Server :: Can't Make Vsftp Works On Ubuntu - Users Can't Login

I have an Ubuntu 9.10 server and i need to use an ftp server. I installed vsftp but i can't make it to work. What doesn't work is that can't login to the ftp server with my user(s).I created a user ("AddressBookUser") that should access to some files located on "/var/www/fpt/rubriche/". I set this folder as his home.Here is the row for this user in /etc/passwd:

vsftpd.chroot_list exists, but as you see above the chroot_list_file directive is disabled.When i try to connect to the FTP server the connections is established but after i insert "AddressBookUser" as user name and confirm i get a "530 permission denied" message. This occurs both from the network (LAN) computers and locally:

I can't figure out what is the problem but my thought was that it's a problem related to the user configuration rather than vsftp configuration, but it's only my supposition. If i try to login with the "main" user of my Ubuntu server, "webs" i can login correctly.

I've setup a Lamp Server for Testing, The Lamp Server is Up & Running on CentOs 5.5
I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]
So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error
I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(
Also the root directory where the web pages are served from is called public_html here are the permissions
Here is my vsftp.conf file can someone check it to see if i made any errors in there:

I have a vsftp server running, and we have problems sporadically where people (not the person who uploaded the file) cannot delete files uploaded from OSX machines. We never have this problem with files uploaded by PCs. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I should check? The users uploading the files all belong to the same group. Also, I think if you log in to the FTP server with another OSX machine, it will let you delete them. I'm looking at the folders now, they have drwxrwxr-x. When i try to delete them from a PC, it gives me a 550 Remove directory operation failed.

I`am just trying to connect Samba with ldap to make it simpler for the users to log in. We have already attached squid, so by that we thought it would be easy to do the same with samba. I think we did something wrong with the ldap config for the os with is btw:

When I have different people log into our ftp and browse to the same folder, some people see the files inside, some don't. all the user accounts are in the same group, which has permission to this folder. but the one user who can see the files is the owner. how can i fix it so everyone in that group who's the owner of the folder can see the files?

I see no errors in my auth.log, and in my vsftpd.log I see Tue Feb 1 13:01:13 2011 [pid 2] CONNECT: Client "<omitted_ip>" Tue Feb 1 13:01:20 2011 [pid 1] [<username>] OK LOGIN: Client "<omitted_ip>" so it looks like the user is able to log in, but I can't tell what the issue is beyond that.

I run a CentOS 5.1 using VMServer on XP. From home I can successfully 'cvs login' to my CVS server. But starting 'cvs update', the connection times out.
Netstat shows the connection as established:
# netstat -an | grep 2401
tcp 0 0 192.168.1.35:58651 85.25.xx.xx:2401 ESTABLISHED
CVS server is domain managed with dnsalias service (dyndns.org)
Using the same computer at work (other ISP) I have no problems - cvs update works just fine.
Can I assume that it is not a port/firewall issue, since "cvs login" is successful? Any clues where to start diggin'?

So I've configured ldap on Centos5 64 bit and I can run "ldap search" and "gentent passwd" on the client/server and it shows my users info.
But I can't login via the cli or GUI.
I can login by doing;
su - username
at the client or server but I can't login by issuing;
login username
or at the GUI login screen.

I'm trying adjust my proftpd server's settings, that anonymous users could download what they need smoothly.
A small problem made me so bemused:
In the configuration file of proftpd, I place the following setting section in the <anonymous> section,

After restarting the proftpd server and applying the configuration, I try downloading a file in IE browser. Sometimes, it prompts a saveas dialog, and everything was okay.
However, it occasionally prompts a login form instead of a SaveAs dialog. This makes our customers confused greatly.
So, how could I prevent browser from prompting login form when anonymous users try to download files from our ftp server?

I am trying to deploy Kerberos and LDAP so users will be able to login in to a server on the edge of the LAN, and afterwards be able to establish a SSH connection to all the computers in that LAN without the need to type any passwords, and without the need for me to manage SSH keys [beside the SSH keys on the login server] and local user accounts.
1. When i create the users in OpenLDAP i use a template that i created by reading documentation from the Internet. In the template one piece of information that is neede is the UID. Is there any clever way the keep track of the numbers so i do not assign the same UID to two users, besides using a pen and paper?
2. For the users to be able to establish SSH connections between the computers, the host is going to be added to the keytab like this: ktadd host/client.example.com Is is possible to replace client with something genric so i do not need to mange these keytab files between the hosts?
3. Users will be logging on the the server on the edge of LAN by using SSH keys. How can i configure the setup so the users will recieve a ticket automatically when the logon without executing kinit and without entering a password, just by having a valid SSH key?
4. krb5kdc is running on all the network interfaces in the server i want it to only run on eth1, how can this be done?

i have a NIS master server and 4 NIS clients. out of 4 nis clients two are acting as login servers ie users will login and do all their stuffs and the remaining two are application servers. But sometimes users login into applications servers and started doing all their developer's job. i want to allow only a limited number of users tointo this application users not all the users who are all part of the nis domain.all the systems are running RHEL 5.4 on hp's proliant x86_64 based servers. I need to setup a way for our Web Developer to login to this particular server to manage the webpages that are hosted. He prefers to use his ftp client/fireftp since he connects to all other servers that way. I can connect via local network but can not seem to connect from my home computer. We have a firebox firewall and we opened port 21. Do we need to open any other ports or just port 21?

I just setup a vsftpd server and I am baffled about one issue. I allow local login and have not chroot anybody and disallow anonymous login. When connected as a local user I can browse the servers file system including the root (/) directory. There I can download whatever file I want but not write to it.All permissions are untouched since installing the server.Looking at the file permissions they are in general rwxr-xr-x (root root)
Isn't this a security threat? If so it seems strange as these are the default permissions. I don't dare changing the permissions for the entire file system.

I've installed vsftp as ftp server on CentOS5. vsftpd.conf is unedited, works without change as it was installed (it's a private network on which I'm using anonymous ftp.)For some reason vsftp will not serve some files which I downloaded from another system (using ftp.) The downloaded files simply don't show up at all if I come into vsftp via a browser, for example, and 'get' fails in a command-line ftp client. Other files originating from the local machine are served OK.
If I copy the downloaded file, vsftp shows the copy just fine but not the original; both files are in /var/ftp (the ftp server root.)The downloaded file had group and owner as '65534' so I did chgrp/chown root, but that made no difference. Reboot makes no difference; restarting the client or using a different client machine makes no difference.What am I missing or doing wrong? What doesn't vsftpd like about the downloaded files? This is happening on two separate machines, and I'm very puzzled.

I installed 10.04 on my pc. I also have 9.08 and XP installed. Both work. The 10.04 gui login screen displays and asks for the password. I enter the password. The screen goes blank but after a few seconds the gui login box re appears and again asks for a login. I rebooted into the TTY, created a new user, checked the new user was in in /etc/passwd and that I could get into the new user's account. When I rebooted into the gui the new user was there and I entered the password but again I just got back to the gui login window. The pc I am using is at least 5 years old. I have tried startx and I do get the gui background but no controls are displayed. I am using 32 bit 10.04. Using the TTY I have uploaded all the current fixes.
