Fedora :: Automounting Drive With Full Access On Dual Boot System?

Feb 24, 2010

I used to know how to access and rw other linux drives and do the fstab magic. For some reason I've lost my touch. I just want the drive to automount and have full access. I don't need a beginners tutorial on mkdir and fdisk -l. Is there a foolproof way to get my drives to do what I want? I dual boot fedora and ubuntu, but have the same issues on both.

Fedora :: Automounting Hard Drives Other Than The System Drive

Oct 5, 2009

I've installed Fedora 10 short time after it came out. Now I am having some problems unmounting thes drives on restart or shutdown. It hangs at the stage of 'unmounting file system'. I've looked into this matter and discovered that those drives are automatically mounted and shown on the Gnome file browser. As the /etc/fstab indicates, it is not mounted by it. I must have done something to have all the hard drives shown in the file browser and now Fedora seems to be unable to unmount them.

Fedora Hardware :: Plextor DVD Drive Not Automounting

I have used disk manager and I can see the DVD drive listed.I have told disk manager to mount the DVD but I still cannot find it in Dolphin. Also, a strange problem is that in Disk Manager trying to speed test any of my optical drives fails, it says that the transfer rate is too slow to measure.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Boot With MBR On First Drive With XP And F14 On Other

Dec 5, 2010

I am not smart enough to figure out how to install Fedora 14 correctly. I have an older computer with 2 20gb drives. On the first drive (sda) I have Windows XP, and on the 2nd drive (sdb) I am trying to install Fedora 14. The catch is that I would like to put Grub and the MBR on the first drive so that when the computer boots, it asks whether to load Windows XP or Fedora. I know I have done it with Fedora 13 in the past, but have forgotten how to do it. How to accomplish this in Anaconda for Fedora 14?

Fedora :: Dual Boot Single Hard Drive Off USB

Oct 5, 2010

I currently have Windows 7 installed on my laptop and I would like to dual boot w/ Fedora on the same hdd.I have two NTSF partitions, I shrunk my D drive 50GB for ext4 & swap.I've tried both liveusb-created & unetbootin to create a bootable USB to install Fedora.Anaconda starts up and I get through most of the install configuration, I set up GRUB & the partitions. Once I proceed to the next screen I get missing ISO image 9660 error My laptop doesn't have a DVD drive. It seems like a lot of people are getting this error, but I have found no concrete solution though.

How do I put the image on the drive? Windows can't read ext4 and I haven't been able to find a program that can.I have a USB to SATA adapter that I could hook up a DVD-ROM drive too, but I don't know if fedora will pick up on it.

Fedora Installation :: Windows 7 And F10 Dual-boot Single Drive?

Feb 1, 2009

After going back & forth between win7b & F10 installs, I can't get both to live on the same hard disk for dual booting anymore. win7 complains about fedora's GPT disk being unacceptable for installation. win7 blows away fedora's GPT partitions when it installs. Fedora doesn't recognize win7 partitions when it installs. I can't specify exact partition boundaries with windows even if I know what they are, and I can't seem to find any info how to do it in parted either. I have win7 installed in partition 3 in a known location on disk, but if I reinstall f10 (again), it's going to blow away the win7 boot data on the disk. How do I tell grub where to find the chainloader thingy? Can that still even be used? win7 no longer uses ntldr, and I haven't found an updated procedure for this new boot method.

Fedora Installation :: Add F10 As Dual Boot To F8 System?

Aug 25, 2009

I have managed to reduce the default LVM F8 install to make room for F10... See Bare metal backup:

[URL]

And shrink the partition:

[URL]

I now have about 50G free on a 80G drive. The F8 system has a small /boot and an LVM partition that includes swap. What I want to do is install F10 WITHOUT LVM on the free space. Access to the F8 LVM drive would be a plus but not complete necessary. I just want to keep the F8 system as is until I get set up with everything under f10, which may be a bit. I am not sure what to enter for mount points for the custom drive layout. I need a small swap partition (I don't want to use F8 swap because it will be going away in the future, for example when I install F12 and have dual boot F10/F12 system. What should I have as primary partitions and which as secondary?

How do I set up the boot? Grub?

OpenSUSE Install :: Get Full Control Of Win 7 Files (dual Boot) In 11.3 KDE?

Jan 11, 2011

I have Suse 11.3 KDE dual boot with Win 7. There is a Desktop Folder on the main screen, with one icon named "My Computer". when I click this icon, Konqueror opens a window with detailed information of the System along with Disk Information (detailed partitions of Windows 7). Once I select any one of these partitions, it opens the one said partition.

One thing I have noticed, if I "Right Click" a folder in this Win 7 partition, there is an option of opening that folder with Dolphin Super user Mode. After using this, I can edit the contained subfolders or files. On the other hand if there is a file (i.e. outside a folder), there is no option of Super user Mode and I cannot edit these files. at times I have to rename them or delete them. But for doing so I have to restart computer and go into Windows (which I don't like)is there any way of having a full control of Suse and Windows (permanently). I read the thread mentioned here: FSTAB - Editing Manually

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Full Disk Encryption - Windows 7 And 9.10

Feb 13, 2010

I've been wanting to do this for a while and after upgrading some of my pc components I decided I would finally try to dual boot with full disk encryption on both windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. I managed to encrypt the windows drive with truecrypt and that worked. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the alternate cd and everything but /boot is in an encrypted LVM. Each OS is on a separate SATA drive the windows is on sda1 and ubuntu /boot is sdb1.

To setup the dual boot I started out following the tutorial [url] but its for XP and versions of ubuntu that use grub not grub 2. I ran dd as posted and saved the files it produced from truecrypt. I then ran into some problems with grub reinstallation so I simply reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch again. This put grub 2 on the computer. I've managed to get it to add a Windows 7 option.

However, when the option is selected truecrypt comes up and says that the bootloader is corrupted and that I need to use the repair CD I burned before I encrypted the drive. My question is does anyone have any experience dual booting using Truecrypt on Windows 7 and LUKS/dm-crypt on Ubuntu 9.10 with grub 2? And how would I get the boot menu to work? I'd rather not reinstall but if I have to I have images from right before I encrypted so it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Fedora :: Dual Boot System - Linking To A Directory In Windows?

Jan 22, 2011

I have a dual boot system. I previously managed to mount that drive under Fedora by specifying its label in /etc/fstab. But something changed that label, so I had to modify the entry in fstab. This time, using blkid I found the proper UUID and put that in /etc/fstab. So now I can mount the partition. But I also want to create a link on my desktop to my files under Windows. The location is /mnt/c/Documents and Settings/len/My Documents But ln -s keeps failing on that because of the spaces in the name. I know I found a workaround that previously , but I can't remember what it is.

Fedora :: Running A Dual Boot Windows 7 Home Premium And 12 System On An AMD Phenom Platform

May 31, 2010

I am/was(?) running a dual boot Windows 7 Home Premium and Fedora 12 system on an AMD Phenom platform.

I thought that I would try the KDE desktop and installed it with the command

yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

After tasting KDE for a while I decided that I far prefer Gnome.

I removed the KDE with

yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

This appeared to work but I then found that whilst I can boot into Windows 7, I can no longer boot into Fedora 12.

I have tried booting the F12 DVD and going into to the Rescue function. I re-installed grub but still cannot boot into F12.

I have looked at grub.conf but can see nothing wrong.

Fedora Installation :: Make A Dual Boot System (Vista And Linus) By Overwriting The Previous Suse?

Jun 26, 2009

I actually have a Suse running on a partitioned harddisk of 27GB but I prefer Fedore anyway. I would like to install Linus Fedora on my computer to make a dual boot system (Vista and Linus) by overwriting the previous Suse. My question is

Will I be in OS booting trouble (i.e unable to resurect the previous boot screens, windows might possibly be deleted, or not be present in the boot options) if this is done ?

Also, because I have only one disk (the first disk of Fedora 11 downloaded), will it be fine with just one first disk ? (there are several to download but I think I assume I am not going to use all of them during installation, right ?)
