I have a SAA7134 capture card. It works well with tvtime and with mplayer. However with vlc I get no video output. I had to reinstall the whole system a few days ago and v4l2 in vlc was working before. I am not sure what changed in my system but I don't know of any serious change.
View 1 RepliesNow that I've finally learned how to use GRUB along comes GRUB 2. From my vantage point the developers seem to have overlooked some basics. Possibly, hopefully, I just need someone to straighten me out. Therefore I make some observations and would be grateful for someone to point out how I'm wrong.
To begin with it seems natural that a boot loader ought not depend on being able to boot the system in order to configure the settings used for booting. This is especially true for one calling itself grand. As best I can tell GRUB (legacy that is) does accomplish this but I'm having my doubts about GRUB 2. For example, I use GRUB as a boot manager whose job it is to boot other OS's on the same computer. I want the boot manager to be out of site and out of mind (i.e., simple to update on the rare occasion when that might be needed).
Therefore, I install it in a tiny FAT/DOS partition that I always create at the beginning of any new drive. This allows me to create multiple other partitions used to boot different OSs (e.g., in my case several versions of Linux and Windows). This means that every partition that has an OS installed on it also has the necessary software for loading that OS. In the case of Ubuntu this had become GRUB and now is GRUB 2. An important point here is that I do not expect nor want any Ubuntu system to load/boot any system other than itself. Ubuntu (GRUB 2 if you prefer) seems to go to great lengths to find other systems and configure itself to boot them. If this were done via what GRUB calls chain-loading this wouldn't be to bad.
In that, it would fit my purpose pretty well. However, GRUB has this characteristic, that I find quite undesirable, where it may load a kernel and/or mount a root filesystem from a different partition than the one from which GRUB was loaded. When cloning systems it becomes very easy to ruin multiple systems (i.e., not just the one where you made a configuration error but other stable systems as well). While some folks may like this feature I argue that there is a need for an easy foolproof way to disable it. Better yet this should be the default and those that want additional sophistication should have to enable it intentionally.
Something that I do a lot is to clone systems. The purpose is to try new or different things on a new system such that you don't screw up something that is working good while you experiment. It also provides a good method of recovering form errors that you are having difficulty troubleshooting but you aren't quite ready to trash the system that is acting up. Unfortunately you cannot count on GRUB to leave a stable system alone. The Ubuntu technique for using UUID to identify partitions causes a very particular problem when trying to clone a system.
When a partition image is created it includes the UUID. This means that when you restore the image file to a different partition the cloned system partition has the same UUID as the original partition. I've been able to circumvent this problem by changing the UUID on a live system partition before restoring an image of it to another partition. To be sure this technique risks causing a boot problem where one didn't previously exist which to my way of thinking is also poor technique. To do this I have to be able to update the GRUB configuration before being able to boot the restored partition. There are various ways to do this that basically involve mounting the newly restored partition and editing menu.lst (or whatever file might be appropriate). However, what you very definitely cannot do is to depend on booting the system in order to run the update-grub script.
It seems that GRUB 2 intends that the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file should not be edited. It provides a means to add custom menu entries by editing files in /etc/grub.d. However, this technique also depends on being able to run update-grub which cannot be done until after you have a way to boot the system. As best I can tell my only alternative is to edit grub.cfg.
My problem is on bootup and shut down I get: analog input cannot display this video mode. I've got a dell monitor nvidia graphics card. Don't really know how to provide much more info than that. From what I've searched on the net is that it probably has to do with the refresh rate.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:

arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 1 -vv -V mono /dev/null
it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do

arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?
I installed Lucid. I used to have Ubuntu 9.10 and to connect my iPod to my laptop's speakers. There was an option in 9.10 in the Sound Options to change the Mic Input into a Line Input. But now unfortunately I can't find it in Lucid have only 2 audio ports in the laptop: Headphone port, Mic port.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...

I have an integrated intel video and latest xserver-xorg-video-intel driver(using only stable repo). Now I wanna watch high-res video. From the bits of info collected from all over internet I understood that I need to:
1.aptitude install libdrm libva.
2.compile or find the .deb mplayer-vaapi and install it.
3.add -vo vaapi -va vaapi to the mplayer command line in gnome-mplayer.
My question : is that correct or did I miss something? Do I have to compile latest libdrm and libva or the ones from the squeeze repo will be good? Do I need kms enabled, i.e. install firmware-linux-nonfree?
I'm looking for a Linux tool that allows me to transcode videos to a video codec that is highly compatible to the Windows platform. We produce large scientific videos from measurements and would like to show those videos during presentations and submit the videos to journals. We want to be as compatible as possible (we can not influence for example the codes installed on the presentation system or on the journal reviewers system).
Virtualdub suggests one of these codecs:
* Radius Cinepak
* Intel Indeo R3.2
* Microsoft Video 1
We tried ffmpeg, mencoder and Virtualdub under wine, none of those tools could produce videos encoded with the aforementioned codecs.
When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?
is this possible? Or does one have to use the binary blobs?

Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

View 8 Replies View Relatedthis happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.
