Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Use Apt-get To Install Uninstall Fix Anything?
Mar 7, 2010
My problem started with DVDrip and I mad an apt-on-cd DVD and installed from there rather than download the packages for my twop systems running karmic. I don't know what has happened but now if I try to install/upgrade/remove anything i get the following.
Code:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libevent-execflow-perl: Depends: libanyevent-perl but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
I installed ubuntu by using Wubi to try it out. When I restatered and booted up ubuntu it said claimed to be finishing up installations which was taking nearly 1.5 hours of getting nowhere before I got frustrated and shut it off. I wen't back on windows to see if a re installation would be better. But my computer didn't seem to agree on that and wouldn't uninstall it. So I manually deleted the files myself. Now when I start up my computer I still see the choice to boot up kubuntu but yet there is no kubuntu if I select it. Any ideas how to get rid of the selection and why wubi didn't work? Not even live CD's are working on my computer.
I have developed a simple tool to easily uninstall any Ubuntu (or other Linux distro) from an Ubuntu live-CD.It works very well for any Linux installed on a separate partition. Now I am wondering if it is possible to add it the possibility to uninstall a Wubi installation. For the moment, I know how to detect a Wubi install (just need to detect a /ubuntu/disks/root.disk file). Then, all tutos I found use Windows tools, but this "How do I manually uninstall Wubi?" paragraph gives clues to do it from a live-CD :- Remove C:ubuntu and C:wubildr* : ok- remove Ubuntu from the Windows bootloader : do you know how to do this from a live-CD for Vista and Seven ?- remove Ubuntu from the registry : do you know how to do this from a live-CD
When I try to remove Evolution Mail in the Software Center it just thinks and never begins to uninstall. When I try to force remove from Terminal it says: "Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?"
I have looked everywhere I know of, being a new Linux user, trying to find where the process may still be running or being used from and I do not know where to go from here.
About 3-4 years ago I installed a new harddrive in my computer (XP Pro) and moved the old system disk drive to be secondary. I installed Grub and partitioned it in half. I installed Fedora on one partition and installed XP on the other. Now I want to keep the XP and replace the Fedora with another Linux like Ubuntu or Mint to try them out. I am not sure what I need to do to replace the Fedora and keep XP. Could someone give some idea how this would be done? I don't remember exactly how I did it at the time or what tools I had used or what I will need.
Installed Debian Lenny on a Pentium 3 with 256 MB of ram and a 10GB hard drive. Used the "Expert Graphical" from the install menu. I did not choose any software packages when prompted from the list (the list with the checkboxes next to server, desktop ECT) because I wanted to choose individual packages to install afterwards. Had no issues, computer rebooted and I got to a login prompt.
Logged in as root, I ran "apt-get install" and installed gedit, blackbox from my main window manager, gdm, iceweasel and synaptic (some of these I installed after editing the sources.list file with more repositories.)
All of this is great, even though this computer is old.. I have a nice box to do internet browsing and IRC.
Here is what I do not understand, and I have never seen before in Linux. When I try to install Open Office, synaptic package manager says it "needs to uninstall iceweasel" browser and a few other files and programs. Also this happens if I try to install VLC player. Looks like the reasoning is because some applications are not compatible with others. Is this new? Again, I have never seen this before in Linux.
I cannot uninstall Firefox, nor can I uninstall Chromium; one always stays if the other is uninstalled. For example, if I remove Firefox, Chromium will appear in its place and vice versa. This has got to be one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen on Ubuntu! So, how can I uninstall both web browsers?
I am trying to uninstall my LAMP server and my Drupal 7 installation. Unfortunately I cannot find any instructions on uninstalling Druapl from my system. The ones that exist are far too old( < 2008 ) to be relevant. Could someone please direct me how to go about this? Note: I did not use Synaptic for installation. I downloaded the file from the drupal.org site.
Ok, so I tried to run the .deb package to install the Facebook chat plugin for Pidgin, and something got all messed up with that, and now nothing will install or uninstall. Synaptics won't run, Update Manager tells me to try a termianl command that doesn't work, and the Software center doesn't work either. I've attached screenshots of the problems. I've tried to download and reinstall the .deb file, and it still doesn't work.
I wanted to upload one more picture, but it only allows five. The last picture was of the terminal window. Here's what it said.
"Sudo apt-get install f reading package lists... done building dependency tree reading state information... done E: The package pidgin-facebookchat needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it"
Im new to ubuntu so i may not understand some answers so please bare with me. For a university thing i needed to run java so i installed sun java 6.0. I got an error half way though so i thought nothing of it and went off to do other things. Now when i try and install or uninstall anything i get this message
The package system is broken If you are using third party repositories then disable them, since they are a common source of problems. Now run the following command in a terminal: apt-get install -f
I was trying out things, many different scenarios, many uninstalls, and yestarday just ran janitor ? now I don't have panels, some buttons missing, but many are still here (but unistalled earlier). I would like to make a cleanup in applications/ the button graphics are "blanks" but their name is still there, and who know what else might be conflicting in the background. any useful commands for check-and-clean-and-or-restore?

I currently have Ubuntu running on my dads computer, but came to the conclusion, not to mention his complaining, that Ubuntu isn't for him. Instead, I read up on Kubuntu and thought it was perfect!
I already know that I can download Kubuntu through the Ubuntu software center, but I want to do a complete clean install with Kubuntu. So far, I have made a cd for Kubuntu, but can't get the cd to pick up when I boot my pc, so that I may install it.
How can I install Kubuntu for his computer and remove Ubuntu?
I installed Linux since I really enjoy the OS, alot more fun than Windows, but the problem is that I cant play any game when I'm bored. So I'm going to install Windows and then install Linux alongside again,
But to do that I need to uninstall Ubuntu, so my question is, how do I do that? I tried to just boot from the Windows CD, but after a while it says that it cant proceed caused by an error that says that my CD/DVD-Rom or my USB is failing or that is isin't connected, cant really remember. But my DVD-rom works perfectly when not running the Windows-CD.
Is this problem caused by that my HDD got EXT4 instead of NTFS?
I have a toshiba laptop which came with vista as default os..but 6 months back i started ecountering hell of problems that forced me 2 switch to ubuntu..though i liked it my dad cant run half of his business cd's...not even in vmware,wine...so now i need to help in getting windows xp installed..i have ubuntu live cd and the installation cd for xp..but i cant find the right technique..i read thru a few sites wer d wrote abut using gparted from the live cd n i tried it out but it was in vain..now i dont have any os on my harddrive..d message that i get when i insert the xp cd is that it cannot find any hard drives despite i having divided it into 4 parts: ntfs, fat32, unallocated.
I recently installed Deluge 1.2.9 so that my brother might be able to use his Droid to control torrents remotely. Immediately thereafter, I began experiencing problems with installing and uninstalling any software I attempted to install or uninstall. The problem seems to be an inability to do something (not sure what) with my kernel. Here's the output from the last installation I attempted (Deluge 1.1.9 from Add/Remove Applications)
ok so i have a clevo x8100 laptop with two 5780's in crossfire. Im not exactly sure where to check in linux but i remember im using the fglrx drivers...which from what i understand are the crappy "safe" drivers. I've downloaded the latest linux x64 drivers for the card...
do i need to uninstall the old drivers first before i attempt to install the new one? also, if i do need to uninstall the old one, do i need to disable all my compiz special effects too? I could just see that creating a problem. im afraid im ruining my ubuntu install now that i've got everything configured the way i want minus the video drivers.
I got bored with Ubuntu pretty quick, and now just want something that works fast on my netbook, so I want to uninstall Ubuntu and replace it with Linux Mint xfce I was wondering if there was a way I could do that directly? I should add that my netbook is currently dual booting win7 starter and Ubuntu 10.10 netbook edition
I can't install or uninstall packages using apt nor synaptic. when i try to install something, dpkg hangs on the unpacking stage. it will also tell me that file lists are missing from packages when i try to uninstall them. or it will tell me it cannot find an archive for various packages. dpkg --configure -a # does not work,
How can I either fix or uninstall a broken Firefox 3.6.9 install. The install gets all the way through until it syops at "setting up firefox: Setting up firefox (3.6.9~hg20100817r34537+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd2~lucid) ... then it stops forever and now I can't find or install any updates at all. It tells me to fix by running: sudo dpkg --configure -a and around and around we go!
I use to have windows and opensuse 11.4 with dual booting with no issues at all I have installed ubuntu and now I want to get rid of it, but the boot and grub are from the ubutnu Is there any way to do a clean uninstall and do not loose the dual boot I had before?
