I am unable to return my screen resolution back to the 1024x setting. Somehow I got it stuck on the 340? setting, which is not allowing me to see/access the dialog box save button when I go to preferences, display. Anyone know a way out of this mess?

The upgrade to 11.4 was ruined for some reason (only got commandprompt login) and the message that Xorg.0.log couldn't be copied. Decided to install 11.4 from scratch, but since the install my screen flashes every 20 seconds or so to black screen and and after 1 second back to normal. There is no interruption of any other task like typing. Card: FeForce FX5200 card. Can someone please point me to a solution? Also, my monitor (Philips 150S) is not recognized. How can I change that without changing xorg.conf by hand?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 14 and set the screensaver (in System>Preferences on the Gnome GUI) to activate after the computer is idle for 30 minutes. After the screensaver is activated, and a press a key or the mouse, the screen is back to normal -- no problem.After the screensaver has been activated once, however, it comes back on very quickly -- usually in 2 or 3 minutes if the computer is idle. The only way I have found to correct this (and set activation back at 30 minutes again) is to log out and back in again.How can I correct this, and automatically set screensaver activation back at 30 minutes each time the normal screen is reactivated?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was evaluating a live distro on a USB drive and the resolution got changed from my normal 1680X1050 to 1024X768. I normally run SuperOS (ubuntu derivative) at 1680X1050 on my 22" LCD flatscreen monitor. The users manual for the monitor says that the optimum resolution is 1680X1050. Now when I go to system, preferences, monitors the monitor is unknown and the highest resolution that is available is 1360X768. I have clicked on Detect Monitors but not sure anything is happening. I have went to system, administration, additional drivers but none show up. The OSD menu for the monitor is showing 1380X768. I haven't been able to make any changes to the setting. I push the button that is supposed to get me into the sub-menu but nothing happens.

I have found the plethora of sites giving instructions on how to reset my password, such as psychocats.net
So have gotten into the root shell and this is what I type.
ls /home
(gives me the name of my account)
passwd (my account here)
unknown user (account name here)
I have also tried doing the editing the boot kernel.
I add this: rw init=/bin/bash
Once I restart I get the root@(none) command prompt. Then I type passwd (username here) and get back ' unknown user
How do I get my firefox back to normal? It used to have the orange x and the minimize stuff on the left. Now it has the x black and on the right. I cant figure out how to get it back to normal.

i'm just installed VirtualBox following this guide:[URL]...then i created a WinXP VM. installed GuestAdditions and everything seems to be fine, display was fine 32bit 800x600. Anyhow after rebooting, the VM only display 8bit and 640x480 for XP... this is really weird. anyone come across this before? i can't seem to figure out a fix to get my display back to normal

So the splash occurs I put user name and password but the system try to enter and later it comes back. I try from CLI, I make startx from command line, the same situation. Sometime the system informs me about a error (a temporary file from /tmp(.X0~ )I must remove, I did but next time it tells me that it can't load one module (it gives me a number).
View 9 Replies View Relatedi am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire 5810T which came with Windows Vista. I prefer Ubuntu but I need some windows applications so I dual-booted Vista and 9.10.
There was a few minor problems with the Vista side but I didn't use it enough to care. A few weeks ago Vista would not open some programs and others would shut down automaticly and some would open but not connect to the internet like they should. This happened on my previous laptop and when I used the system recovery discs to restore the computer all those issues were gone.
I used the recover discs to restore everything to its original factory settings, it said everything was successful so I restarted. My computer got to the grub menu but when I chose Windows Vista as my operating system it goes black for half a second then returns to the grub menu.
I can get into Ubuntu fine, and I can see the Vista files when I mount the drive to Ubuntu. When I look at the files everything is the way it should be if I had restored it but I can't boot it..
when I boot my pc with fedora 10, it displays the white cube, although i can rotate it but it does not seem to work i cant see any desktops. How can I switch back to the normal desktop view or disable compiz fusion ?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

The problem is that at seemingly random times the roles of the caps lock and control keys (and the other customisations) gets reverted back to normal - which makes for an awful lot of confusion! Running xmodmap again switches them to how I like it, but again after a seemingly random period it resets itself. This occurs under KDE and Gnome in F13, but did not occur in F12. Using the KDE keyboard settings dialog to switch caps lock and control does the exhibits the same behaviour.
Suddenly Ubuntu goes into low-graphics mode the last couple of days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution [URL].

I thought it was my hard drive...replaced it, reinstalled 9.10 and same issue. Thought it might be the memory...nope!, thought it might be my motherboard, tried to update my bios and it froze and now I can't get in to my bios at all. I bought a new motherboard and did a fresh install of 9.10 and same problem!!! I took my hard drive out and put it in another computer and it ran the same ruling out hardware issues all together.

When I enter my username/password at login with the GUI (I disabled the list of users some time ago) the screen will flicker then return me to the login screen. There is no notification of an error. It doesn't matter if I try the recovery console or safe mode there is the same issue when I try and login with this user. However, I can login with a different user open a console and su to that user that wouldn't login at the GUI.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAccording to the display properties in GNOME, its showing as 1366x768, which is what I normally use. Problem is, in fedora, all the text and buttons and everything is huge! Heres a screenshot attached showing what I mean. The resolution is fine (i'm using a samsung 40" and native is 1366x768, but in the display properties its called a samsung 72".
I reduced the text size in appearance preferences to 6 instead of 10 and took the screenshot. If I had left it at 10 everything else would have been huge. how I can fix this? Fedora 11 installation went flawless on my hardware this time, and previous versions never finished installing, so I kept using windows.
Before I upgrade to 10.4 It would be nice to find the best solution to this problem. I use a KVM switch that dont pass the EDID info from the screen to the OS. To solve this, that is, to get the correct screen resolution, i need to pass monitor and screen info to the OS at every startup. One way is to ad a script to /etc/gdm/init/default, or in KDE /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

My screen capture software, shutter and system's default "take screenshot", do not function normal any more. It can only capture the desktop wallpaper, not any other elements on the desktop, nor any other opened windows. It's just like taking an x-ray picture by passing all the other objects/elements/running programs on top of the desktop wallpaper. Any ideas? I am using Fedora 14 64 bit. The screen capture software were working fine, though.
