Ubuntu :: Can't Access Drive With System Studio / Make It Possible?

I have Ubuntu Studio installed on a separate drive. I recently built a new system and installed Windows 7 with Ubuntu Lucid (not Studio) onto a new and faster drive. I need to access the data on the Ubuntu Studio drive but all I get is the grub and lost+found directories along with a number of preempt files.
The drive was originally setup with LVM.
I mainly want to get the contents of my home directory copied to some other drive but can't reach it.
I'm a new comer to Linux world, and I wish I can find help with some difficulties that I might face. I have a machine with Window 7 and Ubuntu (dual boot), windows 7 is installed on C drive and ubuntu installed on D drive, when I'm on Window, I put a folder named folder1 on D drive root beside (not inside) the main ubuntu folder. when I open ubuntu I can't see that file on D drive, I tried to search for it but couldn't find it, how can I access this file please ?
There is a shared drive (on a Samba server using Solaris, I guess) on a machine in our network. In windows, in order to access it I had to map the network drive by providing it's URI (http://blah.domain.com/dir1) and a username and password. How do I achieve the same thing in Ubuntu? While a terminal based solution is all I need.
i'm using stuido 10.10 and am trying to get wireless to work. i've used Network Settings to enable the wireless connection with correct ESSID and Network Password, though when i type iwconfig it says Access Point: Not-Associated.how do i associate with the AP?
I performed a fresh install on my computer and everything seemed to work just fine. I then rebooted the machine and the first thing the comp asked for was a username and password in a command prompt. I entered my info and then the comp just sat there showing my username and @ubuntu (or something that i can't remember right now - I am at work). What command do i need to enter to get to the installed desktop. I actually wanted to install Ubuntu Studio but the computer i was on had an old DVD drive that was not working well and would not allow itself to be detected. Then I tried loading the ISO data on a USB but that did not fly either. I ended up using unetbootin to load the data my usb but then the install wanted to download data from the web rather than my thumbdrive. how to A) get in to my Ubuntu desktop and B)get the studio version loaded up once i have access to the desktop?
What i really need to know is if there is a way to access a Ubuntu file system on a hard drive from a live CD. When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.
Actually i have to make one share folder on linux in such way that user should only read the documents from shared folder and they should not take prints of that folder.could any one telme what server i should use.?samba or nfs?how can i stop client users to stop taking prints from that shared folder.
This probably isn't the best way to go about this, but I am pretty nooby. I took the hard drive with Ubuntu install and made it the second SATA drive, and then put a new SATA drive in as the first and installed Fedora on it.Now I want to access my files from the Ubuntu drive and put them on the new drive but when I try to access it, I can look at some files but the majority of them (like my music and a lot of my documents) it says that I don't have permission.Is there some way I can get to these files? I tried searching but I couldn't find anything relevant
I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

I insert a LAN cable to my laptop and access internet. or I insert the cable to my wifi router and access it wireless whenever I am bit far away. RHEL 5.0 Linux 1) UNABLE to access internet when I connect the lan cable to my laptop. 2) Is there any way i can access internet or should i use any drivers that are provided my dell pc. I am very new to linux and i am not sure to which and how to use it.
I used to know how to access and rw other linux drives and do the fstab magic. For some reason I've lost my touch. I just want the drive to automount and have full access. I don't need a beginners tutorial on mkdir and fdisk -l. Is there a foolproof way to get my drives to do what I want? I dual boot fedora and ubuntu, but have the same issues on both.
I want to add a Lacie external drive to x64 box with SL55, but it has only Firewire interface. After searching a bit the net I could not find a working solution how to make the PCI card and the drive recogizable by the system, even if I removed Firewire from RHEL blacklist. The system does not see this piece of hardware. Does anyone has a positive experience with RHEL/SL with that issue? Similar trends search lists only quite old treads - ane recent experience?
I upgraded from Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 to Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and running a dual boot system with Windows. On the grub screen there are four listings now for Ubuntu. Two recover modes and two ubuntu modes. Is this normal? Going to reboot and see if I can get a picture of it.
I recently scapped XP Pro on an old laptop (Toshiba Portege 7220)as it was so slow and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 - All installed ok and it worked fine for about a month. Last week I switched on, got the Ubuntu splash screen and thats where it stayed. I gave lappy to a friend of mine that knows about Pc's (hahaha). When I got it back he said he'd wiped the HDD and partially installed xp. The install apparantly hung after the reformat and copying files onto it.My problem now is I can't boot from HDD, Ubuntu Live CD or Windows CD - Laptop is set to boot from cd then hdd.When I try to boot from CD, the cd is read as I hear the drive being used also see light for cd flashing, after a while i get a blank screen with flashing cursor in top left corner and the cd stops.If I remove the HDD and put it in external usb caddy I can see the windows folders/files when plugged into my desk top.My questions are :-
1. Is there any way to make the drive reusable as a internal drive again as I know it works as an external drive.I would like to reinstall Ubuntu on it
2. Is it a fault with the laptop itself - how do I check
I have a USB drive on which I want to install Arch Linux (using the installer, not unetbootin or something similar, as I want the drive to be persistent.) The computer from which I want to boot this USB supports booting from a USB floppy, not a normal drive. Is there any way for me to make a USB floppy on another drive and use that to boot the normal USB drive?
Unfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I have two external hard drives. One is a 2.5" 80GB USB HDD and the other is a Seagate 3.5" USB 500GB HDD. Both hard drives are mounted properly and I can access the data on both hard drives. I can access the small 80GB HDD via ssh from another computer and delete files, but when I try to access the 500GB drive via ssh it says access denied. When I try to access it with root, I can access it but I cannot see any files listed.
I want to load ubuntu on my home pc. I have two hard drives but not have enough dvd's to back everything up on #2 hard drive. If I load ubuntu on drive 1 can I get in two drive two?
I am running a hp dv701175nr laptop and am booting ubuntu 11.04 from a usb flash drive. I can not seem to find my internal drive that has windows 7 stored on it. I tried to mount it but it give me this error:
Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdb1 is already mounted on / mount failed
I can't use this operating system if I can't access my windows 7 drive and I really want to use this OS .
EDIT: Okay, so I think I have found my problem, but I don't know how to fix it, there are differences in my mtab and fstab commands, I will post what they say in a second, but I do not know how or what I need to do to change and make the settings right
I am using ubuntu 11.04 in my home desktop. Is it necessary that firewall should be active inorder to avoid hack? I heard that we will not be given static ip address, only paid one will get static ip address that can be used for web server implementation. If my system doesnt have static address then can others access my system?
I have minor problem with upgrading a hard drive. I am running an old pentium lll with two hard drives. On the first hard drive I have two partitions of around 90GB each. On the first partition is installed winXP and on the second partition I have Suse 10.3, both booted by grub and living happily side by side. My second hard drive (which is formatted for windows is only 4GB.
My problem arises when I try to replace the 4GB with a 80Gb hard drive. When I disconnect the 4GB drive the system fails to boot up and complains with error 21.
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 in my new netbook. I ran synaptic once, and pressed the refresh button. But while the package list was being downloaded, I tried to moved to a better location to get a better wifi signal, and my connection quit.
I tried again, but this time I had logged in to a network that had no Internet connection automatically. I tried downloading the package list again, before realizing I was logged on to the wrong network.
I logged on the correct network and tried again. Synaptic gives me the following message. There is not way through this. When I close the message synaptic quits.

I'm a little security paranoid, there are a lot of times that my terminal is available to prying eyes and listless fingers. As a security minded individual, I would like to make sure to lock down my Ubuntu (11.04b3) install in one of the best ways I can think of, and require a dongle to access my box. Is this something any of you other security minded people have done?
What are other great ways to lock my terminal? I would like to make sure that not only the "average" user, but also the ABOVE average user will not be able to penetrate my system without a key. Let me know what you think, and other measures I can take.

the user www-data should have read access to my folder but i am still getting a 403 forbidden error i have done this before without issue anyone see what is wrong? i have a folder i use for file transfers over IM it is more reliable than the messengers file transfer abilities
There is a way to make a remote access from a Ubuntu Linux to a Windows 7 machine using RDP(Remote Desktop Protocol)? I use "mstsc.exe" for Windows to Windows connections. What is like "mstsc.exe" that I can easily run from Ubuntu?
I've had it for about 2 months and I know some of the complicated things. I was wondering how I would make Ubuntu 10.10 ask for the root password when ever looking at a folder, picture, mp3 file, etc. Is this possible
My karmic ubuntu studio will no longer boot. I believe I may have intermittent hard drive issues. I've backed up all my important files so I'm not extremely worried; however, I would like to try to get my setup bootable once more. I've reinstalled grub, and on trying to boot, I get the grub kernel selection. Regardless of what I choose, the system won't boot. I believe grub is alright, but something else is not. What else could I try to make it boot again? I've mounted the drive, chrooted to it, updated and upgraded, but it still won't boot. I may be doing that wrong, or there may be something else I need to do.
