??I use Samba to connect the host to the guest.I was able to ping from guest to host, but from host to guest can not ping .. why?

I have VMWare on a notebook, guest Windows running on Linux host. The network in that virtual machine is configured as NAT. I want to share/transfer files from Linux (host) to Windows (guest). So I leave sshd always running on the notebook, I go into Windows and run an SSH/SFTP program. My Wifi router has address 192.168.1.1, my desktop has address 192.168.1.2 and my notebook has address 192.168.1.3. On the notebook, that SSH/SFTP program connects to 192.168.1.3 (i.e. the notebook itself) and everything works fine. But it's a notebook, and when I leave home with it, 192.168.1.3 is no longer accessible. How can I let the guest OS connect to the host OS when I'm away from my Wifi network?
I am running VMware workstation on a Linux host and WinXP guest using NAT. I have shared a folder on WinXP, and I am able to mount it on the linux host with: mount -t smbfs -o username=Administrator, password=mypasswd //192.168.100.129/Shared /mnt/tmp This works fine. However, I want to mount the same folder from a different linux machine (not the host).
I added port forwarding in /etc/vmware/vmnet8/nat/nat.conf: [incomingtcp] #445 = 192.168.100.129:445
If I run: mount -t smbfs -o username=Administrator,password=mypasswd //external_ip_number/Shared /mnt/tmp
I am getting: mount error 112 = Host is down Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
It doesn't work even if I try the above command from the linux host itself. It only works if I use the internal IP number. I suspect vmware is not forwarding port 445 but I am not sure how to verify it. I am not running smbd on the linux host, in case that make any difference. I didn't think that was required because the server is really on the WinXP and the linux is just a client.
I'm looking for a SIMPLE solution for printer sharing. I have an HP printer attached to my Linux host (prints fine from there). I want my XP box to be able to use this printer as well. I can ping my XP box from my Linux box (and vice versa), and the XP box has the HP print driver installed. When I go into my XP box and try to add a printer, I click "A network printer or a printer attached to another computer", then "Connetc to a printer on the Internet or on a home office network" and enter my printer.I'm using the printer name as show in CUPS. I also tried it without port 631. Either way, I get an error message saying "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.
My knowledge of networks is very limited. I have googled and googled how to print to cups from Windows. I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed and have a win 95 installed as a guest machine in Virtualbox. I have found hundreds of articles similar to this: [URL]. Every article talks about cups print server's ip address, which always seems to begin with 192.168. I'm not sure I have understood what the print server IP address is. Is it the same as the IP address I get every time I start my computer? In that case it would be problematic since it's a new address every time. If it's not the same, how can I find out the ip address of the cups.
Debian Testing host, Winduhs XP guest. Winduhs is not allowed to directly access The Internets, and I am not setting up bridging as that makes it possible for the guest to mount layer 2 attacks on the LAN. I need for the guest to tunnel through the host without being able to see anything on the host, so it can then get access to The Internets, while being protected by iptables (Shorewall).
Used to be with VMware I had host-only set and the guest in a different class c (192.168.2.1) from the host (192.168.1.1) I turned on ipforwarding, set Shorewall rules, and it all worked. Now I have everything set with VirtualBox, and it does not work. Guest can ping its interface but not host. Host can ping vboxnet0. Host is supposed to masquerade guest's 192.168.2.1 through to the default out at 192.168.1.1, but it's not. I think a clue is in routing, but I don't know what's wrong.
I have read many, learning linux,apache,samba,vsftp,ssh..etc from this forum but now i am realy stucked and confused. My samba server has always been reached from internal aswell external networks.
I have switched 5 months ago to Telfort network ( i am not sure... ) but as far as i know it was no poblem to connect the samba server with windows explorer everywhere. No i get the only the login screen when connecting from outside the network and when filling in the credentials it just come back with the login screen. I don't have any problems internal when connecting to these shares and supplying the credentials.
it was possible to run a script (something.sh) on a server when a button on a webpage is pressed. I already have Apache set up and I will set up php if I have to.
I'm setting up my server under CentOS 5.5 (text mode) and I installed cherokee server but I couldn't reach it with the ip given by ifconfig. So I figured it might be an problem within cherokee. I also wanted to install webmin so I did that to see if I could reach that one. But also the webmin server is not reachable (I know the port number should be behind the ip ). So if I look up ifconfig I see the server has got an local ip (192.168.1.42) but I can't reach it from another computer in the same local network.
I have just upgraded to 10.04 (not ideal I know, thought I would give it a go). Now the machine is only accessible via its IP, not host name. I reinstalled Samba, but still not working
I am currently running ubuntu on a qemu-kvm virtual machine, and the host is fedora. I would like to mount a folder of the host machine on my VM, but never succeeded. The result of the command is :
root@armnlib-kvm:~# mount -v 192.168.1.10:/nfs /nfs mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon mount.nfs: timeout set for Thu Jul 7 06:02:43 2011 mount.nfs: text-based options: 'addr=192.168.1.10'
I have a VPS from Providerservice and I am their customer for over a year now. They've been great throughout the year. They had awesome support and awesome Network quality. I Host GameServers and since the last month, my Servers have been giving big lag jerks to all the clients connected. Like one big lag jerk every 5 minutes. When such a thing happens, the first thing I usually check is the Network. From 10 different machines, I did MTR traceroutes and there was not even a single packet that was lost so I was sure that the Network is not causing it. I observed my CPU usage, RAM usage, HDD usage and everything was normal but GameServers still lagged. Now today, I reloaded a complete new Debian OS and copied the Game Server files exactly from my other machines.
There was no extra program or software installed on the server, but that didn't help remove the Lag. So now I'm sure its not my VPS that causes it. Such a thing happened with me before. No Network packets were being lost and my VPS showed CPU/Ram/HDD to be normal. I asked my Provider and they said one of our user is spiking the CPU with a large number of SQL queries and that's why your lagging. But I talked to this company, they've checked their Host machine and they see nothing wrong with it. According to them, everything is normal at the Host machine. So we are short of ideas on what to do and that's why I'm here to take some expert opinions, the following things are for sure :
-> My Game Server files are exactly as I run on other machines without Lag and even on the current machine 1 month ago without Lag. -> The VPS itself is not causing the Lag. -> I've checked Network and no packets are loss, not sure about any difference between ICMP or UDP packets since the game is UDP. The most probable thing is the Host machine itself. This usually happens when the Game Server falls out of resources and gets stuck.
How can I run LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) in a virtual machine (Ubuntu in virtual box) and make it so the web server is accessible locally (and ONLY locally) on the host OS via an ip address?
