Ubuntu :: Change The Default Paths For Pictures, Documents, Music?
Jan 16, 2011
I am wondering how to change the default paths for Pictures, Documents, Music, etc to different paths (on a different partition within the same HDD). What's the cleanest way of going about this?

I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.
I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).

I want to connect a laptop running ubuntu 10.04 to a laptop running windows 7 via direct connection in order to transfer files like music, documents, pictures, etc. I have an ethernet cable that I thought I would need in order to do it. Is that even possible?? If so, how would I go about doing that?
Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I know I can transfer files with a flash drive and what not but I want to try to get this working.

I have this problem, however the solution given there is outdated- There is no such menu entry (I tried to see if it was disabled, but it wasn't in the menu editor either).
So how would I do this in Karmic?
Edit: I found it. As a reference: Open Nautilus, go to Edit-> Preferences -> "Media" tab -> Photos -> Your choice.

Anyway my actual problem is to change my pictures, download and music folders, since my files are in another HDD partition; I can make it with Ubuntu Tweak, but at the first reboot folders are resetted. Which is the problem? Does this application conflicts with another one (as "compiz fusion icon")?

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy all the pictures from various folders in my Documents to a single folder. So in Nautilus, I clicked on Places > Search for Files. Then chose the Documents folder and typed *.jpg in the search criteria. It found all of my pictures just fine. However it would not let me copy and paste them into a folder I put on my desktop. Copy is not on the "right" click menu and Ctrl C did not work for the highlighted search results. This is so simple in Windows but it does not seem to work in Ubuntu.

How can I change the mountpoint of my partition /media/documents to /documents.This is a partition of sdb and a fixed disk. The reason is that /media/ sometimes creates ghostdirectories while /Windows/C never does so, programmes writing/reading from this partition therfore don't work if a ghostdir_ exists.(BTW Suse is on sdb5 and sdb6. on sda is windows and used to be Ubuntu, the Suse-swap is sda5. Windows is out of use.)

I'm trying to set up my home server, which runs Fedora 12, to automatically backup user documents like pictures, music. I want it to make a new DVD or ISO image on, say, a weekly basis, and to only backup the files created since the last backup. I discovered mondoarchive, but I'm not sure if this is capable of doing that. Is there a tool that I can use to do this?

We have a collection of music for the entire family. Can each user's Music folder point (for lack of a better word) to the same physical directory? Can I do this with mounts, or is there a better way?

Trying to find a way to have the find command perform a search using multiple file extensions such as "find all pics" i.e. .jpg, .png, .gif, .raw etc. I would have thought something like the following would have worked, but apparently I'm doing something wrong:
sudo find / -type f -iname "*.jpg" "*.png" "*.gif" -printf
I'm guessing find simply doesn't support more than one "-name/-iname" at a time? Or perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way? I realize most times there's several different ways to skin a cat when a task is requested in linux/unix.

So my 10.10 computer died on me a few weeks ago, and I've just got a new 10.04 machine up and running. I'm trying to pull some files off of the 10.10's hard drive via external connection, but I've got no idea where to look. In addition to that, I'm being told that I don't have the permissions to access several areas of the drive (like the root folder).
Where should I look, and how do I get the permissions to look there?

After I reboot my Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS l machine my device paths change (even the boot drive) and this causes havoc on my two RAID5 arrays. The device paths change and causes a mismatch in my fstab and I have to manually mount both RAID arrays every time. It's quite frustrating and annoying and I would love for it to stop. This even happens for the boot path.
Example: my boot path is /dev/sde5 I reboot my machine and my boot path changes to /dev/sdm5
Why does this happen? And more importantly how can I stop it from happening so it stops messing with my RAIDs?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome as my desktop enviroment. I used Wubi to install from my laptop's default OS, Vista. I keep most of my media on the Windows partition, mostly for ease of use - such as streaming a movie through my xbox etc I would like to know if there is a way to edit the Gnome 'places' menu to have Music, Pictures etc direct to my /host/users equivalent.

I have a dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 I just started setting up - and know almost nothing about Linux - I have all my data on separate drives from my OS drives, and would like to "arrive" at my "My Documents" file when i choose "Documents" in Ubuntu.
The location of "My Documents" is - /media/New Volume/My Documents (which I found by dragging the folder onto the terminal) not quite sure how to put in the right command - something like ln -s /media/New Volume/My Documents ~Documents - (but that isn't right and didn't work).I also want to do the same with Music, Pictures and Videos.

Running Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows7 on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop. Everything works in Windows. Everything works in Ubuntu, except for 2 things.1) I can live with not being able to enable/disable wifi.) I cannot read photos from an SD card plugged into the laptops SD card reader. When I open the SD card in Ubuntu, I can see the file name, but the thumbnails show messed up pictures. Usually, the bottom half of the photo is solid green, and there are usually lines running through the photo, or it is divided into quadrants with one quadrant being ok, but the rest having the green and/or lines.I assume the driver for the card reader is not correct. Card reader works fine in Windows. So I have to reboot into windows, copy pictures from reader to a folder, then reboot into Ubuntu and I can see and open the photos just fine. Just cannot read and copy them from the card while in Ubuntu.

My compiler won't find <new>. Since it's such a basic function, I'm a bit confused. Is <new> supposed to be in a file of its own? Where do I find it? And if it turns out to be missing on my computer, where can I find a <new> one? Or do you see anything else that I do wrong?
After some trying out, it seems I can't find stuff like iostream or any other basic stuff either. The compiler is prolly looking for them at the wrong place. Does anyone know how I change or add paths for the compiler to look in when using the "<>" operator?

When I installed Lucid and first switched language/locale settings, a window popped up asking me if I wanted to change the name of the Documents, Music, Video etc folders into the new language.
Originally I was worried that this might be some irreversible operation and said no and ticked the don't ask me again box.
It seems though that this is just a cosmetic operation and I'd quite like to use this function now. Does anyone know where I can change the setting to accomplish this?
