I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:
- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....
Trying to print from my laptop to friends wireless printer. I see his printer "7600 Series" in Network - File Browser. How do I print to his printer. I have text document. I click on "Print", but only "Print to file comes up".

The last complete update failed on one package (Cups Common - 1.0 mb), each time I login the update is offered via update manager and each time it fails with this message:

I'm not sure how it happened but recently when trying to print to a previously added printer, the printer does not show up. Most options are grayed out and clicking troubleshooter tells you that CUPS is not started. Latest guide I could find is for Ubuntu 9.04, options for restarting cups in 10.4 are slightly different (see below) To restart cups from terminal window in Ubuntu 10.4:sudo /etc/init.d/cups restartI looks like in Ubuntu 9.04 the command was /etc/init.d/cupsys restart. This should show the printer and open up the grayed out menu options, allowing you to print normally again.

I've been running Slackware 13.37 since RC1 (so I'm a relatively new Slacker!). I set up CUPS to start as a default service during my install process. I print once in a while, but my computer is not a print-server per se. Do I have to have it auto-started in order to just be able to print on-demand (like, from LibreOffice or Okular)?

I tried to make one myself, but since the .x86 file has the same name for every server, it is hard to know a way to check if the server is running with the right process.

View 5 Replies View RelatedInstalled the latest updates on 10.10 and the update froze during cups. So after leaving a couple of hours while did something else I had to abort the updates.
This of course borked the updater so had to use the command sudo dpkg --configure -a
Then I tried sudo apt-get install -f
Which again broke at trying to install cups.
I then tried a forced uninstall but this complained about missing dependences. I corrected those but it still hangs on removing cups.
If you try an re-install the same the problem hangs.
I have telnet service intalled(apt-get install telnetd), but when I type telnet, I'm getting the following error:
bash: /usr/bin/telnet: No such file or directory
My printer no longer prints anything with exception to the TestPrint page.Any other job I give it, it says is "completed" in the queue, though nothing has printed. Installed cups again, after a complete removal. No change. Heres what troubleshooting gave me:

View 1 Replies View Relatedall the tutorials i found for ushare and mediatomb shows it installed on desktop and not server. it also requires an account to be logged in. once logged it, you have to run a command to start it up. some questions.
1) is there a way to run either one w/o having to log into an account? so if say i restarted the server, it'll run the programs w/o me having to log in.
2) i would like to specify a directory to share music and movies. is one better than the other? clients that i plan to use are songbird, itunes (maybe), and vlc - maybe xbox 360 and ps3. other client suggestions?
3) other dlna server suggestions? this will be running on ubuntu 10 or 11 desktop or server. but the main thing i'm looking for is what i mentioned in #1.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a print server on Debian Lenny. This dedicated server is connected to an USB printer (Epson Stylus Office BX300f).
I've successfully installed cups and the guttenprint drivers from the repositories but then realized that I needed to upgrade the printer drivers if I wanted to get support for my USB printer. Thus, I built and installed the latest version of Guttenprint (5.2.6) from the sources but this procedure has not added any new driver (ppd files) into cups. I've read that cups-genppd and cups-genppdupdate must be used in order to generate the necessary ppd files and update them into the cups folders.
Well, I can find cups-genppd.5.0 and cups-genppdupdate.5.0 in /usr/sbin but I wonder if these binaries are related to the old drivers (gutenprint 5.0.2) and not to the new ones (gutenprint 5.2.6).
Anyway, I'm a bit messed with this stuff. I've read the man pages but there are very few examples explaining how to upgrade drivers in cups.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been away from Linux for years (about 10), I used to use it for everything and anything...now I am about to do it again but I need help getting back into it haha. Screen is broken on newish laptop, going to use it for firewall, router, file server, etc. Trying to setup remote desktop. I got Fedora 14 setup and installed on it, got SSH up and running where I can remote into it easily. Setting up VNC is starting to be a pain though.
I have Windows 7 on my other machine, with TightVNC and tried Tiger VNC also, disabled all firewall, on the same LAN. The service is running on the RH box, I just cant connect to it...am I missing something simple? It just times out. I followed [URL] thread for the most part.

In the many months I've had this account on this box, and as a result of the many minor mods I've made to the account, I've somehow bollixed something in the account setup which interferes with the startup of the service. I created a new account on the system, and the sound service icon displays properly, so I know it's not a system problem. Both the new, bare account and my personal account are in the audio group. As a work-around, I have an icon for gnome-volume-control on my top panel, which works pretty well.
What is the proper way to make the smb and nmb services start (and keep running) automatically? I have successfully configured samba on my F15 box, but sometimes the other boxes cant see it. I check the status of smb and nmb and smb is running and active, but nmb status is "Running (exited)". If I manually restart nmb then nmb status changes to "Running (active)" and the problem goes away. However I want it to start (and keep running) automatically as it should. I am thinking maybe the problem is the way I set smb and nmb to start automatically.

$chkconfig smb on
and
$chkconfig nmb on
Is this the correct way? if not, what is it? Maybe I need to be more specific about at which runlevels I want the services to start? I have googled, but found about 5 diferent methods to make this services start automatically, some with systemctrl, some editing files, chkconfig, and even the system-config-services app (which seems broken in f15 btw) and don't know which one to use.
