Ubuntu :: Random "freezes" Or Pauses For Like 20 Seconds, Then Back To Normal?

Feb 11, 2010

I am stumped. I get random "freezes" for like 20 seconds, then back to normal. Then again the same thing randomly. I thought it was my hard drive...replaced it, reinstalled 9.10 and same issue. Thought it might be the memory...nope!, thought it might be my motherboard, tried to update my bios and it froze and now I can't get in to my bios at all. I bought a new motherboard and did a fresh install of 9.10 and same problem!!! I took my hard drive out and put it in another computer and it ran the same ruling out hardware issues all together.

Fedora :: Random Times Roles Of Caps Lock And Control Keys Gets Reverted Back To Normal

Oct 18, 2010

I have a problem with keyboard mappings on F13. I have the following in my .xmodmap file that is run from .bash_profile:

[code]...

The problem is that at seemingly random times the roles of the caps lock and control keys (and the other customisations) gets reverted back to normal - which makes for an awful lot of confusion! Running xmodmap again switches them to how I like it, but again after a seemingly random period it resets itself. This occurs under KDE and Gnome in F13, but did not occur in F12. Using the KDE keyboard settings dialog to switch caps lock and control does the exhibits the same behaviour.

I'm having a buggy problem with rythmbox under F14. Sometimes when I start playing a audio cd or mp3 file Rythmbox will play about 2 seconds of the file then pause playback. When this happens it wont let me restart playback. I have to shutdown Rythmbox and restart it and try again.

I have all the latest updates, running on a Dell Latitude D510 laptop.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Freezes 10 Seconds After Login In Kde

Jun 27, 2010

I decided to install ubuntu again and downloaded 10.04. I had some issues installing with the desktop version, but everything installed fine with the alternate version. Now if I want to log in (on the KDE login-screen) the KDE-loading-symbols show up just as they are supposed to do, the desktop shows up (I can see "Desktop Folder and uBlog) and suddenly the mouse/system freezes. Neither Ctrl-Alt-Del isn't working nor Ctrl-Alt-F2 gives any response, all I can do is to reset my computer.

When I use Gnome as a desktop enviroment the computer totally freezes at the login-screen, without giving me any chance of logging in. Things I already tried: noapic, nomodeset, noacpi settings when booting, I successfully installed the latest ATI-Driver for my 3870, I disabled compiz. The kdm log says that there's some problem with an i-bus-daemon. Disabling/restarting the daemon has no effect on the behavior of my installation.

Ubuntu :: Computer Freezes About 10 Seconds After Log-in / Fix It?

I recently installed Ubuntu on my spare comp.

It freezes after about 10 seconds after logging in. I don't know why this happens.

It's a Dell Dimensions 4100. Installation went fine. I did everything, didn't skip any checks. It finished normally.

And now my hopes of another working computer have gone down the drains.

Ubuntu :: Random Freezes In 10.10?

Jan 15, 2011

I've been using Ubuntu for a while now, and ever since I installed 10.10 (I did a clean install) I've been having problems with the computer completely locking up... nothing is responsive. I've not had this problem on any prior Ubuntu version. The problem started after I installed the updates for ubuntu... I have a hunch that its either the nvidia driver i installed or the latest kernel thats causing the problem. I'm using the proprietary driver for nvidia and my card is a GeForce6100 nForce 405... the kernel 2.6.35-22... as you can imagine its quite annoying having the computer lock up.. P.S.- the freezes aren't exactly random, they happen generally when I'm using high CPU %'s (e.g. when i import all my music at once to rhythmbox and playing spring rts)

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 'freezes' Every 10 Seconds Or So

Mar 15, 2011

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 - fresh install (no upgrade). However with 11.4 there is a very annoying bug (actually, two of them, but I'll post the other one to a different thread): every few seconds (10 or 15) the system 'freezes' for a split second. anything that is going on (visible) freezes for half a second or so. If you're in the process of moving the mouse, the pointer will stop dead in its tracks for that half second, and then when it resumes (a half-second later) it picks up from where "it would have been" had there not been a freeze (it will jump from one position on the screen to the next, as per the actual movement of the mouse. If I have a window (a terminal window for example) that is scrolling output, the scrolling will stop for the same half-second. I did a quick monitor with 'top' refreshing every tenth of a second, and when this freezing occurs is *seems* to coincide with spikes in the kernel thread 'kworker'. I have a hunch that this *may* be due to new built-in NVIDIA drivers that are in 11.4 that I wasn't using in 11.2 (where I compiled the driver from scratch) as I have seen a few posts about issues with this and the 'nouveau' driver - this is just a hunch. Not that dmesg also reports this log quite frequently:

[code]...

This is a FAST system (3 GHz and four cores) that is otherwise running IDLE, other than logging into KDE. So it's not a case of high CPU usage or I/O usage. The video card is: VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220] (rev a2). I have installed a basic KDE 64-bit distribution, using NO proprietary repositories - it's essentially and "out-of-the-box" install.

Ubuntu :: Skype Incoming Video Freezes After 30-60 Seconds?

Jan 6, 2010

My problem is this: the video that I receive during a video call will freeze after about 30 to 60 seconds. Before that, it works fine. And the outgoing video (that which I send to the contact on the other end of the call) is fine throughout.

If my contact resets their video by turning it off and then on again during the call, it will usually work again for a few seconds. Then, as always, it freezes.

So, I am clearly receiving the signal. But maybe I am overloading something? Is this a graphics card problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: Freezes Up 30 Seconds Or So After A Successful Login?

Feb 17, 2010

Problem: Ubuntu freezes up 30 seconds or so after a successful login.

Background:I am running a Compaq Presario SR5030NX. It has had issues for a while with running Ubuntu properly. My computer suffers from this bug. I have managed to get the LiveCD running by adding the following to my boot parameters:

Code:
vga=792 i915.modeset=0
When I was running the LiveCD I found that it would freeze after about 30 seconds. I solved this problem by again changing the boot options. This time I:Press F6
Check noapic, nolapic, and pci=noacpi

I then proceeded to install Ubuntu.

My problem arose when Ubuntu did not modify grub.cfg to match the setting I needed in order to boot. I managed to modify in some of the settings correctly, I believe at least, but not all of them.

In its current state Ubuntu is able to boot, but freezes 30 seconds or so after a successful login. If I do not graphically login, I do still have access to VTY1-6. The machine does not freeze until a successful graphical login has been made.

Below is the relevant section of my grub.cfg:

Code:
menuentry "Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14-generic" {
recordfail=1
if [ -n ${have_grubenv} ]; then save_env recordfail; fi
set quiet=1
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,2)
code....

On another note:
The liveCD I have been running for 6 months is BackTrack 3 Final. Which does not have this issue at all. I would wager a guess that BackTrack 4 does though as it is based off Ubuntu instead of Slax.

Ubuntu :: Debug Random Freezes In Gnome?

Apr 10, 2010

At random times (approx. once a day), my whole ubuntu/gnome interface freezes. mouseover-animiations (for example on the icons in the taskbar) keep working, but clicking doesn't do anything anymore. On the keyboard, tab and arrows keeps working, but most other keys don't do anything. The only option seems to be to reboot. After that reboot everything is fine again (for a while)

Once the freeze happens, it freezes both the standard ubuntu panels but also the program I have open at that moment. It doesn't seem to be connected to a specific program I run.

Is there some log, or anything else that I can use to figure out where these freezes are coming from?

Ubuntu :: RTorrent - Random Crashes And Freezes

Apr 22, 2010

I've been using rTorrent for a good two years now, and it's been running smoothly until about 6 months ago when random crashes and freezes would occur, between once per day and once per week. (I think it freezes if I run in screen, and crashes if I run it directly.) I've updated both rtorrent and libtorrent, updated cURL, and searched the internet near and far for a solution. I finally got this output (pastebin) after a crash today. I'm not sure how far up it goes, mainly because I'm not sure how I can scroll up the terminal window, and syslog doesn't seem to be of any help. Bottom line, I have no idea what rtorrent/libtorrent are doing, and random crashes are becoming very frustrating. For what it's worth I have a very large library (2000+) of shared files. Using version 9.04

Ubuntu :: Computer Freezes When Opening Any Random App?

Jul 4, 2010

I installed Ubuntu Lucid on my computer a few weeks ago (fresh install, formatted). But recently I've been having some problems.

This is about the 4th time it happens. When I randomly open a program, sometimes the whole computer will just freeze. I can't change to a terminal window with Ctrl-Alt-F1,2,3,4 or anything. I can only press the Reset button on the computer case. This is frustrating because I already lost ALL my firefox settings and addons and I don't want anything like this to keep on happening.

The problem was: *drumroll* the POWER SOURCE.

Apparently the voltage was having little drops and this caused all the hardware to freeze. This caused the system operation to be WORSE after I bought the new graphics card (since it was bigger and needed more power). I bought a new powersource and installed it and it seems everything is alright now.

Ubuntu :: Random Win7 Freezes After 1.0.10 Install?

Oct 16, 2010

I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 running on my Asus laptop. I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows, as I will need it for work. It was installed via side-by-side and re-sized the partition

The installation of Ubuntu was flawless and works great, but now when I boot to Windows, its will randomly freeze, sometimes in 1 minute, sometimes within 10 minutes.

The only way I can solve this issue, is to either perform a disk scan from windows or restore the MBR.

The disk scan works, and Windows run fine, although If I boot Ubuntu again, run that for awhile, then boot windows again the problem returns.

Restoring the MBR works as well, though without a dualboot, its useless

I have also tried EasyBCD and replaced GRUB with Windows boot manager, though same problems.

Hardware :: Random Freezes In Ubuntu / Sabayon And Others

Jul 27, 2010

I had Linux Mint installed and it became subject to random freezes. The system was never under any serious strain at the times that this occurred. I went to the Ubuntu forums and discovered that this is a relatively common problem with Ubuntu and that there's no fix available. I tried almost all advice offered there, without any remedy. These included disabling Flash, Java, Compiz, Nvidia drivers etc etc.

I decided to try another distro. Since then I've had random freezes in Suse, Sabayon and even with a Fedora live disc. Oddly enough, I never have this issue with Win 7 (I dual boot). If this is a hardware problem, why does it never occur under Win 7? If it is, as I suspect a hardware issue, how can I identify the source of the problem and resolve it?

Ubuntu :: Cairo-dock Causing Random Freezes?

May 28, 2010

I'd been using karmic for ages with no probs. I did a fresh install of lucid when it came out and installed compiz and cairo-dock. Rather annoyingly my computer started to completely freeze. I couldn't get a shell up, I couldn't ssh from another machine and the sysrq keys didn't work (the fan picked up speed almost immediately). The freezing didn't seem to follow any pattern and wasn't happening when accessing the dock. I decided to disable compiz (and cairo-dock) to see if this helped. It did! I reintroduced compiz with no problems, but as soon as I introduced cairo-dock, I started to get the same problem.

I've not been able to find anything in the general logs to give any clues. ubuntu lucid

Ubuntu :: Ubu Karmic 2 Lucid Upgrade Now Random Freezes / Fix It?

Apr 26, 2011

1st post @ LQ. Ubuntu user since 2007ish. Lots of PC experience... now vexed by upgrade from 9.10 Karmic to 10.04LTS Lucid.

The problem: random freezes whenever I boot into Lucid as user through usual Grub menu. The freeze sequence is: 1- screen stops, 2- mouse pointer freeze w/ no effect on click but moves freely and keyboard is useless, 3- screen blacks out for about 30 seconds and then returns but is unusable and 4- constant HDD activity for about 5-10 seconds. I have waited several minutes for a recovery of some sort but no dice. I reboot via on/off or reset button. Ubu deletes 2 inodes and then I'm off and running again.

If I boot through the recovery console there are no problems at all. The recovery console sequence: 1- select recovery from Grub menu, 2- at recovery menu select drop to root command prompt, 3- give root password, 4- enter 'gdm' at console prompt, finish boot up in my only user desktop (not root.)

I have not been able to find any log files that show an error message, but I'm not so tech oriented that I would necessarily know one if I saw one. Through many hours of browsing posts describing Lucid problems @ UbuntuForums (one of which has over 1,000 responses) I have found my '.xsession-errors' file (attached) is full of data.code...

Debian Multimedia :: Audacious / Audio Freezes For A Few Seconds

Mar 28, 2015

I have a very fresh and basic install of the weekly jessie build (this week). I've installed nvidia drivers, some non-free plugins, virtualbox, basic system tools, etc. The issue is while playing in audacious, the song will freeze for about 5 seconds. It's always around 5 seconds. Sometimes it's once or twice per song, sometimes I'll play 10 songs without it happening. BTW, all music is on a separate hard drive on an NTFS partition.

In audacious, I'm using the Winamp skin. I noticed when trying to play for the first time, it wouldn't play unless I changed the setting in audacious to use ALSA. That was the only way I could go to Settings and select my SPDIF digital output. But then doing that, other sounds no longer worked (in iceweasel). So I downloaded pavu, was able to select my onboard digital stereo output, set audacious back to pulse audio, and everything now works. Only issue is audacious is freezing every now and then... Is there a driver or module that I need to check for? Is there a way to get everything to use ALSA?

I once tried AV Linux for the low latency kernel but since it was based on Wheezy and I wasn't familiar with repos, everything was extremely outdated, so I migrated away. Should I need an LL kernel for 320kbps audio playback? I haven't sat and watched a full mkv yet, some of those have 1.5mpbs audio.
