Ubuntu :: CUPS Locked Up During Update Now Can't Uninstall Or Re-install?

Installed the latest updates on 10.10 and the update froze during cups. So after leaving a couple of hours while did something else I had to abort the updates.
This of course borked the updater so had to use the command sudo dpkg --configure -a
Then I tried sudo apt-get install -f
Which again broke at trying to install cups.
I then tried a forced uninstall but this complained about missing dependences. I corrected those but it still hangs on removing cups.
If you try an re-install the same the problem hangs.
I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:
- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port) - uninstalling cups... (update manager nags) - fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open) Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....
I updated the Kernel to 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop. First problem was in order to do that I had to uninstall ndiswrapper. Now I have multiple entries in the bootloader, the default, the desktop, and the openSUSE 11.3 -2.6.34-12. Since I am new to linux what am I suppose to do with all those entries?
The last complete update failed on one package (Cups Common - 1.0 mb), each time I login the update is offered via update manager and each time it fails with this message:
W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/po...ntu3.6_all.deb Connection failed [IP: 91.189.88.31 80]
can anyone shed light on this - (I'm running 9.04 Jaunty)
After a powerdown during my upgrade of Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 that rendered my operating system useless I can get to my /home folder. The /home folder is locked and can not be copied or read. This means I can't reinstall my stuff and keep my files. The rest of my data (except for the /root folder) seams to be unlocked. How can I get to my /home folder? Does anyone know how to unlock it?
Wednesday I went to work, docked and fired up my older Dell C840 laptop (running Fedora 12). It had a long list of updates that it downloaded and installed (it had been off for about a week). When the updates were finished, I noticed that my laptop had locked up. After waiting a while, I ended up doing a cold reboot. After that, I get the Fedora symbol that fills up, and then the screen goes black with a single cursor. You can type in anything and it is reflected- even control and ALT codes. If you hit CTL- ALT-F2, it goes into a terminal mode. You can do almost anything that you'd normally do in terminal mode. The video driver is the original off the install disk, and it's never been changed- it works fine right out of the box.
If I try to start up X-Windows, I get a segmentation fault error. I've tried deleting and then re-installing some of the packages that were updated (trying this via yum), no difference. I don't know what else to do. I need to get this laptop going before next week- it's my work computer and I do use it a lot. Is there any way to get in touch with the people who wrote the updates, and file a bug report? I'm using my main (home) system right now, that for a couple of reasons needs to stay on windoze XP for a few more weeks. I've been around computers for years, but not Linux.
After a recent software update I can no longer connect to the Cups server. My printer isn't listed anymore and won't let me add one. Cups was listed in the update so i think the update broke cups. I'm getting: "Failed to connect to server" when i try to connect to 'localhost'. What can I do?

Is there a way to upgrade cups to support the latest printers? For example if I am using 8.04 LTS server and I buy a newish printer, it won't work. Am I able to add a repository or apt-get upgrade to get the latest version?
My printer no longer prints anything with exception to the TestPrint page.Any other job I give it, it says is "completed" in the queue, though nothing has printed. Installed cups again, after a complete removal. No change. Heres what troubleshooting gave me:

I'm trying to setup a print server on Debian Lenny. This dedicated server is connected to an USB printer (Epson Stylus Office BX300f).
I've successfully installed cups and the guttenprint drivers from the repositories but then realized that I needed to upgrade the printer drivers if I wanted to get support for my USB printer. Thus, I built and installed the latest version of Guttenprint (5.2.6) from the sources but this procedure has not added any new driver (ppd files) into cups. I've read that cups-genppd and cups-genppdupdate must be used in order to generate the necessary ppd files and update them into the cups folders.
Well, I can find cups-genppd.5.0 and cups-genppdupdate.5.0 in /usr/sbin but I wonder if these binaries are related to the old drivers (gutenprint 5.0.2) and not to the new ones (gutenprint 5.2.6).
Anyway, I'm a bit messed with this stuff. I've read the man pages but there are very few examples explaining how to upgrade drivers in cups.
I have a printer configured on my Ubuntu server using CUPS amd made it available to the local network. The printer is recognized on my other Ubuntu machine without any problems. But on my Suse laptop, the printer is not recognized. Using the YaST printer Configuations, I choose the option "Recieve Printer Information from Remote CUPS servers. But no printer is found.But... when I choose Do All Yout Printing Directly via One Remote CUPS server and enter the correct IP address (192.168.1.100), the printer is found andI am sure the printer info is broadcasted because it shows up on my second Ubuntu PC. But why is it not recognized by default on my Suse machine
I've been trying to figure this out for longer than I care to admit. We upgraded our print server (sysadmin) to 64 bit lucid and that moved our cups server from 1.3.7 to 1.4.3. We have a remote server that is still 1.3.7 (printhost1) but version difference doesn't seem to be relevant to the problem.
If I'm on console on sysadmin and do an lpr to a printer on printhost1, everything is copacetic. However, If I'm on a host that specifies "ServerName sysadmin" in its "/etc/cups/client.conf" access_log on sysadmin shows:

We've been using this method of sharing printers between locations for years and years so it not working now is a surprise.
cupsd.conf on sysadmin looks like this and is as open as I can imagine:
Additional symptoms are that only printers locally defined on sysadmin show up when the client uses System>Administration>Printing in gnome. Same thing when you browse printers in windows on our samba domain controller that backends on CUPS.
I just know that it's something simple that's going to make me facepalm but I'm at a loss.
cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting! cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .
openSUSE 11.4, 64-bit locked, can't revokeLast night I kept the computer on since some downloads was in progress. I kept the screen locked and the monitor power off (turned off using the power button inbuilt in the monitor). Not many applications were running, it was only Opera browser as I remember.This morning, it didn't wake up when I turned on the monitor. Shouldn't it show up the login screen? I saw only a black screen with white mouse pointer init.I tried clicking, moving the mouse and tried to type the password. Anything didn't work. Finally I did CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE twice and got back to the login screen.
I have migrated from Debian to Fedora 14 (2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64). Problem is that I can't get my networked printer to work (which it did with Debian). The printer is Samsung ML-3561ND and I got all he drivers & PPD from Samsung support. I prefer to install the printer with CUPS and not with Samsung Unified Linux install software. I have to send my documents to a user's Windows workstation and print from there I have googled a lot but have not found any solution.
I am unable to update/install and uninstall software because something locked up on me. I'm using Suse 10.3 When i click on install/remove software or try to use updates I get the following error.
Code: System management is locked by the application with pid 2970 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd). Close this application before trying again. Rebooting has no effect and i could probably try opening packagekitd, but still unsure of what to do with it if I did.
I have installed Slackware 13 on one of the hard disks of my computer in order that I can get it working properly before changing over from 12.2.
My main problem is that I cannot get CUPS to change from 'Letter', which I presume is an American size, to A4, has anyone else had experience of this problem?
I am having a problem with some users who get locked out after more than 3 failed attempts at login. This is exactly what I want to see - they will eventually remember those stronger passwords (maybe?) - but how do I re-enable their access? I haven't tried this on a live box but I can easily recreate the situation via vnc to the server in question and I assume the result would be the same. I like the policy that leads to this but I do need to let them back in - eventually. Where is the blacklist kept and how do I edit/reset it?
I'm looking forward to using OpenSuse shortly, and hopefully the install is still being performed. I downloaded the GNOME iso and burnt to disc. It was partitioning my win7 drive and creating new partitions. I went to move the YAST screen and that led me to shaking the window (not knowing the screen would disappear).
Now I'm afraid something bad happened. Please tell me I didn't fry my hard drive! At the moment it appears I am running off the cd. I tried to run the Live installer again and got: The storage subsystem is locked by the application "y2base" (3620). You must quit that application before you can continue. I cannot tell if the partitioning/installation is still happening.
I've been struggling with CUPS on Debian for close to a year now. I've got both Debian Squeeze and Maverick on my EeePC that I use at work (at a high school). The printer we use is an NEC MultiWriter 3650N---a Japanese-only model; the only info I can find on it is in Japanese. NEC has a CUPS driver for it in a .deb package, but I have had absolutely no luck getting it to work---it only prints out garbage when it prints at all.The thing is, using Ubuntu I can get the printer working without installing the driver---I use the NEC MultiWriter Foomatic/npdl driver that comes with CUPS, and it Just Works.I'd rather be using Debian, but not being able to use the printer is a huge issue for me (I have to print out a lot of worksheets, etc).
I'm not too fond of the idea of installing an Ubuntu package on Debian, but if there's a safe way to do that in order to get access to the printer, I'd do it. How stupid would it be to try? However, there's a link posted below to URL... that provides a .ppd file that works. Remember to change the default paper size to A4, though, or the printer will complain that it's out of paper (because it'll be trying to print to US Letter Size by default).
I cannot uninstall Firefox, nor can I uninstall Chromium; one always stays if the other is uninstalled. For example, if I remove Firefox, Chromium will appear in its place and vice versa. This has got to be one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen on Ubuntu! So, how can I uninstall both web browsers?
installed lenny and am trying to install brother dcp7010 again:
1) i can't start CUPS server with /etc/init.d/cups restart "file not found", there is a cups@ link in /etc/init.d.
2) when i install dcp7010 cupswrapper

4)foomatic-gui can't find the installed dcp7010 lpr-driver
brdcp7010lpr-2.0.1-1.i386.deb, (a couple of days ago it did)
This is frustrating because it worked in etch and worked for awhile in lenny. The dcp7010-scanner does work.
I am trying to get a printer hooked up to my server and am told i need CUPS installed. I have networking set up and the Centos 5 is a host to a Windows XP guest using VMware. I am trying to get the server to act as a print server and know next to nothing about Linux. Can anyone walk me through the process please? I have downloaded CUPS-1.4.1-source.tar.bz2 and CUPS-1.4.1-source.tar.gz but do not know how to install things on Centos (or anything but Windows). Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Ok, so I tried to run the .deb package to install the Facebook chat plugin for Pidgin, and something got all messed up with that, and now nothing will install or uninstall. Synaptics won't run, Update Manager tells me to try a termianl command that doesn't work, and the Software center doesn't work either. I've attached screenshots of the problems. I've tried to download and reinstall the .deb file, and it still doesn't work.
I wanted to upload one more picture, but it only allows five. The last picture was of the terminal window. Here's what it said.

I got an error half way though so i thought nothing of it and went off to do other things. Now when i try and install or uninstall anything i get this message

My problem started with DVDrip and I mad an apt-on-cd DVD and installed from there rather than download the packages for my twop systems running karmic. I don't know what has happened but now if I try to install/upgrade/remove anything i get the following.
