Ubuntu :: Can't Install Restricted Formats In Meerkat?
Nov 12, 2010
I tried to install them through the software center first. It would show "in progress" on the left hand side for a couple seconds and then it would go away, but the formats did not install. next I found a command to copy and paste, but it didn't work either
Quote:
mike@mike-MacBook:~$ $ wget -c http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...untu3_i386.deb

edit: it appears that this problem applies to more than just the restricted formats... I just tried to download chess and it didn't work either. the window flickered for a second after the "in progress" went away, then nothing happened.

I am new to ubuntu and would like to play my music library via a program. Was going to just try rhythmbox since it came with the OS, unless someone has another suggestion. When trying to play my mp3s I get a error saying I need to download a plugin which it can't find. I found this link and tried to follow it. [URL]..I was able to install the package on my laptop, but one my desk top when I click on 'Click here to install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package' I get prompted to use 'apturl' which I accept then it says Could not find package 'ubuntu-restricted-extras'.I am connected to my network, shouldn't it just reach out to and grab this?

I can play WMAs with MPlayer but when I try to skip forward a few minutes it plays for a split second, and then plays at another random part of the video making it impossible to play a WMA from anywhere but the beginning.
Code:
mplayer -demuxer lavf ccent01.wmv.The above command opens the video but there is no menubar, scroll bar, or any reaction to right click although strangely scrolling my mouse wheel seems to randomly skip through the video. In VLC when trying to play the same file I get the error:
Code:
No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "wmas". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this. No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "MSS2". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this. After converting the .wma file to .mpg, and also .avi using a command similar to:
Code: mencoder ccent01.wmv -ofps 23.976 -ovc lavc -oac copy -o ccent01.mpg. There is no change playing the file with mplayer and in VLC it now only gives one error: Code: No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "wmas". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this. I'm preparing for a Cisco exam later in the week and would like to spend tomorrow watching hours of computer based training videos but would rather not have to do it in Windows. Already tried using Media Player Classic in WINE but it crashed. Is there a workaround? Oh and I already have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed.

How to install software? I'm looking to install Google Music Manager since they finally released the Linux client a few days ago, but it seems that it only comes in .deb and .rpm
As far as I can tell, Slackware doesn't use either of these formats, so does that mean it's impossible for me to install this program? I suppose I've been spoiled by just having to double click. exe files in Windows, but I'm up for learning and so far really like what Linux has to offer.
Also, could anyone explain why there are so many different formats for installing programs in Linux? It just seems like a pain to developers to have to package things in so many ways, especially when there are so many different Linux distributions.

I just reseantly got an Asus Essentio CM1730-05 desktop and I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on it with Wubi. After doing so, I installed the restricted driver for my onboard ATI Radeon 3000 graphics. After doing so I get to a blank screen right after the splash screen. Also I think it is frozen because I don't here the Log in music and I have to hard reboot instead of just hitting the power button. If you need to know more about my hardware just ask. Also I have tried two different monitors.
A Dell M991 and my HDTV. I have used the following hook ups to the HDTV-DVI to HDMI and HDMI to HDMI. The Dell M991 is like any older monitor. Just that one VGA hook up. I noticed there is an Asus section so I hope that this is still the right spot. I have tried the following. Replace quiet splash with nomodeset and also i915.modeset=1. I have yet to try i915.modeset=0.

I made a quick little USB install of Ubuntu using the USB Creator thing in Ubuntu 9.10 (I gave it room to store data also). I use this USB on two computers (Both Toshiba Laptops) and one of them needs restricted drivers for 3D. If I install them, will it mess up where it won't work on any other computers?

I just started using Linux, more specifically the Ubuntu distribution, earlier today. I am attempting, and failing, at setting up my wireless with a usb device. My device is on the list of those supported, and I am trying to install ndiswrapper so that I can use the windows drivers. My problem is, my access is restricted. I can not save to anywhere on my File System. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

I have just finished installing Karmic on new computer. I have already installed java jre, flash plugin, and unrar/rar. My question is can I still install restricted extras to get addition applications installed, without corrupting my apps already installed? Or should I just manually install the remaining items from restricted extras manually?

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 today and all was working well. I tried playing a video and was prompted to install plugins which worked fine. I then installed Open Shot, Lame and Restricted extras and now when I try to open a video (WMV, AVI, FLV etc) all I get is a prompt to search for suitable Plugin. When I click on search another prompt tells me No packages with the requested plugins were found followed by the name of the requested plugin.ie DivX MPEG-4 Version 5 decoder or Windows Media Video 9 decoder etc.Anybody any ideas how to sort this. I already reinstalled 11.04 from scratch as I had the same problem yesterday. I never had an issue like this before and been using Ubuntu for years.

I am using Maverick 10.10 on a Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 which has this card, full output from lshw:
[code]...
So far, I've figured out that 'Error 2' basically means any of probably a zillion or two possible errors. The line I have in bold is obviously the one. I have searched, dug, probed, but can not work out what it means or where to start fixing it. Reason I'm bothering at all is that yes, the Realtek card worked 'out of the box' but is pretty unreliable, a third and less the speed of the other machines in the house

I recently installed Fedora - it seems like a nice interface and I want to experience the system before deciding whether I want to keep using it over my ever reliable Crunchbang, which gives me absolutely no grief whatsoever. However, it is nice to use an attractive interface now and again. So, here's my problem - I opted to install the ATI drivers when alerted to the restricted ones by the pop-up. I took note of how to disable them again if there were problems with the display after reboot. There was a problem with the display (black screen) and I can't get the command entered at boot time because the only command line environment I have an option for is GRUB. Grib does not recognize any of the 'aticonfig --initial -f' command that ATI instructed me to use to get things back to normal. How do I do this? I prsume others have been there and will know how to guide me. - getting the graphical interface to display better graphics. I want the eye candy that desktop effects give. I am hoping Fedora won't let me down here because I could simply continue to use Ubuntu which only gives one problem with the window resize delay.

I've had an annoying couple of days beginning with a win7 reinstall on a dual boot system (win7/10.10) that wiped out grub. I reinstalled ubuntu (10.04) in the hopes of just getting grub2 back up, but that failed and I ended up with a new install of 10.04 on the partition and a happily functioning and coexisting win7/ubuntu wit grub working the way that I wanted.
However, I'm traveling, and tried to reinstall the wifi drivers manually. I think I messed something up and installed the 10.10 drivers onto the 10.04 system (I only had a 10.04 disk and the pendrive usb method failed). Anyway, when I tried to (re)install the drivers from the cd, I got the error: a later driver has already been installed. However, the problem at hand is as follows: now my win7 install doesn't see any of the wireless networks around. So, I think I somehow fraked the wifi card.

When I installed Arch Linux on my Toshiba L10 Intel Centrino laptop, it detected my video card and monitors correctly "out-of-the box". Now that I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat", it has not.
How can I configure Ubuntu to use the correct Intel drivers with my Intel 82852/855GM graphics card?

I was using THIS guide to install restricted multimedia codecs. I got to the part where I had to switch system packages to the Packman packages. It came up with a number of dependency errors. I then had a stupid moment and told it to ignore the dependencies and break the applications. Now Xine won't even start, and Amarok seems to have disappeared on my computer. Oh and I also got a bunch of weird dependency problems when I was trying to install some of the packages from Packman too as listed on the guide. I also told it to ignore them when it couldn't find the dependencies. I'm scared I fudged multimedia up so badly I would have to do a clean install to get it back. BTW, I'm running openSUSE 11.2. I don't know if there are other specifications that matter.

I just installed the latest version of OpenOffice (version 3.0.1) from Synaptic on Jaunty. OpenOffice can read MS Office 2007 files but cannot save in their format (docx or xlsx). So if I edit a docx document I cannot save it in the same format.
Why can I not save in the MS Office 2007 format? How can I fix this?

The music I ripped with Sound Juicer, or ripped with VLC and tagged with EasyTag both have the same tag issues. The tags work great system-wide in Ubuntu, and if I drop the song on a data CD and put it in my Pioneer stereo, the tags work there, too. I can put the song on my Walkman and then copy it to another Ubuntu machine, and the tags work on the second machine, as well.
However, the Walkman lists the song as Unknown Song, Unknown Artist, Unknown Album. Further, if I transport the file into Windows, the Windows system doesn't recognize the tags, either. This begs the question, are there multiple tag formats?

I have been following this guide to ensuring that your Linux converts stay with you to create a noob-proof Ubuntu ISO image with remastersys. I want to know how to set the default file formats in OpenOffice to Microsoft formats to ensure that the newbies who use this ISO image don't create documents that their friends can't open.

I have a Firefox addon called Download Helper that lets me download many of the videos I see on the internet. Sometimes, I run into something I can't. I'd like to know exactly how to download these files: [URL]. It seems they are encoded with their own player, but mousing over them also brings up Adobe Flash Player 10.0. Download helper normally gets this stuff. Is there a Firefox extension or a program that would let me capture these videos? Or, for that matter, one that could succinctly tell me upon mousing over a video exactly what kind of file it is?

Since using Ubuntu, I have always been amazed that I can plug a drive formatted on a Mac or PC, into a Ubuntu machine and it will see the files on the drive. Why is it that Ubuntu can do this and Windows can't unless you install special software so that you can read Mac or Ubuntu formatted drives on a PC. I really like this ability of Ubuntu a lot!!

Here's a question for audio compression nerds. I currently store music ripped form CD's in FLAC format on my HD. I would like to store them as OGG files to save space.
My quandry is this; I need to create both MP3 and OGG files. Both formats are "lossy". I imagine that each format must have different ways of deciding what to lose. Therefore, I am losing some stuff when I rip it in the first place, and converting would lose additional (and dfferent) stuff.
To give you an idea about what sounds okay to me, I believe I can tell the difference between 128 Kbps and 192, but not 192 and 256.
Am I being like the guy who waxes his headlisghts to increase gas mileage here?

I'm thinking about sticking my DVDs and audio CDs onto my computer. I will need to convert/transcode them into smaller file formats but I'm confused about all the available containers/codecs/formats etc. What types are "free"? Just Ogg or are there others? I'd prefer to use something that isn't proprietary. What are your recommendations for audio and video files?
