Fedora :: DVD Drawer Won't Stay Open?

Apr 12, 2010

I just installed FC12 (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64) alongside Windows7 on a brand new box, and the DVD drive is driving me nuts. In FC, I can't get the DVD drawer to stay open. When I press the eject button, r slides out, but then slides right back in again immediately. When I start the SystemTools->DiskUtility (Palimpsest), the Eject function is grayed out.The drive itself seems to work just fine, I used it for the FC install from LiveCD. In Windows, the drawer works properly. The only device info I can see for the drive is DH16AAL, I don't know if that's a model no. and I don't know the manuf. Says SCSI, but it's got a SATA cable. The rest of the box is:

I am trying to create a script that takes a network resource off the network, and opens it in nautilus to recover files. Everything is working fine, except for the nautilus part. Nautilus opens just fine, but the script opens it and does not go on, even when nautilus is closed. when running another terminal instance with nautilus in it, when nautilus is closed, the extra terminal just sits there.

Ubuntu :: Emerald Themes Don't Stay After Terminal Is Closed?

Jun 10, 2010

I have instaled compiz fusion and emerald. I understand through research that there is a bug in Emerald that requires the use of terminal to activate a new theme specifically typing the following text at the command line: emerald --replace.

When I do this the theme changes. However when I close the terminal it reverts back to the gnome default theme. What do I need to do to keep the Emerald theme changes. Previously I added the following to the start preferences: fusion-icon --no-start

OpenSUSE :: Configure Always Stay On And Leave Connection Open?

Aug 24, 2011

I'm using Opensuse on a small computer that needs to run a web site 24/7/365. It's an mp3 player, it's used for music, the player is an html5 player that runs in fullscreen mode of firefox. It's connected to a TV via HDMI. I've set all possible power options so it never sleed, idle, hibernate or close. Same thing for display, never dim or turn on screen saver. Although the TV is not ALWAYS on the PC's HDMI input, sometime switching to TV Tuner and other time to PC display. So if we switch the tv's input to tuner and the to PC, opensuse won't re-detect the display and the TV will say NO SIGNAL until I completely reboot the PC ... very annoying ... The other problem is that the TV is far from the server so I need to use VNC and re-open firefox, go to the player and re-set fullscreen mode. But worst, I can only use VNC once. If I want to reconnect via VNC, I need to login SSH, restart service and then I can connect ...1. How can we set VNC to ALWAYS accept connection and that from a fresh boot ?

General :: How Long Do FIFOs - Named Pipes - Stay "open" For

Aug 2, 2011

For example, I have a script that writes the time to a pipe in /etc/pipe. It writes continuously in a while true loop. How long will the data in the pipe be available for reading? If I only decide to read the pipe a day later with cat /etc/pipe, will I get all the time values right from the time I started writing?

Conversely, what if my loop only wrote the time every 10 minutes. Will I be able to access everything a day later?

Finally, pretend my loop writes the time continuously (like my first example) and I read the pipe every 30 minutes. If my computer shuts down right before I read the pipe, will the pipe be empty when I reboot or will it hold all that data?

Ubuntu :: How To Change Terminal App For Nautilus-open-terminal

Dec 1, 2010

I've fallen in love with Terminator as a replacement for the standard gnome-terminal app.

However, I'm also very much in the habit of using the nautilus-open-terminal extension for launching new terminal sessions.

I'd like nautilus-open-terminal to launch Terminator rather than gnome-terminal.

A quick search of my system and the web didn't reveal anything. i didn't find a gconf setting to control this. A quick look at the source code didn't help much either.

Fedora :: Delete Key In Terminal / Screen?

Mar 7, 2011

How can I get the delete key to work "properly" in a console in Fedora 14? In most Linux's I use, the delete key acts as a 'forward delete', so it deletes the character right under the cursor. This is the same behavior as in any modern GUI application. But in my fedora box when I use the delete key it inserts a tilde.s happens in Gnome's terminal application, and also in a TTY console. If I run screen the behavior gets really strange, and it seems to change the capitalization of the character under the cursor, andterferes with subsequent keystrokes. I've tried a couple of things for screen,ke executing "TERM=screen screen" (really bizarre results) and putting "termcapinfo xterm-color kD=E[3~" in my ~/.screenrc, which didn't seem to do anything useful.

Ubuntu :: Create A Command That Will Open Terminal And Keep It Open?

Jul 30, 2010

I have a problem that I can't seem to figure out. I can easily create a .sh file that will execute a command in Terminal, but as soon as it executes the terminal disappears. How do I get it to stay? My idea is to have the keyboard shortcut "ctrl+alt+del" open a .sh file with the contents "ps ax". Then it would be just like having a task manager; the terminal would open with "ps ax" already executed, and all I would have to do is kill the process number.

Ubuntu :: Can't Turn On Terminal Bell In Gnome-terminal Using Remote Screen Session With Irssi

Nov 6, 2010

I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.

My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.

My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.

I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc

And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.

No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.

I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.

General :: Launch A Terminal By Clicking On The Terminal Icon At The Top Of The Screen

Apr 22, 2010

I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.

1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel?
2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts
3) Enter: regina fv2

I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.

Fedora :: Unable To Open Login Screen

Oct 14, 2009

I clean-installed Fedora 11 and everything was running well. I wanted to try Bacula backup program and so I installed the Development package in other to compile Bacula. When I finished the installation, I discovered a bunch of foreign language supports had been installed. I just erased them. While doing so, I must have also erased some other files.

When I rebooted, the bootup process went well until just before the login screen. The screen showed the Fedora logo, f, and got stock there. I was able to login remotely from another local network computer via vncviewer. I found that GNOME dsktop was missing. I logged on to Fedora 11 text mode by issuing CTL+ATL+F3 and did 'yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" By remote login from another computer, I determined that the GNOME Desktop had been restored. But the Fedora 11 still stil stuck just before the login screen. What do you think is missing? What do I need to reinstall?
