Mar 29, 2011My Documents folder is empty when I click on places and then documents. I did discover though that when I click on places and then computer, a window pops up which has on the folders that are in Places. When I click on Documents through that window all of my docs are there.

Jun 20, 2010I want to connect a laptop running ubuntu 10.04 to a laptop running windows 7 via direct connection in order to transfer files like music, documents, pictures, etc. I have an ethernet cable that I thought I would need in order to do it. Is that even possible?? If so, how would I go about doing that?
Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I know I can transfer files with a flash drive and what not but I want to try to get this working.
Software :: Download Some Images From A Website - Single Column Of Links To The Images?
Jul 26, 2010I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

I've setup a second wireless router, dedicated to the MAC address of my laptop (debian) and using ssh I can view my email (thunderbird), but I'm not sure what to do to view woodworking videos without downloading. So, do I need to setup tunneling, do I need to view the windowmanager or is there an way to run videos? Anyway I've come along way using HOWTo's with breaking debian. Not sure how to proceed.
Note: The primary wireless router is from my ISP.

Dec 8, 2010I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy all the pictures from various folders in my Documents to a single folder. So in Nautilus, I clicked on Places > Search for Files. Then chose the Documents folder and typed *.jpg in the search criteria. It found all of my pictures just fine. However it would not let me copy and paste them into a folder I put on my desktop. Copy is not on the "right" click menu and Ctrl C did not work for the highlighted search results. This is so simple in Windows but it does not seem to work in Ubuntu.

Jul 6, 20101-When entering a music CD, video or files, any programs or music or video players and desktop are closed are removed all the icons and I can not open any program only on firefox, I can not see the files or anything . (NOTE CD-rom is in mint condition)
2-I graphics effects ruin the entire desktop and when it is in fact no graphic still looks bad everything looks pixelated or striped like when flex is damaged or something is damaged and is in perfect condition.
Now I'm going with the version 10.04 of ubuntu:
1-I have the same problem with the CD I had in 9.10, except that in the 10/04 I can open some programs with the Emphaty and monitor systems.
2-When you close the laptop when I open the screen looks as if the flex embers damaged or broken screen (when it is of course) and I have no other to reset it.
3-When you drive about 30 minutes using computed with any open programs (Firefox, Emphaty, emesene, movie player, Gnome player) to close it or minimize it gets super slow and sometimes if I Friza and then to turn it off and repeat history.
4-When I'm watching a movie or a video with movie player is super slow (just what I'm playing does not the OS) as if Lageado and stuff. But with Gnome looks pretty good player just the video looks very small and I can not put it full screen. Certainly in a Dell Latitude C610 Pentium III-Processor: 1000/700mhz-Memory: 512MB Graphics-Card: 16mb.

Mar 5, 2011When I try to access my personal folder Music by clicking Places>Music I get the Appearance Manager instead, actually if I click on Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, or Downloads the only thing that appears is the Appearance Manager. I cannot find out why this is happening it happened before and I reinstalled Ubuntu, now it has happened again is there any other way to access those folders besides through Places.

Jan 22, 2010I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.
I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).
Fedora :: Music /Video Always In Fast Forward Mode On Kde?
Sep 1, 2010I can play mp3, ..... etc. fine on gnome. However on kde, they always play at 3x or 4x speed. In fact, they just run through, not producing any sound. I can see the video zipping past on ...... Is there a setting for this on kde, that needs to be fixed?

Jun 16, 2011Oooookay, so basically the idea I have is that I would like to boot Windows XP over an AoE connection. This is no issue, however the problem comes when I want to have a single, read-only image as the base image and want to be able to boot multiple computers off this image.Licensing issues aside (let's assume that this complies with all licensing issues, or we can think of it as just a conceptual "how could we do this"), the basic issues are thus:Each boot of Windows will require a writable AoE device...The original disk image must be read-only to avoid changes in 1 boot affecting all boots(As far as I know) The AoE device must be a disk image, or some block device rather than a mounted file system (if this is not so, aufs could be used)So the long and the short of this, from what I can tell is that we need a read only device that we can write to.
At the end of a session, the changes to the device will be discarded, so these can be thought of as simple temporary sessions. This means that there is little concern with having changes to the original read-only image effecting the modifications to the "duplicate" images.
I would like to avoid duplicating the image for each instance, however if no solution can be reached then this could be a possibility (every boot, we can copy the image, give the fresh image to the new boot and remove when done)Optimally, changes to the filesystem will be written to a different filesystem (much like what aufs does, however as stated earlier, afaik aufs only deals with 2 mounted file systems, whereas we need the end result to be an image or block device)Sorry if I havn't explained this particularly well, however I've been trying to think of solutions, caveats and generally how to define the problem as I was writing. If you think that this idea is ridiculous because software x handles the problem better, I'd be very pleased to hear about it, but the basic requirement of temporary, network bootable windows xp sessions still applies.

Mar 18, 2011I'm looking for a Linux tool that allows me to transcode videos to a video codec that is highly compatible to the Windows platform. We produce large scientific videos from measurements and would like to show those videos during presentations and submit the videos to journals. We want to be as compatible as possible (we can not influence for example the codes installed on the presentation system or on the journal reviewers system).
Virtualdub suggests one of these codecs:
* Radius Cinepak
* Intel Indeo R3.2
* Microsoft Video 1
We tried ffmpeg, mencoder and Virtualdub under wine, none of those tools could produce videos encoded with the aforementioned codecs.

No need for input from remote users, just real time output. I don't think that VNC would work the right way For example, using a GUI interface of the BamBoo Touch where I will write on the tablet and let other see what is happening in real time.

Dec 19, 2010I've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.
Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!

Mar 20, 2011At the moment I use Rhythmbox to acces my music and my iPod 5G. I would however like to use Banshee, but in Banshee all my iPod 5G-music is displayed under the video folder, while the music folder is empty. Any idea why?And also I have several albums with different artists on them, which gets spread out on i.e. 10 single albums even though they belong to the same album. This happens - as far as I can tell - after I've accessed the iPod from Rhythmbox (which is part of the reason why I wanna use Banshee).

Mar 23, 2011I have got a Cowon iAudio 9 music player and want to display the album art images of the albums on it. The player does support this feature but only when there is a *.jpg file inside of the album folder or the image is embedded into the music file itself (did not tried that).
At the moment I'm using banshee as music management software and I like it. The album art is downloaded automatically for each album and when the player is connected it is beeing recognized and I can drag & drop albums or single songs.
The only problem is that the album art is not transfered along with the albums. The player does support MTP and MSC usb connections and is mounted as removeable usb drive to the system (Ubuntu 10.10). I would be glad if there's a solution to do that with banshee but other software solutions are welcome too.
