i want to install kubuntu-restricted-extras but i prefer sun-java6 packages over openjdk... how can i exclude openjdk from installing when i install kubuntu-restricted-extras.

My question is can I still install restricted extras to get addition applications installed, without corrupting my apps already installed? Or should I just manually install the remaining items from restricted extras manually?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 today and all was working well. I tried playing a video and was prompted to install plugins which worked fine. I then installed Open Shot, Lame and Restricted extras and now when I try to open a video (WMV, AVI, FLV etc) all I get is a prompt to search for suitable Plugin. When I click on search another prompt tells me No packages with the requested plugins were found followed by the name of the requested plugin.ie DivX MPEG-4 Version 5 decoder or Windows Media Video 9 decoder etc.Anybody any ideas how to sort this. I already reinstalled 11.04 from scratch as I had the same problem yesterday. I never had an issue like this before and been using Ubuntu for years.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI hope that I am not repeating a thread.I can connect successfully to HotSpots in the sense that I can see the network and connect to it. However, I cannot browse. After I open FireFox I am supposed to be brought automatically to the login page, but instead it keeps saying "connecting to..." until it fails with an error message. After researching a bit further, I have found out that this happens when the package ubuntu-restricted-extras has been installed. All works perfectly before installing this package. This has been going on for quite a few releases now, I think since 9.04 at least. I have come up with this problem on three completely different computers, so I would say that the hardware is not the problem. This issue also happens with Epiphany and Konqueror, so I presume that it's not a problem with the browser neither.Rather, it looks to me like one of the many packages that are installed with ubuntu-restricted-extras causes the problem.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI managed to install xubuntu-restriced-extras on my Ubuntu 10.04 server (which btw is headless and no X installed at all) Anyways, i tried to remove it with apt-get remove, but in only deleted a couple of Kb. tried with --purge, autoremove, autoclean, clean and everything else i could think of, but my poor server is still bloated with stuff like adobe-plugins and stuff i dont need.
How can i propely remove the entire package? I could also remove the package piece by piece (since its just a dummy package, no?), but I tried to search the internet for such information, but to no avail. Where to look, what to do?(btw, this happended because i was installing the package on my xubuntu laptop, but forgot i was SSH'ing to my server
i am currently running 9.10 and was thinking of upgrading to 10.10. i was going to initally install 10.10 but i saw that it ran fluendo. does that mean the ubuntu restricted extras aren't in the future versions? i was also wondering if i would have to reinstall all my old programs.

I have 2 Ubuntu CDs, the alternate x64 and the desktop x86. I've inserted both and still gave me the same error. The computer is running the alternate x64 version. I've already reinstalled this computer 4 times, and it NEVER asked me for the CD. Why would it ask for it now? Not only that it asks for a CD I don't have.

View 3 Replies View RelatedOpenJDK has recently updated. Problem is that I am using the JDK from Sun/Oracle which I downloaded and installed along with other java tools and IDE's. I notice that openJDK is now the default JDK on the system.

Now my own java build is configured in $PATH but ignored, this is not good as I do a lot of java development. I would like to disable the OpenJDK or even remove it. I would also like to disable the update manager for this particular package and it's other add ons.
how do I uninstall Java? Tried with Synaptic and apt-get remove, but uninstalling sun-java6 automatically adds default-jre (openjdk) and uninstalling openJdk automatically installs sun-java ... but I don't want ANY Java on my machine - am I missing something? Already thought I maybe have a package that requires SOME kind of Java, but how do I find out?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just downloaded and installed the latest version that I know of, Centos 5.4. I initially selected all of the packages and the installations crashed. Since I am installing it on a private network I couldn't save the info. I tried deselecting the packages until finially figuring out the 'extras' was the problem. I deselected that and the installation went fine. What's on the extra's? Part of the error message was something to do with a Python. I have been trying to use Cobbler, is that part of the 'Extras'.

I did: ./grub.SlackBuild as su.
The install went on for a long time and I saw warnings etc flash by.
I don't know if it has installed properly. I tried it before and it destroyed my grub menu. I managed to recover grub through LMDE and now, I am back for more!
Is there any way to tell if this app is installed properly before I run grubconfig?
i am trying to install the extras of anjuta which are v.2.3.2 but the current version supported from synaptic packet manager is only 2.3.0.. what can i do ? edit: it appears that this problem applies to more than just the restricted formats... I just tried to download chess and it didn't work either. the window flickered for a second after the "in progress" went away, then nothing happened.
I just reseantly got an Asus Essentio CM1730-05 desktop and I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on it with Wubi. After doing so, I installed the restricted driver for my onboard ATI Radeon 3000 graphics. After doing so I get to a blank screen right after the splash screen. Also I think it is frozen because I don't here the Log in music and I have to hard reboot instead of just hitting the power button. If you need to know more about my hardware just ask. Also I have tried two different monitors.
A Dell M991 and my HDTV. I have used the following hook ups to the HDTV-DVI to HDMI and HDMI to HDMI. The Dell M991 is like any older monitor. Just that one VGA hook up. I noticed there is an Asus section so I hope that this is still the right spot. I have tried the following. Replace quiet splash with nomodeset and also i915.modeset=1. I have yet to try i915.modeset=0.
I made a quick little USB install of Ubuntu using the USB Creator thing in Ubuntu 9.10 (I gave it room to store data also). I use this USB on two computers (Both Toshiba Laptops) and one of them needs restricted drivers for 3D. If I install them, will it mess up where it won't work on any other computers?

I recently installed Fedora - it seems like a nice interface and I want to experience the system before deciding whether I want to keep using it over my ever reliable Crunchbang, which gives me absolutely no grief whatsoever. However, it is nice to use an attractive interface now and again.So, here's my problem - I opted to install the ATI drivers when alerted to the restricted ones by the pop-up. I took note of how to disable them again if there were problems with the display after reboot. There was a problem with the display (black screen) and I can't get the command entered at boot time because the only command line environment I have an option for is GRUB. Grib does not recognize any of the 'aticonfig --initial -f' command that ATI instructed me to use to get things back to normal. How do I do this? I prsume others have been there and will know how to guide me. - getting the graphical interface to display better graphics. I want the eye candy that desktop effects give. I am hoping Fedora won't let me down here because I could simply continue to use Ubuntu which only gives one problem with the window resize delay.
