General :: Vim To Input A Single Character And Continue In Command Mode

I increase my knowledge in vim in two ways. Little hints about doing this or that and scattered studies using the vim help files. Please do not believe I always rely on the first one.

Have this script which is reading in a series of files, one at a time with while-do-done loop, each file goes through various greps/awk's where this info is then saved to various files for later use. i.e....
Script is being run on Linux Red Hat,
In one of the grep/awk's the output (currently) are 2 columns (min max), i.e....| awk '{print $1, $2}' | sort -u which outputs (e.g.)
The number of "min max" pairs varies from file to file. Want to output a single column of unique numbers from the min max pairs & get the number of them for input to a file...i.e...
Where <PROCESS> is some process/technique that will generate a single column of integers (increment of 1) to pipe into the next one (sort -u)
i.e. (example from above)
Have tried command seq - only works for single pair input i.e.
Is there any command like seq etc which will output a single column based on a input of min max numbers (increment 1) to pipe onwards to next command?

My linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.

Since 13.37 I notice that vi needs the 'home' key to switch from input to command mode. I think this is only when I connect via Putty to the machine. When I am on local console it is still ESCape like it used to be. Does anyone know how to set it so that vi will switch from input to command mode using the ESCAPE key when using Putty?
Another vi question :
When you edit htm files, vi goes automagically into some sort of html display mode. Ofcourse I never want that since all I do is edit the html in vi. So I need to go to command mode and type :normal everytime I want to edit html files. Where can you configure that vi (or vim) default to normal mode always?
<I see that vi links to elvis : >
# ls -al /usr/bin/vi lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Oct 3 2009 /usr/bin/vi -> elvis*

I have a character app running on a Linux server with a telnet thin client. This app requires 3 input values that I would like to be filled in from a scale indicator that is connected via serial to the PC running this app. I feel like this is doable but not sure how. The app is running in Progress 10.1B. Currently I can see the 3 values coming from the serial port with hyperterminal but I do not want to have to rekey into the app.

I moved from a Linux environment from one company to another and one annoying difference came out:When I used to run an application in a terminal (no GUI), the transcript lines were presented one the window - when the window was full then the scrolling of the lines would continue only if one hit the space bar to proceed (of course waiting to user input did not stop the run).
In the new environment the behavior is different - transcript lines keep going on and on so I need to scroll up - and moreover each page-up command is cancelled by the new lines appearing.perhaps this is also reproduce with other Linux commands , say "find" or "ls".

I've created Oracle Enterprise 5 Virtual machine. It was running fine but not sure what went wrong and now when ever I reboot the machine, it goes to single user mode. If I enter "init 5" command it boots to multi-user X11 mode without any problem.I checked inittab file and default line has id 5. So it looks OK. What else can be wrong?

I need to create a single line of output from multiple and variable lines of input in a Linux bash shell script.
My input file looks like this:
Where there may be any number of umsecondaryphonenumber lines; if there is not a umsecondaryphonenumber line for a telephonenumber, I don't want to write any output.
So, the output file should look like:
The script I have so far is:
My question is - how do print each of the elements of an array in one record - i.e. what do I put in place of howdoiprintarray?

I'm running debian lenny. Suddenly when I rebooted my system I was unable to login. I type root and the password and it tells me the login is incorrect. If I boot into single user mode, it accepts the password just fine. Looking in the /etc/shadow file, it appears to be fine as well.Running passwd to set a new password sets a new password just fine, i can login to single user mode with the new password, however, I cannot login at a higher runlevel with the password.
If I delete a password in the /etc/shadow file, then try to login as that user, it simply says "Login Incorrect" without even asking for a password.

I've written two web pages that show the status of a internal application. The idea was to display both of them, on two different monitors, using only a single PC with two graphic cards. The system will be mounted to a wall and has no keyboard or mouse. That's why I need a script that will automatically launch two instances of firefox (in kiosk mode), each on it's own monitor.Currently the OS installed on the PC is OpenSuse, but I'm free to install a different linux flavor. So, how do I launch firefox on a specific monitor?

I have this dump script that performs either full or incremental backups depending on the day of the week. From what I have read, when using dump you should drop to single user mode to help prevent the backups from being inconsistent before you issue the dump command. What I want is the script to drop to single user mode, perform the backups using dump, and then go back to runlevel 3 after the backups complete.
I know when you enter init 1 to drop to single user mode, but doing so within a script reboots the computer and drops it to single user mode and the rest of the script doesn't complete. What would be a good method for me to be able to accomplish what I want to do? Do I need to run other scripts that would call mine?I am running Centos 5.4

I'm having a small issue with regex matching in Perl. I'm pretty certain it's a simple fix, but it all looks correct to me...
If I run the following:
Code:
It prints out all the lines containing a 'P', as one would expect. But when the regex is
Code:
I get zero lines printed. It seems to match only single-character patterns.
The file I'm reading is: (It has the same effect whether I leave it with Windows linebreaks or convert them to unix).
Code:

I followed instructions to enter single user mode by adding single at the end of kernel line but after that it doesn't ask for root password but brings up the sh# prompt. Isn't that supposed to be insecure? I understand for this the grub password can be applied but even after adding "single" it should ask for root password..or it should not..??

The lines beginning with greater-than symbols are the sequence descriptors and the lines immediately after each descriptor with A-Z characters, dashes, and question marks are the aligned DNA sequences. The sequences are always the same length within a file and never span/wrap across more than one line.I am trying to write a script to remove positions in the sequences that are only represented by a -, X, ?, or N (these represent gaps or missing data). Also, if there is exactly one non-gap/missing character in a position it is also useless (there is nothing to compare it to) so I would like to remove those positions as well.
Position 5 (from the left) was removed because it was all gap/missing characters. Position 9 was removed because only one character was a non-gap/missing character. Position 10 was retained because there were 2 non-gap/missing characters.I'm really not sure where to start here. My first concern is I can't figure out how to tell awk to treat each character in lines not containing a greater-than symbol as a separate field. After that, I'm thinking I should use set up a counter to count the number of lines with gap/missing characters comparing that to the total number of lines not containing greater-than signs?

I wish to allow a user to use sudo to run a single command (service app status) to determine if my application app is running, in my sudoers file i have: user ALL= /sbin/service app status I understand that there is a parameter called timestamp_timeout that will set the timeout for the 'user', but requires at least 1 entry of the root password.
I wish to allow the user to do "sudo service app status" and not have to enter the root password ever(maybe once is ok), but still make the user enter the root password for all other root activities. Is there a way to prevent the password entry for this command only and no others?

After seeing those 4G phone commercials with that newfangled mobile hotspot tech, I have to admit I was eager to trade in my crappy 2 year old CDMA phone for one. That is, until I saw the price tag. 30$ a month for hotspot? No way, so what I did was activate the tethering feature buried deep within the primitive OS accessible only with a plethora of codes and hackery. So long story short: I can now network on the go because Ubuntu sees my device as a "mobile broadband device". Unfortunately, my ipod lacks a USB port for tethering so I use my freed up wireless card to make an AD-HOC network for my ipod to connect through my makeshift modem. Now, my issue is that the modem isn't really that mobile any more because I have to have my laptop OPEN to keep my networks on ,otherwise I close my laptop and no more Adhoc or mobile broadband! So, my question is if I can close my laptop but still keep it connected to the mobile broadband and broadcasting the adhoc network.
