My problem is on bootup and shut down I get: analog input cannot display this video mode. I've got a dell monitor nvidia graphics card. Don't really know how to provide much more info than that. From what I've searched on the net is that it probably has to do with the refresh rate.
View 4 RepliesI am running a dual boot system. I have XP on one HD and Ubuntu 10.04 on the other. No problems. I boot back and forth all the time. Then came along Natty. Now I tried to boot over, and I get "Cannot display this video mode". I have it set up that when I restart, if im away from the computer, Ubuntu starts by default. So it eventually starts in ubuntu. But the screen where I used to be able to choose which operating system to boot into is now replaced with "Cannot display this video mode".
I am not wireless, and nothing has changed as far as hard wear. The monitor is some old Dell that worked perfectly fine with 10.04. I tried changing my resolution and settings to every different one, and restart, and still no dice.
To sum it up, after my update to Natty, when I reboot, my OS selection screen is no longer visible. Its now replaced by "Cannot display this video mode".
So now it seems, what ever setting this screen is running on, XP dont like it..... because of Natty?
I gotta get some work done in XP, so right now im screwed. My CRT is currently sitting outside in the rain. Or I would try it.
Using an ATI Tv wonder HD 600 card, and i'm trying to use it to view an analog signal through the coax input. Normally, I'd tune the tv to channel 3 and be done with it. I'm not really sure how to proceed with it.

I just installed Debian stable on my desktop computer and when I start it up I get a blank screen that says cannot display video in this mode.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI use natty 64 bit. I installed a HD 4870. Installed the drivers according to instruction on [URL]. I ran aticonfig --initial. Still I get "Cannot Display This video Mode" after the grub screen, during boot up. Monitor preferences applet doesn't seem to work, either - it won't detect the monitor parameters EDID thing.
When I try to open the Catalyst Control Centre I get:

This week I got a TV card partially working in Squeeze. It is a PCHDTV HD-5500, sold for use with Linux [URL]. It has a Conexant chipset and open drivers. The drivers are already in the current (Sept/Oct. 2010) Squeeze kernel, 2.6.3x.
TV reception is working with Xine and VLC (probably would be fine with mplayer too). My question is, how do I get video from the inputs on the back of the card?
There's a multi-thing that takes inputs from composite or S-video. I have one of those digital-to-analog boxes from the US TV conversion, and its composite output is plugged into the composite input of the card. Looking at the players, however, it is not obvious which device (or other input) to choose, or what settings should be. How can I make a player get the video from the plugged-in analog source?
Alright, just installed maverick, got the sound to work great on the 7.1 with pulseaudio. works great in movies, and everything else just wonderfully. the only thing i am stumped by is how to get the sound to loop from my digital input on my soundcard to my analog speakers also on the same soundcard. i know the sound feed works on the input as the makeshift VU meter/bar on my digital input in the sound preferences moves, but i can't get the sound to actually come through on my speakers.

Digital TV worked fine right out of the box (after setting up the firmware), but I have not been able to get analog video to work at all.If I run mplayer, xawtv or tvtime using /dev/video1 (yes, that is the correct devnode, video0 is a different card in my rig), So, has anyone RECENTLY gotten analog capture working on this card?

Have a Compaq Presario SR1915AN desktop with a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE it has a dual boot of Windows XP and Debian 5.0.6 which would only run in 800x600 mode.I decided to install Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop as this is what is on another different machine, thought it would be safe.The install wouldn't work, I would get the purple selections screen and first time chose the normal graphic mode, 10 seconds or so in to the install the scrren goes dead and i see the "No Signal Input" display show on the screen. Rebooted and selected text mode install, this time it fully installed but on reboot it again has the screen goes dead 10 seconds after you select from the Grub screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince 13.37 I notice that vi needs the 'home' key to switch from input to command mode. I think this is only when I connect via Putty to the machine. When I am on local console it is still ESCape like it used to be. Does anyone know how to set it so that vi will switch from input to command mode using the ESCAPE key when using Putty?

When you edit htm files, vi goes automagically into some sort of html display mode. Ofcourse I never want that since all I do is edit the html in vi. So I need to go to command mode and type :normal everytime I want to edit html files. Where can you configure that vi (or vim) default to normal mode always?

I am using LuckyBackup to back up my laptop disk to a USB disk. I would like to display to the user the message "Please mount backup disk" and have the user click "OK". LuckyBackup has a feature to allow issuing commands before it does the backup. I have been investigating scripts (I have never written one.), but do not understand how to use them to this end.

View 12 Replies View RelatedMy monitor seems to have a slightly reddish tint when using the DVI input (it's a LCD, not a CRT). On the VGA input I can adjust the colors, but not on DVI. On OSX/Windows what I would do is create a custom color profile for that display with changed gamma/etc settings, but I cannot seem to find out how to do this under Linux. Is there any way to change the color profile under linux (short of buying color calibration hardware and using dispcalgui)?

However, when I view it I get a video box, but it is grey and will not play a video. I keep playing with the various attributes but the result always seems to be the same. I also tried it on a Windows box with Firefox 3.5 (to make sure it didn't have something to do with my Linux config) but the results were the same.
I installed Fedora 11 on my system (see below) using the i686 DVD. The graphical install worked just fine, and after the system booted back up, the X server was working very well.
There is no boot text. On the other system with Fedora 11, I can see the boot text scroll by in the window and/or a progress bar at the bottom of the monitor during the boot sequence. On this system, the monitor says "No Input", and nothing appears until the login prompt for the X window. I am able to enter the BIOS configuration page and navigate through it without any issues. I can also edit the grub commands before Fedora loads without a problem.
If I boot in text mode, no login prompt appears. If I wait long enough, the monitor enters the power save mode since it is not receiving a signal. I am able to log in to the system with my user name and password, and then start the X server. Once the server starts, the monitor turns back ON and all is well.
From the X window, I use the CTL+ALT+F2 key to enter text mode. The monitor stops responding. If I press the ENTER key a couple of times, then press ALT+F7, I can briefly see the text window with a couple of login prompts before the X window starts responding again.
How can I get the text mode to work? Why is there no input to the monitor when booting?

I have a SAA7134 capture card. It works well with tvtime and with mplayer. However with vlc I get no video output. I had to reinstall the whole system a few days ago and v4l2 in vlc was working before. I am not sure what changed in my system but I don't know of any serious change.

When I try to boot into Ubuntu with the monitor attached I get a DVI: Cannot Display this Mode message on my monitor. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine if I detach the monitor. Have tried with VGA, but to no avail. I have the latest and greatest Nvidia drivers downloaded from the Nvidia web site. Googling indicates that this is a Dell problem, however, I am not sure about this. It worked just fine on my previous laptop (IBM T61) and Ubuntu 9.10, so I guess it has to do with the laptop and not Ubuntu 10.04.
in Ubuntu 10.04 I would like to enter in recovery mode, so I restarted computer and pressed <Esc> key just like in any previous version, but nothing happens Ubuntu still starts to boot.
How to enter into recovery mode in the latest version of Ubuntu?
Am running Ubuntu 9.10 with Skype 2.1. Incoming video comes in as a small window, with no capability of resizing. I don't see a way to control the size.

Color depth is only 65000 colors or more. In all settings, all is well (and the color depth is there spelled 24bit). Color depth is reduced at some time after a reboot. After further experiments with the screensaver was set: color spoils the energy saving mode and turn off the display!After disabling the option "disable display through .." color is now always saved in the norm!

I plug my laptop to my tv via an HDMI cable. I press F1 to get into my presentation mode, and the tv shows most of the desktop, but not all of it. Is there any way to conveniently make it so it automatically sets it to 1280x720?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had some crackling sound I thought I would remove some ALSA drivers and re-install them. Somehow, in the process, my computer rebooted itself and I am stuck with the classic "ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode".
Attempting to actually get graphics does not work. A CTRL-ALT-F7 yeilds the ubuntu loading screen with dots filling but it stays there eternally. I can however access my console login and am able to execute terminal commands.
I have tried a few things to no avail such as:
sudo apt-get update
sudp apt-get install nvidia-current
I run a Nvidia Geforce250.
I've just tried to install X on my new debian system which had a nasty side effect.
I can see the bootcycle up to "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated." and then the screen switches into a display mode unsupported by my display. I've had problems like this many times before because the display returns it's capabable of resolutions like 2048x1536, which it just isnt. I've had to disable autodetection whenever using this display. One thing to note thought is that it's NOT X that's messing up the display. It's setting the wrong display mode even before the filesystems are mounted. And I've already uninstalled X with no change either. Also recovery(single user) mode has no proper display output either.
what is setting my display to the wrong mode?

I think that mint downloaded somekind of display driver update wich is not compatible with my driver card. I can't see desktop, I just hear the login sound and that's all. What should I do? I've looked for the problem on google. The solution is to change the frequency of the monitor. Mine supports only 75htz max and on the error message I have 77htz, what's why it's not supported.
The problem that to change the frequency for lunux i have to be logged in linux in order to type commands in the terminal.
But I can't see a thing, only the message about the mode not supported, so I can't type anything.

I am posting this to hear if there are others with display issues on Dell E6500 laptop with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160 driver. This problem is starting to annoy me a great deal, but I am uncertain how I should move forward. In short; I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed on my Dell E6500 laptop. When using only the laptop, everything works great. The second I plug it into the docking station (the laptop lid closed) and want to use my two external monitors (Dell 2001FP) I'm in trouble. I cant see anything and what I get is a 'DVI: Cannot Display this Mode' on the primary monitor - If i try a regular VGA cable I get nothing but a black screen.
I have played around with the Nvidia config but it cant find my monitors and therefore I cant do much. I am aware of the various "hack the xorg.conf" options, but I before I do that I wanted to see if others had experienced the same thing.
