when i click on the terminal icon , it opens up for a split second but then closes right away . I've tried alt+F2 and clicked on run in terminal but still same problem. how can i fix this ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI updated my Jessie system today. Nothing crucial in the apt-get list as far as I can see, perhaps it's unrelated. Anyway, now I cannot open the terminal any longer. Launching `gnome-terminal` shows the app name in the menu bar, a spinning wheel, and then after a few seconds nothing. It doesn't appear in the list of processes, either. I can still log into the text shell via ctrl-alt-F1.
I also added `LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8"` to `/etc/environment` to get rid of the American date format. Could it be the cause? I just tried to launch the terminal from the JVM. I get this output:

After a cleaning of some software from my ubuntu (Jaunty) desktop I am no longer able to open a terminal window in Gnome.I tried to reinstall gnome terminal from synaptic but this made no difference...In the command line that you get with Alt-F2 I tried the code: man ls
and a terminal window opens but after exiting the man page (q) it disappears!
I am trying to create a script that takes a network resource off the network, and opens it in nautilus to recover files. Everything is working fine, except for the nautilus part. Nautilus opens just fine, but the script opens it and does not go on, even when nautilus is closed. when running another terminal instance with nautilus in it, when nautilus is closed, the extra terminal just sits there.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed FC12 (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64) alongside Windows7 on a brand new box, and the DVD drive is driving me nuts. In FC, I can't get the DVD drawer to stay open. When I press the eject button, r slides out, but then slides right back in again immediately. When I start the SystemTools->DiskUtility (Palimpsest), the Eject function is grayed out.The drive itself seems to work just fine, I used it for the FC install from LiveCD. In Windows, the drawer works properly.The only device info I can see for the drive is DH16AAL, I don't know if that's a model no. and I don't know the manuf. Says SCSI, but it's got a SATA cable. It's an mp3 player, it's used for music, the player is an html5 player that runs in fullscreen mode of firefox.It's connected to a TV via HDMI. I've set all possible power options so it never sleed, idle, hibernate or close. Same thing for display, never dim or turn on screen saver. Although the TV is not ALWAYS on the PC's HDMI input, sometime switching to TV Tuner and other time to PC display.So if we switch the tv's input to tuner and the to PC, opensuse won't re-detect the display and the TV will say NO SIGNAL until I completely reboot the PC ... very annoying ... The other problem is that the TV is far from the server so I need to use VNC and re-open firefox, go to the player and re-set fullscreen mode. But worst, I can only use VNC once. If I want to reconnect via VNC, I need to login SSH, restart service and then I can connect ...1. How can we set VNC to ALWAYS accept connection and that from a fresh boot ?

I'll add an app, and after reboot (sometimes a couple) something or all are missing. If I try to add say Chrome back to it, I'll then have two of them. I've googled and LQ'd around to see up there a way to update the Gnome menus, which I found a few but nothing works
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is something that I started to notice in F12 and it appears to be the case as well in F13. Any changes that I make to my desktop wallpaper in Gnome don't stay in effect after a reboot. Any ideas as to what is going on here? I don't mind the default blue swirly thing in F13, but I at least want the style change from scale to center to stick.
Choosing the 'set as default' option doesn't seem to help either, as that changes the screen you see at the Gnome login. Once I log into my account the default desktop wallpaper is still there.

View 4 Replies View RelatedLinux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"
In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.
P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!
I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.
I've fallen in love with Terminator as a replacement for the standard gnome-terminal app.
However, I'm also very much in the habit of using the nautilus-open-terminal extension for launching new terminal sessions.
I'd like nautilus-open-terminal to launch Terminator rather than gnome-terminal.
A quick search of my system and the web didn't reveal anything. i didn't find a gconf setting to control this. A quick look at the source code didn't help much either.
I have a problem that I can't seem to figure out. I can easily create a .sh file that will execute a command in Terminal, but as soon as it executes the terminal disappears. How do I get it to stay? My idea is to have the keyboard shortcut "ctrl+alt+del" open a .sh file with the contents "ps ax". Then it would be just like having a task manager; the terminal would open with "ps ax" already executed, and all I would have to do is kill the process number.

How long will the data in the pipe be available for reading? If I only decide to read the pipe a day later with cat /etc/pipe, will I get all the time values right from the time I started writing?
Conversely, what if my loop only wrote the time every 10 minutes. Will I be able to access everything a day later?
Finally, pretend my loop writes the time continuously (like my first example) and I read the pipe every 30 minutes. If my computer shuts down right before I read the pipe, will the pipe be empty when I reboot or will it hold all that data?
gnome-terminal from the Debian squeeze does not use the 'default_size_columns' and 'default_size_rows' from the /apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/ folder of gconf.

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
I'm running CentOS 5.4 on i386 machine with 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5Whenever I login into Gnome, a gnome-termial window comes up. Instantly title says root@localhost before settling with user@localhost with current directory as ~/Downloads. Only happens with my particular user account (normal user), not with root as I tried. I also have KDE, Xfce, Fluxbox as other option at login, but terminal only shows up when I log into Gnome (not kde, xfce or fluxbox)I've done and

Nothing there.
