I just installed the latest version of OpenOffice (version 3.0.1) from Synaptic on Jaunty. OpenOffice can read MS Office 2007 files but cannot save in their format (docx or xlsx). So if I edit a docx document I cannot save it in the same format.
Why can I not save in the MS Office 2007 format? How can I fix this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 10.04LTS. I upgraded from 8.04 (which may be relevant to my problems) a while back. OpenOffice was working with no Help visible. When I checked synaptic openoffice appeared as a manual install (probably because I installed version 3.0 manually on 8.04). So I started by uninstalling it using 'remove completely' and re-installing. I also deleted .openoffice.org (which was still left there in spite of the 'complete removal'). I installed openoffice.org-help-en-gb and the common files. Here is the full list:

I just realized my Thesaurus function is inactive. Ctrl F7 does nothing, and on the pull down menu Tools>Language the Thesaurus option is greyed out.
I went to Tools>Options>Writing Aids and under the Language Modules, Thesaurus is listed but no dictionary box to click. No sub module listed under Thesaurus.
There a spell check dictionary listed and marked -- Hunspell Checker.
When I go to the OOo extension page I see no Thesaurus files to download?
How can I get the Thesaurus working as without it Writer is going to be pretty useless. I am using the GB dictionary.
I tried upgrading to OOo 3.1 but that hasn't helped either.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have this odd issue. I am new to Fedora; however, I have been able to download the newest version of OpenOffice, and install from RPM into /opt. The install goes great, and once completed I am able to use OpenOffice from all of my user accounts; however, after a few boots, or reboots of normal operation. OpenOffice stops working, and no longer launches. I am not sure why this is happening, nor do I know where to check to see what is takin place, or whether if the application is launching or etc.

I tried opening an existing sxc document and got this error message:[Java framework]sunjavaplugin.so could not load Java runtime library: file:///usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so.
It looks like that openoffice is still looking into the old openjdk instead of the new sun java. How can I repoint it to use the current java (assuming it really needs it) ? Apparently even entering openoffice on a new document gives error in a popupOpenOffice org requires a JRE to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version or install a new JRE and select it under Tools-Options-OpenOffice org-Java ... but since openoffice does not start I cannot access those options I guess (or is such stuff located elsewhere, and if so where) ?

Gimp works fine editing and saving photos from/to the nfs share. kWrite can do its thing and read/create files on the NAS. Files I create with vim are visible and editable under windows. OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.
The music I ripped with Sound Juicer, or ripped with VLC and tagged with EasyTag both have the same tag issues. The tags work great system-wide in Ubuntu, and if I drop the song on a data CD and put it in my Pioneer stereo, the tags work there, too. I can put the song on my Walkman and then copy it to another Ubuntu machine, and the tags work on the second machine, as well.
However, the Walkman lists the song as Unknown Song, Unknown Artist, Unknown Album. Further, if I transport the file into Windows, the Windows system doesn't recognize the tags, either.This begs the question, are there multiple tag formats?
I have installed Lucid on my HP tx2000 64bit laptop and trying to get the Adobe flash plugin. I have the beta version of the 64-bit plugin from the Adobe website, but it has a .so file that I cannot realise how to install.

I'd like to know exactly how to download these files: [URL]. It seems they are encoded with their own player, but mousing over them also brings up Adobe Flash Player 10.0. Download helper normally gets this stuff. Is there a Firefox extension or a program that would let me capture these videos? Or, for that matter, one that could succinctly tell me upon mousing over a video exactly what kind of file it is?

Why is it that Ubuntu can do this and Windows can't unless you install special software so that you can read Mac or Ubuntu formatted drives on a PC. I really like this ability of Ubuntu a lot!!

My quandry is this; I need to create both MP3 and OGG files. Both formats are "lossy". I imagine that each format must have different ways of deciding what to lose. Therefore, I am losing some stuff when I rip it in the first place, and converting would lose additional (and dfferent) stuff.
To give you an idea about what sounds okay to me, I believe I can tell the difference between 128 Kbps and 192, but not 192 and 256.
Am I being like the guy who waxes his headlisghts to increase gas mileage here?
I tried to install them through the software center first. It would show "in progress" on the left hand side for a couple seconds and then it would go away, but the formats did not install. next I found a command to copy and paste, but it didn't work either

edit: it appears that this problem applies to more than just the restricted formats... I just tried to download chess and it didn't work either. the window flickered for a second after the "in progress" went away, then nothing happened.
Is it documented anywhere exactly what multi-media formats I can expect Ubuntu to support out of the box?It would also be nice for me to know exactly what package is responsible for providing the support for each supported format.

It's a pain to use Rhythmbox to edit the artist, album, year, Genre and other info of each song because you have to find the song by it name and then change the info. There is no way to put it in a view as folder or drive name or partition so you can simply go to where the files them selves are on the drive and edit mutiple files at the same time without having to search for each song individuly.
In XP all you need to do is right click and select properties and then edit the info there but in Linux all you can do is view the info under properties.
Is it legal to use restricted software/formats/plugins?
