View 2 RepliesI just installed the latest version of OpenOffice (version 3.0.1) from Synaptic on Jaunty. OpenOffice can read MS Office 2007 files but cannot save in their format (docx or xlsx). So if I edit a docx document I cannot save it in the same format.
Why can I not save in the MS Office 2007 format? How can I fix this?
I just downloaded Foxit and I want to set it as my default PDF reader. However, when I right click, choose Open With-->Other Applications and select Foxit, it just opens the PDF. The next time I open a PDF, it opens in evince again. I also tried System-->Preferences-->Preferred Applications, but there is no PDF option. What else can I try?

i installed ubuntu 10.04 via usb on a WD external HD ,i started my computer today and some icons had changed ,i installed a windows 7 theme pack a week ago and today as you can see from the screen shots in the upper left the icons to computer,recycle bin and a folder and fire fox buttons have changed to default and the line of folders you see(cairo dock) at the bottom mid screen but you can see in the gnome panel top right that it still has the win7 theme to it as the media player,notes and wireless icons are ok and in the other shot you can see at the bottom left window all icons are default except one and the center start menu is cairo dock is fine but the gnome start menu has default icons yet maintained the windows style menu and the microsoft emblem.

Gimp works fine editing and saving photos from/to the nfs share. kWrite can do its thing and read/create files on the NAS. Files I create with vim are visible and editable under windows. OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.
The music I ripped with Sound Juicer, or ripped with VLC and tagged with EasyTag both have the same tag issues. The tags work great system-wide in Ubuntu, and if I drop the song on a data CD and put it in my Pioneer stereo, the tags work there, too. I can put the song on my Walkman and then copy it to another Ubuntu machine, and the tags work on the second machine, as well.
However, the Walkman lists the song as Unknown Song, Unknown Artist, Unknown Album. Further, if I transport the file into Windows, the Windows system doesn't recognize the tags, either.This begs the question, are there multiple tag formats?
I have installed Lucid on my HP tx2000 64bit laptop and trying to get the Adobe flash plugin. I have the beta version of the 64-bit plugin from the Adobe website, but it has a .so file that I cannot realise how to install.

I'd like to know exactly how to download these files: [URL]. It seems they are encoded with their own player, but mousing over them also brings up Adobe Flash Player 10.0. Download helper normally gets this stuff. Is there a Firefox extension or a program that would let me capture these videos? Or, for that matter, one that could succinctly tell me upon mousing over a video exactly what kind of file it is?

Why is it that Ubuntu can do this and Windows can't unless you install special software so that you can read Mac or Ubuntu formatted drives on a PC. I really like this ability of Ubuntu a lot!!

My quandry is this; I need to create both MP3 and OGG files. Both formats are "lossy". I imagine that each format must have different ways of deciding what to lose. Therefore, I am losing some stuff when I rip it in the first place, and converting would lose additional (and dfferent) stuff.
To give you an idea about what sounds okay to me, I believe I can tell the difference between 128 Kbps and 192, but not 192 and 256.
Am I being like the guy who waxes his headlisghts to increase gas mileage here?
I tried to install them through the software center first. It would show "in progress" on the left hand side for a couple seconds and then it would go away, but the formats did not install. next I found a command to copy and paste, but it didn't work either

edit: it appears that this problem applies to more than just the restricted formats... I just tried to download chess and it didn't work either. the window flickered for a second after the "in progress" went away, then nothing happened.
Is it documented anywhere exactly what multi-media formats I can expect Ubuntu to support out of the box?It would also be nice for me to know exactly what package is responsible for providing the support for each supported format.

It's a pain to use Rhythmbox to edit the artist, album, year, Genre and other info of each song because you have to find the song by it name and then change the info. There is no way to put it in a view as folder or drive name or partition so you can simply go to where the files them selves are on the drive and edit mutiple files at the same time without having to search for each song individuly.
In XP all you need to do is right click and select properties and then edit the info there but in Linux all you can do is view the info under properties.
Is it legal to use restricted software/formats/plugins? I have question(s) about file formats and line endings and would like to know how you manage this. Here is the thing: I am sharing files with a Windows user and we run into some problems of formatting: He send me files in UTF-8 and with the Windows line ending and when I open them, modify them and send them back, he got them with the unix file ending and in UTF-8 or sometimes ANSII. I know that for example in gedit (as most of the files are .htm files that I modify and send them back to him or upload directly on the net after modification) when you use "saving as" you can change the line ending and also UTF-8 or else, But the thing is that it is pretty time consuming to do a "save as" with an existing file and change the attributes when you have to deal with dozens of files. So I searched on the web and heard about tofrodos, which I installed and worked well besides that it only changes the line ending. So I was wondering: how you deal with those formats/line ending compatibility issue and how you avoid loosing time because of this but still manage to get your fellow windows users shraing files with youif you know command line tools that would enable me to modify the line ending and the formats of file(s) (also pretty basic but I didnīt find a way to check/display those attributes from the command line)tell me more about the web, as it should be the same problem (and even worst as the are a lost of unix devices acting as servers) but still windows users donīt have any problem displaying pages with are documents stored with their own line endings and formatting.

The one provided in Fedora-suggested repositories (audacity.i386 0:1.3.7-0.4.beta.fc9.2) is useless - has none of the above. One can't import MP3, WAV, OGG,... - nothing. The only option is to record and export to MP3 (with Lame).
To be honest, I can't understand why people are supplying such builds.
I understand it's quicker to build it from soruces in my case, but if anyone cares to replace the mentioned version with actually useful one, it could be a good deed.
