Ubuntu Security :: Php5-mhash - Packages And Noticed The Description Is Incorrect
Aug 9, 2011
I am auditing an Amazon EC2 instance I've set up for security before deploying it. I started to run an install process and saw php5-mhash as one of the packages to install. I tried to find out more about this packages and noticed the description is incorrect: [url]
How can I get Zypper to show the full description of packages rather than a truncated summary? When I use zypper to list installed packages or search for packages from the command line I would like to see the full detailed description of the packages that are returned in the results. Currently zypper only shows me a truncated summary description.
I hoped to use php-5.2 while keeping close the the centos packages (no external repositories). So I tried the packages from http://dev.centos.org/centos/5/testing/i386/RPMS/ .These packages seem to be compiled without mime-magic support (--without-mime-magic).The previous stable php-5.1.6 packages had this mime-magic support enabled.
I'd like to use PHP5.2x instead of PHP5.3x on my Ubuntu 10.04. There is a small bug in Drupal where tweaking Views causes an error which seems to be associated with php5.3.
Just like the title says, if I were to try to run anything through gksu and accidentally put in an incorrect password, instead of the gksu window coming up again, it would just terminate.
I have SELinux set to permissive and am getting lots of errors because the contexts are incorrect after a filesystem relabel. e.g.
Code:
[root@fileserver2 var]# ls -alZ /data/serverlogs/messages -rw-------. root root system_u:object_r:default_t:s0 /data/serverlogs/messages
I believe that this file should be var_log_t.How can I restore the correct context to all of the files in /var/log?I've tried running:
Code:
restorecon -vR /var/log/
But this does not change the contexts, I guess because the files are now in the 'incorrect' location. I've looked through the file: /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/files/file_contexts which I believe contains the original/default settings - maybe I need to alter this file to fix the problem? I've also tried modifying /data/serverlogs using:
Code:
semanage fcontext -a -t var_log_t /data/serverlogs
which fixes the directory itself, but not the contents,
I havnt, intentionally, addressed this issue (not for initial want of trying), but after having given the matter up for some time, today i closed the lid and was expecting it to go to blank screen, but no it went into suspend (despite not being instructed to do so in power management), crikey i thought here comes a forced shut down and a dicey boot, but lo she woke After an initial second of smeared-up graphics and the sound of the hard disk starting to spin twice in a row, she woke.
On closing the lid again it went to blank screen, a fluke i thought, so i changed the options to suspend when lid closed in power management and tried again, and it worked, again, and again and again. Any other ppc users noticed that suspend now suddenly works?
I was looking around the files in /etc/ to see what they were and what they said, then I noticed there was two files called passwd, which confused me a lot for a second then I noticed one of them was actually passwd-.I compared them and they only differed by one line: < games:36:35:added by portage for gemrb:/usr/games:/bin/bash, which was in passwd but not passwd-.Should these files both exist? If yes, why, what does having both do? If no, then its safe to say I can just delete passwd-
i got a RHEL 5.2 machine.and i noticed that the total used memory(as shown in "free" command) is 3GB higher thanthe sum of RSS size of all processes(collected using "ps aux").i know that its not suppose to be exact because RSS counts ultiple times shared memory (so actually it suppose to be higher than the used memory).the server runs apache which runs a pretty heavy php program.my suspicion is that its memory leak?
I have grown to like SeaMonkey on another distro. But did not see it in Debian synaptic. However searching the net I noticed Debian has Iceape, internet suite in synapticwhich as far as I can tell is a twin of SeaMonkey. So if you are looking for a complete package email etc. this is a good one. Opera is as good or better but I like to run two browsers some times when playing music or a game.
I'm testing out 10.04 on one of my partitions, and I love it. I have been using it exclusively for a while now, I have not logged into Windows since! Really don't care about windows anymore! However, yesterday I went to boot into windows... and I noticed the option to choose it is missing from my list! Maybe I'm just not getting to the correct list? The list I get shows like 5 different modes and versions of Ubuntu and something called Windows Recovery (which does nothing), but that's it.
I am having a really annoying problem here. Every time when I use my Computer while listening to music, or watching a video, I get some sort of crackling in my Audio. For example, playing a mp3 with Rhythmbox (or Banshee or Totem, doesn't matter really) while browsing the web is just horrible, every time I scroll down the page (Mouse wheel or keyboard) I get that noise. Just listening to the music while not touching the Computer works just fine. It does not seem to be CPU related, my reason being: I can max out my CPU, rendering a 3D graphic and still have crystal clear sound, but browsing down some big file-folder at the same time will distort my audio.
The same goes with games which are a bit on the high CPU side, like Nexuiz with high graphic settings: No sound problems at all. I am using my on-board sound, which lspci lists as VIA Technologies, Inc. VT1708/A [Azalia HDAC] (VIA High Definition Audio Controller) (rev 10), pure ALSA setup, no pulse/esd or anything of the like installed. Switched to unstable to see if a more up2date kernel or updated alsa would do the trick, it didn't! I am running Debian Unstable - 2.6.37-2-amd64 kernel, Gnome-Desktop. Here's what I did to make my sound work in the first place, since my squeeze didn't recognize my sound-setup out of the box:
To make my onboard sound system-wide default I created /etc/asound.conf: # Modified as per [URL] pcm.!default { type hw card VT82xx } ctl.!default { type hw card VT82xx } .....
I got a new motherboard since my last one failed and this one has a Realtek RTL8168D/8111D PCI-E Gigabit on-board NIC. I noticed when I attempted to load Wheezy on her, she complained about the drivers not be listed in the Debian kernel. Is there a way I can slip in the drivers via USB or some other method so I can do a netinst of Debian on this new system?
When I firsts installed Ubuntu 10.04, and tried to hook it up to my wireless network it noticed my connection and accepted my password, but did not connect. My wireless card doesn't have linux drivers installed. I found the correct drivers, but I am unsure of the correct way to install them in Windows so they work in Ubuntu. I am currently dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I just did a new install on a pc chips p23g motherboard based machine. This motherboard has a built in 10/100 connector. When installing I noticed that the connection flashed orange for a bit and then returned to simply flashing slow. Its my understanding that if you have a green steady light and a flashing orange then there IS a connect. If this is true then, for some reason the install didn't find it or didn't install a driver for it. I installed 2 times just to make sure.Oh, when installing, off the dvd (10.4) it said there was a problem but it would give me a desktop so that I could figure it out.I am clueless. There was a box to install and that is what I have been using. Obviously, I am missing something here
way of updating only the security packages on CentOS?
If I do a yum update. It updates everything and creates a new version which will unnecessarily uses space along with the old version. I don't want this to happen. way of updating only the security packages and keeping my old version of CentOS?
Today I ran aptitude update && aptitude safe-upgrade Like I regularly do, and I see these two packages need to be upgraded: login passwd
Since these packages seem kinda security-sensitive I would like to know exactly why I would need to upgrade them. I checked Debian's security list but couldn't find anything relevant, and the links to the changelog for both packages are broken: The requested URL /changelogs/pool/main/s/shadow/shadow_4.1.4.2+svn3283-2+squeeze1/changelog was not found on this server. Where can I see what is changed in these packages so I can safely upgrade?
there's this process on my system monitor that opens and closes by itself it does not have a description or a name and makes my hard drive spin like hell
I have a microphone that I connected via USB. When I do dmesg it shows [37830.040274] usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4 How do I find out what /dev/??? identifier has been associated with the device? I want to record something using XVidCap and need to set the microphone for it to work.
Back in the days of slow machines, displaying the package description during an install provided for some reading to break up the boredom (if one was inspired to sit there and watch it do the install). Now days, the descriptions just fly by, several a second most of the time (unless doing things manually). Do we really need this anymore? It's unreadable.
I'd rather see a list of packages being installed scroll by, one package name per line (with size info). Even that might get hard to read during the buzz of small packages being installed causing rapid scrolls.
Installed Truecrypt onto openSUSE 11.3 (KDE) and noticed that Truecrypt needed to be started as root.Modified visudo using YAST asusername ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/truecryptHowever, when copying files from my backup drive into the Truecrypt partition, there is an access problem (couldn't remember actual error message)In Konsole , updated visudo to username ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/truecrypt Copying is allowed and working fine.Question:1. What is the difference between the above two visudo setting?2. How to updated visudo to the second setting in YAST?3. How to change the editor for visudo in konsole using nano instead of vi?
What the right place to report errors in package descriptions ? There are more than two dozens categories mentioned on the openSUSE "reporting a bug" web page but none of them seem to fit. The packager of the concerned rpm is bugs.opensuse.org, no email printed out when launching rpm -qpi <package name>.
How can I know what number descriptor is used by my usb device indicate via libusb_device_handle structure ? I can't find declaration of libusb_device_handle structure. I need this information to use poll() function where I need decripttion number of device.
