i have try to kill the process with kill and process id command but when i try to install appn again i got the same prob,
I'm trying to install KDE 4,4 on my Netbook, Asus Eee PC 1201n. I've just done a clean install, instlaled my graphics drivers and now trying to upgrade to KDE 4.4. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm looking forward to using OpenSuse shortly, and hopefully the install is still being performed. I downloaded the GNOME iso and burnt to disc. It was partitioning my win7 drive and creating new partitions. I went to move the YAST screen and that led me to shaking the window (not knowing the screen would disappear).
Now I'm afraid something bad happened. Please tell me I didn't fry my hard drive! At the moment it appears I am running off the cd. I tried to run the Live installer again and got:
The storage subsystem is locked by the application "y2base" (3620).
You must quit that application before you can continue. I cannot tell if the partitioning/installation is still happening.
When I run zypper dup I get this message :
System management is locked by the application with pid 3787 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd).
Close this application before trying again.
How do I do this?

I use the Basic System for Co-operative Work (BSCW) to implement a collaboration environment in Apache. In previous versions of SuSE, I had created a BSCW user and group. The UID and GID that I had used is now assigned to some other system/application.Can someone refresh my memory on how to create a UID and GID in the 100-200 range?

I kept the screen locked and the monitor power off (turned off using the power button inbuilt in the monitor). Not many applications were running, it was only Opera browser as I remember.This morning, it didn't wake up when I turned on the monitor. Shouldn't it show up the login screen? I saw only a black screen with white mouse pointer init.I tried clicking, moving the mouse and tried to type the password. Anything didn't work. Finally I did CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE twice and got back to the login screen.

I am having a problem with some users who get locked out after more than 3 failed attempts at login. This is exactly what I want to see - they will eventually remember those stronger passwords (maybe?) - but how do I re-enable their access? I haven't tried this on a live box but I can easily recreate the situation via vnc to the server in question and I assume the result would be the same. I like the policy that leads to this but I do need to let them back in - eventually. Where is the blacklist kept and how do I edit/reset it?

I am in the process of creating a kickstart configuration file for some RedHat 5.5 and Centos 5.5 servers (Production and test respectively).I have googled about a bit but I cannot find a good list of the bare minimum packages required for a command-line system.If anyone knows how I can trim this list down anymore it would be much appreciated. The aim of this kickstart.cfg is to get the system booted to a bare minimum required to install Chef (Server management software). Chef will then setup Apache, Ruby on rails environment etc.
All this server will need to do is, from a static IP, Host a Ruby on rails app, send emails, send data to a server on the web, accept ssh and occasionally and connect to a SMB/CIFS share This list was taken from the anaconda-ks.cfg file after a RedHat install of what I thought was a pretty minimal system onto a VM but I noticed that cups, the avahi daemonsand gam_server are installed and running which I do not believe are needed for a pure web server.I know that these types of questions are hard to answer without a complete knowledge of the operating environment and what "minimum" is in this case ("@core only? but I wanted yum damnit!")

I've just installed openSuSE 11.2, and I need to disable the feature that causes the laptop to suspend when you close the lid (and it's plugged in to the wall). I've already done this for my user profile, and I've attempted to do it for the root profile, as well, but when the GDM login screen is shown, the laptop still suspends when you close the lid.

I opened the Power Management and I can see the red light next to "CPU can be turn off". Also, when I close laptop lid it doesn't go to "Suspend to RAM" mode it still spin the fan.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEven though I have been using Linux for quite some time now (as a private web server), now that I want to create a new web server, I am willing to know exactly what is the philosophy of Ubuntu regarding package version management.
Let's use phpBB as an example, as I used it on my first server, and I intend to use it again on my new one. phpBB is currently in version 3.0.7 In the official Ubuntu software repository, phpBB is currently in version 3.0.4 Now I am facing a philosophical question: should I simply download the official version and simply deal with it, or is it more 'the Ubuntu philosophy' to stick to the 'supported' version, 3.0.4, even though, this version is a year and a half old?
I know that Ubuntu is based on Debian, which is itself a very secured Linux, which will only offer validated versions of software. And as such, man should not expect to always see the latest versions available. However, I am now wondering, is it better, security-wise, to stick to the 'validated' 3.0.4 or to go use the original 3.0.7? Because as all the holes of 3.0.4/5/6 are now known, I am not quite sure that sticking to 3.0.4 is for the best.
Now it came to my mind that the philosophy might simply be to use APT to get the latest valid version, and then to simply use the internal upgrade tool of phpBB to upgrade to 3.0.7. But as the phpBB as it is available for Ubuntu is really modified, in terms of files being splitted in many different folders, will the automated upgrade work?
And what will happen when Ubuntu will upgrade their version? What happens if they upgrade to a lower than latest version? Or to the latest (not even sure this would happen one day)? phpBB has an integrated upgrade feature, but what about all this for a software that doesn't have such a tool (MediaWiki for instance)?
I did a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.1 i586. Everything worked fine. Then I used YaST2 Software Management to add a package. Worked fine. Then I did the Online Update to get the Installation up to date. Worked fine so far. I had to restart the Machine because of the Kernel Bugfix Update. Since then, the YaST2 Software Management is not working any more.
When I do start it, it starts the software manager, shows the "Search Phrase" and so on but when I enter a word and press "RETURN" the software manager immediately closes and takes me back to the YaST2 start screen. No messages, no warnings, nothing. With zypper I am able to install software but no longer within YaST2.
No applications will show in my system tray anymore except the defaults. I've checked the entries and touching those had no effect. In fact, the programs I lost the icons too were in the entries, under "system tray settings" and so I set them to all always show. After doing so the applications actually disappeared from my entries entirelSome of my applications open up directly to the tray and I can't get to them at all anymore! They were all working previously until I moved my panels around.

I am using Opensuse 11.4 with KDE Version 4.7.1 and kernel 2.6.37.6-0.7-desktop on an Acer TravelMate 4200.I updated my system yesterday and since that update the default Application Launcher for KDE is not working, when you click on the launch icon you get the "Kickoff Application launcher" balloon dialog but nothing else happens. A sort of a work around for this issue is that I have found when the application launcher is switched to Classic Menu Style then the classic menu works without any problems. I would however like to use the default launcher and not the classic one as it has so much more functionality and is easier to use and navigate

This "An Application wants access to the keyring "default", but it is locked. Goes on and I've a few question about the procedure.
The first is how do I determine WHAT application wants access. Seems to me that I need to know what is going on with programs trying to log in.
If I knew what program is needing access, I could determine if I wanted to provide permanent, temporary, or no access.

Dual boot sys with ubuntu lucid lynx 10.04 on Windows 7 host.I created a dot directory (.rams) yesterday and decided to do a chmod on it. Stupidly,(you can call me a moron) I used the asterisk as a shortcut notation and in effect chmod-ed all the dirs starting with a dot. So when I tried to login, this AM,an error mesg appeared that advised me to change the permissions but I could not get into a console or the desktop. After trying several things on Windows, I simply moved the exisitng ubuntu install into another folder, ran uninstall and re-installed. But is there any way that I can access the sys to undo my stupidity? I have a ton of docs on this install.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am new to Red Hat Linux. The other day I downloaded some files from the internet. The download manager placed them in the Filesystem "tmp" folder.
I determined that one of the files was 330 megabytes and the other were about another 76 Megabytes.
When I attempt to view the folder, I get a dialog box asking if I want to cancel the operation. The folder does not open.
I tried copying the folder to the desktop and was able to do this and only five files appeared in the folder... none of my downloads appeared there.
Question:
1.- how do I view the contents of the folder?
2.- Can I fix this problem?
I have rebooted the server several times, no change in tmp file access.
I tried to delete folder, system will not allow this. I am experiencing a small problem, "fooling" with this folder sort of wipes out the desktop - eventually it is restored after I tell the system to restart the Nautilus.
By the way I downloaded the files on another machine.
I upgraded to version 11.4 and now I can not install any application. Not YAST or zypper downloaded RPMs.Firefox and Konqueror can not download links that are rpm. I do not understand what happens. Ties other than rpm, if fully discharged. I tried as root and nothing.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWednesday I went to work, docked and fired up my older Dell C840 laptop (running Fedora 12). It had a long list of updates that it downloaded and installed (it had been off for about a week). When the updates were finished, I noticed that my laptop had locked up. After waiting a while, I ended up doing a cold reboot. After that, I get the Fedora symbol that fills up, and then the screen goes black with a single cursor. You can type in anything and it is reflected- even control and ALT codes. If you hit CTL- ALT-F2, it goes into a terminal mode. You can do almost anything that you'd normally do in terminal mode. The video driver is the original off the install disk, and it's never been changed- it works fine right out of the box.
If I try to start up X-Windows, I get a segmentation fault error. I've tried deleting and then re-installing some of the packages that were updated (trying this via yum), no difference. I don't know what else to do. I need to get this laptop going before next week- it's my work computer and I do use it a lot. Is there any way to get in touch with the people who wrote the updates, and file a bug report? I'm using my main (home) system right now, that for a couple of reasons needs to stay on windoze XP for a few more weeks. I've been around computers for years, but not Linux.
I followed some badly-spelled online instructions to get rid of the last panel (because I'm using Avant Window Navigator instead), which had me do this: Ok some people realize that the gnome panel in ubuntu is very annoying and if your like me you dont want it there anymore, so you wnat to get rid of it (only suggested if you have something like AWN ), ok first push alt+f2, then in that type gconf-editor inside of it. Now in that a box should apear. Click on apps, thenGnome, then session, then required sessions. Then there should be a file called gnome -panel right click it then choose edit, then make it empty. then save it press ctrl+alt+delete, then it should not be there but if it is run killallgnome-panel, and to run it again type in gnome-panel. I did it, and now I cannot startup. ( I just get a 'busy' cursor on a blank screen.)
