Ubuntu / Apple :: Other G4 Users Noticed That Suspend Now Works?

Mar 2, 2010

I havnt, intentionally, addressed this issue (not for initial want of trying), but after having given the matter up for some time, today i closed the lid and was expecting it to go to blank screen, but no it went into suspend (despite not being instructed to do so in power management), crikey i thought here comes a forced shut down and a dicey boot, but lo she woke After an initial second of smeared-up graphics and the sound of the hard disk starting to spin twice in a row, she woke.

On closing the lid again it went to blank screen, a fluke i thought, so i changed the options to suspend when lid closed in power management and tried again, and it worked, again, and again and again. Any other ppc users noticed that suspend now suddenly works?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Lucid - MBP 5,2 Doesn't Suspend With Lid Close?

May 1, 2010

When I close the lid on my Macbook Pro 5,2 running Ubuntu 10.04 nothing happens.. it doesn't turn off the screen, suspend, hibernate or anything. Everything that i've looked at says to change the setting in power management but there's no option there for what to do when the lid closes. I've also checked out gconf-editor and the setting appear to be right in that... so I don't know what the issue could be.

Fedora :: S3 Suspend/Resume Works In Other Distro, But F12 Hangs?

I have a new, fully updated installation of F12 which won't resume from suspend (to RAM) on my hardware. I also have the Ubuntu Karmic Live CD which does suspend/resume perfectly on the same box. So, I'd like to try and find out what Ubuntu is doing to make it work and configure my F12 to do the same.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suspend To Disk Works But Does Not Power Off (11.2)

Mar 3, 2010

My system does not power off completely after I trigger the "suspend to disk" function. The monitor gets blank and the usb-mouse does not light anymore, but the power led is still on and the pc fans can be heared. Interestingly, neither pressing the power button nor the reset button starts the pc in this state. I have to unplug the electrical power and then press the power button. After that, the system resumes nicely from the hibernation state as it should. I know that the hardware itself is capable of powering off because it worked perfectly before with opensuse 10.2, and I didn't change any bios settings either. I tried the option acpi=force, but to no avail.

Ubuntu / Apple :: What OS Actually Works Out The Box With A G4 PPC - Any Recommendations

Apr 19, 2010

having no luck with 9.10 i am wondering what linux is recommended that actually works? ie no internet problems with videos etc. ie recognising cd and dvd and playing them back. ie a cd/dvd drawer that opens and waits until it's told to close instead of chomping discs. ie no colour issues. ie better than 800+600 resolution without having to stick a new graphics card in place of the stock card? etc etc, ie something that works and means i don't have to buy a new apple os. this is the machine i have running, apple power macintosh g4 450 dp (gigabit) [url]

Ubuntu / Apple :: No Users Set Up ... Can't Log In

Aug 13, 2010

I installed ubuntu on a G3 iBook using this guide: [URL] (because its a slow a** laptop).
I'm almost certain that it never ever prompted me to set up a username or password. I'm almost certain because I've installed linux on a good number of different systems and I use the same exact username and password every time.

But I was kind of shocked when it prompted me for a login and password and I'm thinking to myself "uhhhhh.... I didn't set up a user yet...". So I tried my usual login and nope... "Login incorrect". I can't do anything because I'm not logged in... and I can't use recovery mode either because its PPC or because its a Mac so there is no GRUB.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Software Not Available For PPC Users?

Jan 9, 2011

I've been a Linux user for some time. I was originally a Debian user & had switched from Debian to Ubuntu around Breezy Badger. I recently acquired a PowerBook G4, Its an amazing machine and I can see why Apple users are Apple users. Its been alot of fun familiarizing myself with OSX but I dual booted with the latest release of Ubuntu so I could also feel at home. After installing Ubuntu 10.10 I started installing software, I couldnt find appmenu-gtk anywhere. So I searched google for about an hour to find no answers.

So is it that appmenu is not available for PPC edition of Ubuntu? Why is this? & Will we ever see it for PPC?

If this is the case, what other software isnt available for PPC?

This is a clean install, with no changes made to the system. I then ran all the waiting updates and am still experiencing this problem.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Cross-system Users And Permissions?

Oct 24, 2010

I just finished installing Lucid Lynx on an iMac7,1. I would like to still be able to access my Mac Documents directory from within Ubuntu, so I can have a common directory that both systems can access. Right now, however, I am unable to do that. It looks like it might be a permissions issue- ie I am a different 'user' on both systems, so I don't have access to my Mac files. Is there a way to have the same 'user' account for both systems? If not, could a common 'group' be created in both systems that both of my 'user' accounts have access to?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Share The Same Shared Folder Between Multiple Users?

Aug 13, 2010

I'm using a Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 32-bit machine as my file server. It is sharing a few folders stored on a USB NTFS drive using Netatalk. The client machine is running MacOS 10.6.4. I have only one user on the Ubuntu machine, but the Mac machine has two users. I wish to share the same network share between the two Mac users, while both are logged in (they switch between one another without logging the other one out).

I created a login item on both Mac user accounts to automount the Ubuntu shared folder and used the same Ubuntu user account for authentication on both Mac accounts. This is the problem: When the first Mac user logs in, the shared folder automatically mounts with no problems. However, when the second user switches to their account (without logging out the first user) the automount mounts the folder with a red "No Access" sign on the folder. The only way to resolve it is to eject the mount and manually remount.

This is not the end of the world, but I would like to resolve this issue if possible, so that the users get a smoother experience. The way I tried to resolve this: I thought that maybe Netatalk does not allow the same user to connect more than once from the same IP, so I set up an additional user on the Ubuntu machine. when I connect to the Ubuntu server using the new user for authentication, the only share available for the user is their home folder. The other shares are not available.

I therefore tried to configure permissions using the AppleVolumes.default by explicitly giving all users the "allow" permission for all shares and restarting the Netatalk service, however the new user still has access to nothing but their home folder. How can I share the same shared folder between multiple users?

Ubuntu Security :: Users With Different Firewall - Works Best With Separate Installations?

Mar 5, 2011

Just to confirm - I have come to the conclusion that it is best to have separate Ubuntu installations if users of the same computer have different default firewall blocking needs. Me and my wife have totally different Internet surfing habits. I also tend to block most of the websites that she normally uses, some of which are dialed by default when opening Firefox.

We have used one desktop computer for a while now with two users in one Ubuntu installation. It is becoming too much of a hassle having to change the firewall settings each time it was changed by the other user with a previous log-on. We also have two other computers in the household for the children. I have created a Local Repository, and download updates only on my computer, saving on time and bandwidth (the only replication that takes place is downloading the index files from the update servers for each computer). Having another Ubuntu installation on the same computer will just add to the "auto update" list.

Another advantage is that my "more secure" Ubuntu partition (which may contain sensitive information from time to time) will not be mounted when my wife is on the Internet.

Server :: Can't Make Vsftp Works On Ubuntu - Users Can't Login

Feb 20, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server and i need to use an ftp server. I installed vsftp but i can't make it to work. What doesn't work is that can't login to the ftp server with my user(s).I created a user ("AddressBookUser") that should access to some files located on "/var/www/fpt/rubriche/". I set this folder as his home.Here is the row for this user in /etc/passwd:

Quote:

AddressBookUser:x:1001:1002::/var/www/ftp/rubriche:/bin/false

This user is member of the group "rubriche_ro" (and no other groups).This is my /etc/vsftp.conf:

Quote:

listen=YES
#listen_ipv6=YES
#
anonymous_enable=YES

[code]...

vsftpd.chroot_list exists, but as you see above the chroot_list_file directive is disabled.When i try to connect to the FTP server the connections is established but after i insert "AddressBookUser" as user name and confirm i get a "530 permission denied" message. This occurs both from the network (LAN) computers and locally:

Quote:

webs@webs:/etc$ ftp localhost
Connected to localhost.
220 Welcome to WEBS FTP service!

[code]...

I can't figure out what is the problem but my thought was that it's a problem related to the user configuration rather than vsftp configuration, but it's only my supposition. If i try to login with the "main" user of my Ubuntu server, "webs" i can login correctly.

Debian Hardware :: ALSA - Noticed Some Sort Of Crackling In Audio

Mar 9, 2011

I am having a really annoying problem here. Every time when I use my Computer while listening to music, or watching a video, I get some sort of crackling in my Audio. For example, playing a mp3 with Rhythmbox (or Banshee or Totem, doesn't matter really) while browsing the web is just horrible, every time I scroll down the page (Mouse wheel or keyboard) I get that noise. Just listening to the music while not touching the Computer works just fine. It does not seem to be CPU related, my reason being: I can max out my CPU, rendering a 3D graphic and still have crystal clear sound, but browsing down some big file-folder at the same time will distort my audio.

The same goes with games which are a bit on the high CPU side, like Nexuiz with high graphic settings: No sound problems at all. I am using my on-board sound, which lspci lists as VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controller) (rev 10), pure ALSA setup, no pulse/esd or anything of the like installed. Switched to unstable to see if a more up2date kernel or updated alsa would do the trick, it didn't! I am running Debian Unstable - 2.6.37-2-amd64 kernel, Gnome-Desktop. Here's what I did to make my sound work in the first place, since my squeeze didn't recognize my sound-setup out of the box:

To make my onboard sound system-wide default I created /etc/asound.conf:
# Modified as per [URL]
pcm.!default {
type hw
card VT82xx }
