Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Change BIOS Settings Due To Which Can"t Change Boot Preference?

Mar 24, 2011

I currently have a Windows XP OS which i want to dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 . I put the disk in the drive and chose the option to install Linux through Windows. But it hangs in the middle. I am also unable to change my BIOS settings due to which i can"t change my boot preference. My first Boot is the HDD. I want to change it to CD-ROM. Any suggestion? I also have another PC where i can boot through the CD...I tried installing there by booting from the CD but i get this error message after seeing the purple Linux screen with the loading dots. Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Enable Wireless NIC In BIOS - Keeps Being Reset / Fix It?

Jan 22, 2010

I have an Eee PC 701 4G, and some time ago I disabled its wireless NIC in the BIOS to save energy. Now I've come to need it working again, but I can't re-enable it, because it always goes back to being disabled after I boot the eeebuntu installed on the machine. If I just enable it in the BIOS, reboot and go into the BIOS setup again, it's still enabled, but if I let the OS load it'll get disabled. I'm really at a loss here, how do I find out what's wrong? Could it be Ubuntu that does this?

Hardware :: ACPI / APM Setting In BIOS - Cannot Boot

Feb 11, 2010

I recently put together a new machine with Ubuntu 9.10 I couldn't boot it even live (or any live distro for that). It wound up being either a ACPI or APM setting in the BIOS that got it to boot, I say either because I spent probably 10 hours in there turning things on and off until it worked. It was about 4am so my memory of it ain't that great. TO get up to date, I was adding a HDD and having some issues with it being detected right. So back in the BIOS I was and accidentally loaded the defaults! Now I can't figure out what I did last time I've been at it for hours with no luck.

If I jump into grub b4 it boots and add the acpi=off the system boots up but with the side effects of no pwr mgmt. I need it to be able to sleep and shut itself off. I've always had good luck with Ubuntu in other machines so I'm not that great in there, and honestly don't know the difference between apm/acpi. The MOBO is an ASUS P4C800 Deluxe, AMI Bios. I'm gunna keep at it in the mean time, if by any chance I figure it out I'll post what it was (after I write it down).

Fedora Installation :: BIOS Setting - Building New Server?

Jan 31, 2009

While building my new server I grinded ta hold shortly after inserting the FDR10 DVD.

Hardware:
Chenbro es34069
Albatron KI690-AM2
AMD Athlon X2 64 4850E
IDE 2.5" HD (master)
IDE Slimline DVD (slave)
4x SATA II swap (still empty)

It stops at the message "net: Registered protocol family 2" but in one of my desperate attempts I changed almost every setting in my BIOS (updated to 1.07) and all of a sudden it passed on. Stupid enough I figured it would be a small effort to find the setting and figure out the problem, so I changed them one at a time after loading the defaults....

Hardware :: BIOS Setting Prevents Boot With PCI RAID Bus Card?

Mar 23, 2009

I changed something in the BIOS which causes a kernel panic, if my card is installed (Ultra ATA/133 PCI-to-ATA Host Controller). I had it working fine til a month ago, when I installed some Linux on a HD on that card. That booted fine too, and I did some disk switching. Still all was well, but yesterday I tried to boot XP (2nd IDE master)(GRUB is Ubuntu/2nd IDE slave), and XP wouldn't load. I clicked here, and clicked there, and now XP and Ubuntu boot, ONLY if the RAIDbus card is Out. Put the card in, and I get a kernel panic/lockup. This HAS to be a BIOS function - nothing is different on the disks, including GRUB menu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From BIOS Or From Live CD 'first Hard Drive'?

May 8, 2011

If an old bios and mainboard is being used, such that it cannot handle the large size of HD, then is it useful to say use a live CD and from its initial menu (pressed a key), choose 'Boot From First Hard Disk'? Would this be similar in getting around a bios and disk size limitation I wonder - like - does the use of a live CD in this way avoid using the bios to point to the active partition??

The reason for asking is that a friend has a couple of quality old rack mounted server machines and wants to use Ubuntu having now fitted 80 GB empty drives. Live CD seems ok, and 11.04 install goes ok but on boot up grub comes back with an error.

I recall that early machines cannot see larger(?) HDs for booting purposes even though installs go ok in very large HDs. I wondered if a live CD to boot up temporarily - trouble shooting - would be worth trying for this reason, or am I way off?

Ubuntu Installation :: Presario: How To Access The BIOS

Feb 28, 2010

I was given an old Compaq Presario computer; it had a 3.2GB hard drive with windoze 98 (put your crucifixes down, please) and a somewhat broken CD drive. I replaced the CD with a spare DVD ROM and the hard drive was replaced with a spare 250GB. I also removed the old ISA Fax/modem and installed a PCI network card. On top of this I also burned a copy of Xubuntu 8.04 on my main PC, for loading onto the old timer.

But then I came to use the old machine, the BIOS recognised the new DVD ROM, but no menu appeared, just the word "COMPAQ", any attempt to access the BIOS met with no response, (would not respond to "Del" or "Esc" or any of the "F" keys) the PC then attempts to boot from the hard drive (it had an old version of, what I think may be Ubuntu, as it comes up with a GRUB error 1!

I did notice the DVD ROM drive's light flash during the boot sequence. how to access the BIOS?It would be a shame for me to throw this old PC out! (I could always salvage the parts, I have 2 other motherboards and cases ready to make up some more computers, making 5 computers in my network)
