Slackware :: Cdrecord And Some Of Its Warnings

Nov 4, 2010

kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0 cdrecord 2.01

Code:

This is the command line I used to run cdrecord. Afterwards, I ran 'cdrecord -media-info' on the same disc and, as a result, I got the messages contained in the file I am adjoining. There, two consecutive warnings can be seen, which I quote:

Quote:

The disk, after recording, however, is both readable by GNU/linux and another O.S. What is the meaning of those warnings and what are its possible implications? I would like to know.

Slackware :: DVD Reader / Burner - Tray Stayed Closed For 8 - 10 Seconds

Aug 19, 2010

I am experiencing a problem with the DVD reader/burner... At first, I would come up to my office and noticed that the DVD tray was opened... Strange because I never use it and did not remembered to have used it. When it happened, I simply closed the dvd tray and I was all set (until the next time). This issue occurred several times within the last month... Today, it happened again, but this time, I close the tray, it stayed closed for 8-10 seconds and reopens by itself again! It happened 5 o 6 times in a row until 5 minutes ago, I closed the tray and it stayed closed...

Fedora :: What Is The Cdrecord Original Fork Status

Feb 10, 2010

I realize the information found here is potentially biased, but it made me curious where Fedora stands. Now that even Debian has agreed to distribute the original fork of Cdrtools, is Fedora considering that option? Several other distros are distributing the original fork now, and it's where active development is ongoing.

OpenSUSE :: Cdrecord Has No Permission To Open The Device?

Jan 7, 2010

Still getting the "cdrecord has no permission to open the device" error when trying to burn an iso image to a DVD-RW.

I did yet another clean install of openSUSE 11.2 64 on my desktop computer, did updates, added Nvidia and Packman repos (it's not a repo problem as I tried it several times on a totally clean install), added codecs and stuff as advised by caf.

I updated the DVD drive firmware earlier today.

My user is a member of ALL groups.

Drive is an LG GH22NSS50 (sata)

It all works (with the same DVD-RW) under winxp on the same machine.

Is it HAL or something else that blocks permission to devices?

I'm really getting sick to death of this problem, and would be happy just to get rid of anything blocking permissions to the DVD drive.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: K3b Burning - Cdrecord Has No Permission To Open The Device

Dec 14, 2010

I was trying to burn an .iso with K3b a little while ago, and had some problems. First of all, even though I chose 8x to burn my (16x) DVD, it switched to 11x or 12x around halfway through the burning process. There were also some ticking noises that I'm pretty sure were coming from the DVD writer, not terribly loud, but noticeable. This had never happened before. Finally, it got stuck at about 98% (but not frozen, as the time elapsed kept going), and did not finish burning--got an error message (and a bad disc): "cdrecord has no permission to open the device"

I inspected the disc and there was one dark spot (on the dye) about halfway through the disc, very thin and couple of millimeters long. (This was present only after burning). I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, K3b version 1.91.0, Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S

I have just installed zend server ce php 5.3, and I am having trouble getting it to work. When I log in to the admin interface, it told me it couldn't start the webserver, so I go to restart apache, and it gives me this:* Starting web server apache2 Syntax error on line 6 of /etc/apache2/sitesenabled/zendserver_gui.conf:Invalid command 'php_admin_flag', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configurationThis has to do with php_mod some how... but I am not sure how to fix this, or where to start, since I am relatively new to actually setting up apache.I thought this might have something to do with libapache2-mod-php... so I went to reinstall it, and ran this:

Fedora Installation :: Error, Saying I Had Bad Sector(s) The Error Told Me To Run Chkdsk /f /r In Windows, Then I Could Run Ntfsresize With -b, (in Linux)

Feb 22, 2009

I have the DVD installer of Fedora 10, i want to dual boot with windows vista. well i get up to the partitioning part of installation (in anconda) and it asks me how i want to partition it... i wanted to re size my partition and create the default format, so i keyd in 70GB and Okay. then it came up with an error, saying I had bad sector(s) The error told me to run chkdsk /f /r in windows, then i could run ntfsresize with -b, (in Linux) well i did all those steps, and shrunk /dev/sda1 to 70gb (/dev/sda2 is my recovery partition) i have a 140 gb hard drive, but can't find the unallocated space anywhere!

when i booted windows, it ran a chksdk, like it should, and in my computer it said that it had been shrunk (because the pie graph showed a capacity of around 70GB) When i go into windows disk management it says no unallocated space, just one big partition (and a 8gb recovery partition) this is the same with GParted on puppy linux, GParted on fedora 10 (live cd) says there is no drives I can mount or unmount and same error on partition logic... in EASUS partition manager i get told that there is no unallocated space, in the fedora installer there is only /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Does anybody know.. how to install fedora on this partition, or get rid of the partition and repartition it another way. when i click on the option to remove all linux partitions and create default format, it errors and says it cannot make another primary partition, then says there is no room for /boot. and i can not proceed.

Slackware :: How Do I Specify Root Disk In Lilo

Jun 13, 2010

With the continued growth of SATA devices, I have really been having problems with my boot loader. In the old days, it was pretty easy to make sure that the IDE devices stayed put. However, now everything is an sd device. Specifying a root directory of /dev/sda1 in lilo is no longer a sure thing. If you have a USB device plugged in or an ESATA device, your sd devices are no longer guaranteed to stay put.In reading through the lilo documentation, it appears that you can specify root devices by UUID or even by LABEL.

Slackware :: Tries To Start Ubuntu In Another Disk?

I've got a fresh Slackware 13 install in a sata disk. I am trying to backup data from another sata disk which has Ubuntu 9.04 (or 9.10, not quite sure). Lilo starts, boots ok but for some strange reason it finishes trying to start gnome from Ubuntu, it even says that the "nvidia card is going to run with low config" and freezes there. Fstab in Slackware is set with UUID values, bios and everything points to this disk, even inittab is set with runlevel 3... Why is this happening?? Any idea? Why Slackware mounts the second disk as root and grabs its fstab?

Slackware :: Getting The Volume Serial Number Of A Disk?

As you can see, the first command gives numbers like C841-0655. But for the optical disks (iso9660) it gives them not. Neither does the second one. This number is known as 'Volume serial number' in MS-DOS, and is printed on console with the command 'dir' not only for the HDD partitions but for the optical disks too. how to get an optical disk Volume serial number? Fedora :: Type "sudo Gedit" (before Trying "su") But Was Told Wasn't In Sudoers?

Dec 8, 2010

I've been a distro-hopper for a while and just installed FC14. I like it and it seems very stable on my older Presario laptop (2170us with 1-Gig Memory and 80-gig HDD).In other distros, I was able to open a Terminal, type "su" & <password> then type "gedit" and take care of things like the Workgroup name in Samba, adding a user to sudoers, etc.....but in FC14's Terminal, typing "su" & <password> and then "gedit" results in all kinds of error messages (that I can't recall right now). I did find after typing "su" & <password>, that if I then typed "sudo gedit", gedit opens just fine.I had tried to type "sudo gedit" (before trying "su") but was told I wasn't in sudoers.I suppose it's minor for someone like me who can eventually find a way around it...but why won't gedit open when I'm a superuser by just typing "gedit"?
