Feb 28, 2010I was given an old Compaq Presario computer; it had a 3.2GB hard drive with windoze 98 (put your crucifixes down, please) and a somewhat broken CD drive. I replaced the CD with a spare DVD ROM and the hard drive was replaced with a spare 250GB. I also removed the old ISA Fax/modem and installed a PCI network card. On top of this I also burned a copy of Xubuntu 8.04 on my main PC, for loading onto the old timer.
But then I came to use the old machine, the BIOS recognised the new DVD ROM, but no menu appeared, just the word "COMPAQ", any attempt to access the BIOS met with no response, (would not respond to "Del" or "Esc" or any of the "F" keys) the PC then attempts to boot from the hard drive (it had an old version of, what I think may be Ubuntu, as it comes up with a GRUB error 1!
I did notice the DVD ROM drive's light flash during the boot sequence. how to access the BIOS?It would be a shame for me to throw this old PC out! (I could always salvage the parts, I have 2 other motherboards and cases ready to make up some more computers, making 5 computers in my network)

Apr 2, 2010i have managed to install ubuntu onto the USB and everything is working fine but the problem i am having is that i can't seem to access the bios on the netbook so i can't boot from the USB.i managed to get acess to the root files using this guide:url...all i need to do is figure out how to get access to the Bios so i can change the settings so it boots from USB.

Apr 30, 2011So I installed Ubuntu 8.04 with Wubi a while ago on my Toshiba Satellite A500/02j and recently uninstalled it (with Wubi). For whatever reason, Windows will not get rid of its bootloader and I cannot access my BIOS settings. I've tried spamming every function key that I have when it boots up but nothing happens (if I press ESCAPE when I'm at the boot menu it restarts). Any idea on how to get rid of it and get me my bios back?

Mar 25, 2010I have an old computer, it came with Windows 98, later I updated it with Windows XP. XP ran slowly because of it's outdated hardware. Around this time I already had a new computer. I decided to install Ubuntu on it to muck around with. However, Ubuntu also runs slowly and I have a dual-booting computer. However, when I try to get into the BIOS of the computer and run the 98 disk, I can hit every button and BIOS will not load. Question: How do I reinstall Windows if I can't access the BIOS?

Jun 7, 2010Im trying to test out Ubuntu while running Windows currently, once i got the ISO image installed into my USB device by following the steps on the Ubunto site, i rebooted my PC and tried to get into BIOS to change the setting to boot through the USB device.
but i was unable to open BIOS.
this is all i saw in the bottom right side of my screen as far as commands to open some thing before my PC would boot through my Cdrive and load Windows.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - Black Screen No Grub / Cannot Access BIOS Menu
Jun 28, 2010I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 (using Update Manager) in an attempt to get to 10.04. Installation and upgrade seemed to go OK until reboot. Now I only get a black screen - I don't see the grub menu, I don't even see any way to access the BIOS menu- not even a blinking cursor. I can hear it start and I can see the numlocks key go on. Ctrl-Alt-PrtScrn-B does not reboot (nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace- but I didn't expect that would) Surprisingly Ctrl-Alt-Del does (or at least it sounds like it does) reboot the system. I do have a NVIDIA cards and after reading around I suspect that this is likely the problem but I have no idea what to do now..
Here's what I've attempted:
I figured since I wanted to get to 10.04 anyway and this was so troublesome I could just go do a fresh install with a Live CD or USB to 10.04. However, even with a live CD or USB I still just get a blank screen.
Continually holding down F2 (and other function keys to try to access Bios)
Holding down Shift while booting
Esc while booting
Moving the monitor to the VGA port (as opposed to the NVIDIA card).
Other information...
Previously I had tried to upgrade to 9.10, but ran into problems with it not recognizing my RAID, so I just found it easier to go back to 9.04. (So although this is likely a graphics problem I guess the possibility is that now it doesn't even see my boot drive- although- if that was the case, I'd assume I wouldn't have the same problems from the CD or USB boot.) My ultimate goal is to get this to 10.04, if I could do it with an upgrade instead of a fresh install I'd prefer that, but at this point just getting back to a functioning computer would be ideal. I see many options in other posts for how to get back once you can access a command line- but since I can't even see that, I'm not sure what to do now.

Feb 19, 2010When i boot my spare machine i am not able to access the bios or use the arrow keys in the Grub2 menu with a usb keyboard.However,once Debian boots i am able to use the usb keyboard and mouse normally.The strange thing is if i attach a Ps/2 keyboard i can access the bios and Grub2 without problems.With the Ps/2 keyboard attached i entered the bios and checked the settings regarding usb and the following options are enabled:

May 4, 2010I have installed 10.04 on my MacBook Pro 6,2, and am trying to access some files stored in my User directory on the OS X partition of the laptop. I get a permission-denied error, but I figured this was a similar issue to the one mentioned in the stickied "How to Install Ubuntu 9.04 on Intel-Based Macs" thread.However, the suggest fix,Code:sudo usermod -u 501 -g 20 richarddoesn't exactly work for me. I tried this, but found myself suddenly logged out of my main account. On the log-in screen, only my second account showed up. Luckily, I was able to log into that, and re-usermod my main account back to it's original userid number.I am guessing that my strange error had to do with the abnormal (for ubuntu, at least) userid?

Oct 24, 2010I just finished installing Lucid Lynx on an iMac7,1. So far, everything looks good, except for the fact that I am unable to access my external firewire drive. I know that outside of the Mac world, firewire isn't seen very often, but I was under the impression that it was supported. It doesn't show up in the /mnt directory of my new system, or my desktop. Then again, I am new to Ubuntu, and the filesystem looks a bit different from Mac and Debian, the two other *nix filesystems that I am the most familiar with. It shows up fine in Snow Leopard.

Jan 22, 2010I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.
I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).

May 2, 2010Recently my laptop broke down and wont start up. I'm currently trying to recover my files to my mac with an IDE to USB cable. It recognized my windows partition fine and I was able to get all my files off of that, but the majority of my stuff is on the ext4 partition that I have on it. Does anyone know how to access the ubuntu partition of this hard drive from my mac?

Apr 22, 2010This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;
When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.
Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

Feb 1, 2010I had a thread about installing on a Mac and decided to go the VirtualBox route and everything is running splendidly EXCEPT for the fnmode setting in /sys/module/hid_apple.
The problem is that the directory hid_apple does not exist for me to modify the settings for the apple keyboard. I'm assuming that when installing in VB, Ubu assumed it was a PC. Anyone know of a way to get the keyboard config directories in there so I don't have to hit Fn to do Alt-F2? Also, I tried to create the directory (sudo mkdir) and it returned "Cannot create directory...no such file or directory", but not in so many words.

Mar 14, 2011I've had a Apple Powerbook G4 for a while now, but being mostly a Windows user I've never used it. I remember when it ran it's native OSX (Which I can't for the life remember) Probably Tiger? Anyways... I tried installing Ubuntu on it about a year and a half ago, the installation was botched and I left it sitting there with no purpose in life. :O
So I've decided to dust the laptop and give it another go. I've progressed a little further with my Linux experience, having installed and tested a few distros and even switching over to Ubuntu 9.10 for about 4 months. Enough of my life story and more to the point.Has anyone installed Ubuntu, or any distro for that matter on the Apple Powerbook G4? I know there are different versions of the G4 and I'm not entirely sure what my version is, It's the 1.6Ghz version with The Nvidia card (Err I think) and extra Wireless card installed. I am not very capable with Mac - After checking Apples website I believe it's the 15inch.
I've read the FAQ thread and will begin trying to install Ubuntu tonight at home, I just wanted some suggestion and some pointers in the right direction. What distro would be most suitable for my hardware? and What is easiest to set up?
Ubuntu :: Can't Get To BIOS
Jun 13, 2010I'm trying to do a test run of 10.04 LTS with a cd but the machine isn't booting from the cd ( or two other subsequent cds that I know work). I thought I remembered not having to do anything to make this boot from a cd, so either something has changed or I've flipped out. Once it boots 9.04 from the hard drive it recognizes that there is a program cd in there though. I've tried F8, F10, F12 and ESC - ESC nets me a list of drives to start from Ubuntu 9.04 and several versions of recovery mode also a command line. I'm baffled - this is probably something simple but its beyond me at this point.

Sep 29, 2010I have a Dell XPS 600, and absolutely no working OS is installed on the machine. By that, I mean I have WinXP, but there's some error and when I run a normal boot it loads Windows Setup, but it "encounters" an error. Not that I care, I just want Ubuntu. So basically, I need to setup Ubuntu without first running an operating system. But my BIOS won't load it- I press F12 at startup and select "boot from onboard CD drive" but then it tells me that there's nothing to startup from, and I get stuck pressing F2 to retry. Btw, I used the regular 10.04 disk download, not the live CD.
