There is a shared drive (on a Samba server using Solaris, I guess) on a machine in our network. In windows, in order to access it I had to map the network drive by providing it's URI (http://blah.domain.com/dir1) and a username and password. How do I achieve the same thing in Ubuntu? While a terminal based solution is all I need.

I successfully installed Samba, but have problem with access to any shared folder on my secondary drive. If I try access secondary drive with admin user, everything is fine. If with another account try to access via samba to shared folder on partition with Ubuntu, everything is fine again. Every folder has set privileges to read&write to everyone, so shouldn't be problem here.
View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter adding a second ubuntu variant to this machine I wanted to share the home directories so I had easy access to the same files regardless. so I read up on modifying home directories and put in the correct location and then rebooted. On boot-up the system warned me that it could not access the "shared" home directory and after a few more errors and warnings ended up at a blank screen with a mouse pointer!. All I can do is access a term window (ctrl-alt f4). So what I need is to know is where the user properties are stored so I can go and edit those from term rather than the usual way!

I have a machine with Window 7 and Ubuntu (dual boot), windows 7 is installed on C drive and ubuntu installed on D drive, when I'm on Window, I put a folder named folder1 on D drive root beside (not inside) the main ubuntu folder. when I open ubuntu I can't see that file on D drive, I tried to search for it but couldn't find it, how can I access this file please ?
I have Ubuntu Studio installed on a separate drive. I recently built a new system and installed Windows 7 with Ubuntu Lucid (not Studio) onto a new and faster drive. I need to access the data on the Ubuntu Studio drive but all I get is the grub and lost+found directories along with a number of preempt files.
The drive was originally setup with LVM.
I mainly want to get the contents of my home directory copied to some other drive but can't reach it.
Installed fedora/configued samba, shared printer and i am not able to access shared printer from any of the fedora machine. I am able to access the printer /shared folder from windows machine. I dont know the process of cups installation.

When i acess it now it just shows the Windows files on it, and i cant access the Ubuntu partition. What happened was this: I was trying to install Ubuntu on an external hard drive. I moved all the settings to the Hard drive so i didnt think it would affect my other drives. I mustve missed one of them because insteading of loading GRUB like it normally does, it came up with GRUB error 21 and did nothing. I tried to fix it, but nothing worked. I finally decided to unplug everything except the external and install it from there, so id atleast have a functioning desktop. As it turns out, my comp doesnt suport USB booting. So the only way i can use my computer is by Live CD. I was trying to fix things so i had both hard drives power supply unplugged. being slightly drowsy from staying up late that night, I plugged them in while my computer was on. the first one went in just fine, no problems. The second one though, also my master drive, i was having troubles pluging in. while i was turning it to fit in, it made a big spark and shocked my master drive. That drive had my MBR and Windows on it. Now It cant find a MBR, and i cant access the ubuntu partition on my slave drive. Is there any way to save this?? im 99.9% sure ive screwed myself over hardcore epically, but im hoping to save at least 1/2 my data.

I took the hard drive with Ubuntu install and made it the second SATA drive, and then put a new SATA drive in as the first and installed Fedora on it.Now I want to access my files from the Ubuntu drive and put them on the new drive but when I try to access it, I can look at some files but the majority of them (like my music and a lot of my documents) it says that I don't have permission.Is there some way I can get to these files? My Windows 7 machine sees and accesses it just fine. My OSX computer sees it in the finder window, but says it can't access it because it can't find the original file. I have tried to "repair the alias" but it doesn't work. I have shared another folder on the Ubuntu desktop, but the new share is on the desktop internal hard drive. OSX can access that share with no problems. What in the world is going on? If Windows 7 can see and access, is this an OSX problem or is there a terminal command that I am missing? I am networking using Samba on the Ubuntu computer and the explorer/finder windows on the Windows7/OSX computers.

It never used to do this, in fact when i went to places the network was not called "network", it was my own title. i can connect to the server with the ip address, but that only lets me take files from the windows network, and not the other way around. I really have two issues
1. cannot place files on the network from my ubuntu laptop
2. cannot connect to shared folder network from places like i could before

So, it took me a few years to come back to Linux. Had used it MANY years ago, and have been meaning to revisit it for some time now and finally have. Tried a couple other OSs that were just, frankly, garbage. But, not Ubuntu! So far, I haven't had any of the issues I've seen posted here. I decided to use my worst system as a test environment - an old Jetta Jetbook 9450. Loaded up with no problems, most noted none of the "searching for drivers" issue that I ran into with other OSs! All that being said, I do have one question - how do I get the laptop to join my network so that I can view my shared drives? In Windows, it's simply change WORKGROUP to my network name. Been flipping through the options, and I'm sure I may have overlooked it.

I just installed ubuntu on a pc, with 2 other pc's in my network - one runs Windows XP and the other Windows 7.
When I go to Network -> Windows Network -> WORKGROUP I can see both Windows computers. But when I try to open either one of them, it asks me for a username and password. Now, neither of the Windows machines have passwords (they just login automatically).
(I haven't used Ubuntu since the earlier versions and remember having to go through samba and set up config files, etc.).
Been using Ubuntu now almost 1 year and love it but I'm still mostly lost so I need someone to explain in great detail how to be able to access the My Documents folder on my LAN XP machine. I've been up and working fine for 6 or 8 months but all of the sudden (maybe it was an update package?) I get the following error message, after a long delay, when trying to access the shared folder:
Could not open location 'smb://office/my%20documents/'Failed to mount Windows share.I have set an icon on the top panel mapped to the XP machine and launched by launcher.
After upgrade to 11.04 I have no way to access SMB shared drives using Nautilus. When I click on "Network / Windows Network" I have the message: "unable to mount location failed to retrieve list from server". Couple of remarks: This is a regression It's not only a "Windows" network - this label has to be renamed. The message does not help the average user at all - this is a geeky way of communicating with the end-user.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've set up a laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 32bit and shared specific folders on my Win7 PC. Everything should work okay as they both can see each other, but when I try on Ubuntu to access the Win7 shared folder it asks me for username and password. In Win7 I'm always logged in as Administrator with no password set and Ubuntu won't let me connect to it leaving the password blank. It just keeps asking for my username/password over and over again without any kind of error message. It doesn't come up with 'access denied' or anything, it just keeps refreshing the username/password login/connect gui so I can't say which side of the fence the problem is occurring on though I suspect it's on the Ubuntu side.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHeres what I have and what I am looking to do. I have a PC with a single core 2 Ghz Pentium processor and 1 gb of RAM. Its pretty limited in what it can do and run. It has two physical HDDs one a 250 GB SATA and the other a 160GB SATA. One the two hard drives I have the following partition structure:
160 GB HDD
28 GB Ubuntu OS Partition
2 GB Swap Partition
130 GB Free Partition (EXT4 but empty)
250 GB HDD
250 GB Free Partition (EXT4 but empty)
What I would like to do is the following:
1. Strip down Ubuntu 10.04 to where only the bare minimums run and system resources (Since they are so scarce on this system anyway) be readily available
2. Have the system run solely as a Samba File server for all other computers in the house to read and write to
3. Allow other "known" systems to access the shared folder without authentication, but any system with an unknown name, should have to authenticate first
4. Have the 130 GB from HDA and 250 GB from HDB, be presented as one network drive of 380 GB as opposed to two of 130 and 250 gb respectively
Are these things that are possible for a person of mid level understanding of Linux? How would one set about achieving all of the above goals?
My Ubuntu server has been serving me well for the last couple of months, now I wish to use it as a back up service for my family. I have installed a 2nd hard drive, formatted it and put several folders on it; but I cannot give permissions for other computers to access these folders. Note that I can see the folders via Samba but it keeps telling me that the permissions are incorrect. I have tried to change the permissions of the hard drive but they simply 'correct' themselves (I change it to anyone can 'read and write', it then changes it straight back). All the folders have full permissions for guests.
