The laptop can see the drive as '500 GB Hard Disk: 524 MB Filesystem' and it's clearly mounted under the '/media' directory. However, when I attempt to read the files on it, I am only able to see the 524mb section of the drive. The external hard drive is an ext3 file system (running fedora13) and I believe it's encrypted.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just finished installing Lucid Lynx on an iMac7,1. So far, everything looks good, except for the fact that I am unable to access my external firewire drive. I know that outside of the Mac world, firewire isn't seen very often, but I was under the impression that it was supported. It doesn't show up in the /mnt directory of my new system, or my desktop. Then again, I am new to Ubuntu, and the filesystem looks a bit different from Mac and Debian, the two other *nix filesystems that I am the most familiar with. It shows up fine in Snow Leopard.

Both hard drives are mounted properly and I can access the data on both hard drives. I can access the small 80GB HDD via ssh from another computer and delete files, but when I try to access the 500GB drive via ssh it says access denied. When I try to access it with root, I can access it but I cannot see any files listed.

Im having a serious issue with booting ubuntu 10.04, the issue being it wont boot up at all, after working so well for so long (i suspect some recent dodgy system updates are responsible) so I decided to just reinstall ubuntu from scratch again but wanted to retrieve some important files from my root device. So I am running the live desktop and I can see my previous filesystems under places but cannot mount or open my original root device where the files I want to recover are located, I receive this error msg:"Unable to mount 77 GB Filesystem.

I have a back up hard drive I cannot access. When I try to move folders there I get the message 'access denied'. It is probably a simple permissions problem.I need some help to get permission to access it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe only way I can eject a cd from either of my drivers is to restart my pc. The buttons don't work and neither does the eject control withing the device widget in my panel. It says the device is in use even though I am done with it. This is stupid. Everything else in this operating system is beautiful and works great (except the version of Audacity had to be replaced with one that is actually usable.) Other than that everything is great , way better than windows - but I can't do something as SIMPLE as eject a cd??? How stupid is that?? I am actually angry - being angry at a computer is something that happens when using windows computers - should not happen whilst using OpenSuse.
View 5 Replies View Related I can put a CD or DVD in the drive, mount it, read it & unmount it. But I cannot take the disk out of the drive once it has been place in the drive without
1) Physically holding the CD draw open
2) Shutting down SUSE.
As soon as the drive starts to eject the disk, the draw is forced closed again. This happens if the eject button is pressed, or the sudo eject command is issued. For some reason, the draw is being instructed to close again almost immediately after it opens. I've managed to extract disks by grabbing the draw when it starts to open, but I'm afraid I will damage the drive this way.I do not think this is a hardware issue, as other OSs run on this system do not seem to have this problem.
I'm running openSUSE 11.1 32-bit and I'm trying to use my external USB DVD-RW drive. I've tried loading two 11.1 discs in the drive and both of them fail.After putting the dvd in the drive I mount with::mount/dev /scd0 /media/cdrom
and it comes back with:mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so.Second question is can I use this external USB DVD-RW drive to install linux from, or does it have to be an internal drive? If so is there anything special I need to do to get it to look at the drive during boot. I take it this is dependant on a BIOS setting. This is all assuming of course I can get my dvd's to read.
i jsut installed opensuse kde and xfce and i cannot mount dvd/cd 's. i am using opensuse 11.3 32 bit. i added my user to the cdrom drive group but still no luck. How to get the cd to mount by jsut clicking on the dolphin icon?

I did the latest update on the opensuse 11.4 other day and since then my USB drive is not mounting. initially I thought its gone because my son dropped on the floor. But then when I plugged it to Windows 7 machine it mounted then I plugged it into another Ubuntu 10.10 machine it mounted so I figured out the there is some issue in the latest update. I have all the VMs in this drive and my main laptop is with OpenSuse 11.4
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running OpenSuse 11.4 with Gnome3, with 2 hard drives. One is for the system and has three partitions - root, swap, and home. The second is only data storage. Last week I started getting popups stating I had a hard drive going bad. I checked SMART status in disk utility and had several bad sectors on the system drive, so I cloned the drive to a new one with Clonezilla. Here is where everything went kooky. When I booted the new disk I had a ton of errors at boot along the lines of unable to find a drive. Upon closer inspection I realized the the system located the drives by device id instead of the traditional /dev/sdx. So I started playing with grub settings but never could get it to stop looking for the old hdd. Next, I popped in my net install disc and found I could do an upgrade install which proceeded normally. When I rebooted, no more boot errors, but I get to the black screen with spinning cursor and it will not proceed any further, I even let it run overnight and when I woke up, spinning cursor. As for troubleshooting, I was able to CTRL+ALT+F2 to a console and log in as root successfully but not as a user. When I try to log in as a user, I enter my username, then password, the "have a lot of fun" flashes by quickly and I am returned to a login prompt. I logged in to the console as root and created a new user and tried logging in again, but same thing. I am able to do an ls -l on /home/mike and all my files are there and the listed permissions look ok. I am at a loss as to what to try next. My old hdd will still boot, I just pulled it to reduce risk af data loss. I have never used auto yast before but I always see the prompt for it during an install. Can I clone the system with auto yast on to a different hard drive. Does it strip the by-device-id from the image? Which logs should I check?

View 9 Replies View RelatedJust installed opensuse 11.3 Kdeversion on my laptop. Before installing it on live mode i had a problem of accessing my other drives (NTFS, FAT32 and EXT4) which said HAL system policy...etc mounting error. I could access all drives with root privilege. I thought problem will be solver once i install opensuse on my system. How ever i was really disappointed after seeing the same problem post install. Googled around for the solution and got this link

After this the problem got worse now i am not able to see any of the drives in the side panel. Gone through many forum and posts all discuss about external USB HDD.
I have mentioned this in another thread elsewhere but perhaps this is a better location. In Opensuse 11.3 I was able to play files on my NAS drive from within smplayer over samba shares or ftp. I would simply use dolphin to browse to the file on the nas drive (either through samba or ftp protocol), double click the .avi file and it would load smplayer and begin playing immediately.
In 11.4 I have samba set up using the same smb.conf file However, if I double click the .avi file it copies the entire contents to the local computer before launching smplayer. If I use smplayer's file selector and navigate to the file on the samba share I get the message "you can only select local files" This is a different behaviour to that from 11.3 However, using the ftp protocol from within dolphin smplayer launches immediately and begins playing. smplayer is launched using the shortcut command
Code:
smplayer %U
Does anybody have any suggestions on a workaround or how to correct? Using kaffeine I have no problems. Double click the file on the nas drive and kaffeine launches immediately and begins playing.
Dual Booting my laptop and unable to change the Boot Records on the drive. Not because I dont know how, but my primary OS will fail to boot(win7).
I have drive partitioned as follows...
sda1 = Win7 system (default install)
sda2 = Win7 Main (default install)
sda3 = swap
sda4 = Extension (I think thats what its called)
sda5 = / (ext4)
What I need is a boot cd or perferably Grub installed on a 256MB Thumb drive with the options to load the installed system from sda5.
I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

The installation goes normally, up until it comes time to switch from disc 1 to disc 2. View 1 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that the OS does not show my 2nd DVD drive (slave to the first one).I tried editing fstab as per man pages, and as per several instructions I got using google, but to no avail. In the end, I reinstalled Debian with a data CD in the 2nd DVD drive, hoping that the presence of media would "force" Debian to recognize the drive - but this did not help. In the end,as I am completely clueless, please help me to help the OS recognize and provide access to the 2nd drive.
Here are a few things that can help explain better- > 1. see the attached picture file for "inside" the Computer. Note the Slave DVD drive does not appear.Screenshot of Computer Icon on Desktop showing that only the Primary DVD drive is visible - and not the Slave DVD drive.
