Ubuntu :: All Thunderbird Windows Are Tiny And Blank
Oct 30, 2010
All of sudden, as of yesterday, I can't read any windows that Thunderbird displays. First of all they are hard to find, because they're a couple of pixels wide and may two dozen pixels tall. Once I find and enlarge them, they have no content they're blank. Everything worked fine until yesterday. I haven't found any other application misbehaving.

Thunderbird has been running on my Fedora 13. After a recent yum update, it opens a tiny window in the upper left corner of my screen, which I can enlarge manually. There are no contents in the window. I cannot see anything.

At work we are trying to avoid paying for a cert for our outlook owa. I thought of Tiny CA, but can't find a windows variant, it appears to depend on things that would not allow that.
Does anyone know if it is possible to create a Tiny CA Cert and install it on a Windows Server 2003? If not does anyone know of a good free Cert creation utility for Winedoze.
I have a feeling this is going to be another feather in the basket to convince my boss to go Ubunutu.

I am trying to do as the title states, I am however having problems. I have tried deleting the profile and profile.ini in kubuntu and copying over the windows profile to home/user/.mozilla/firefox for example with firefox, this didn't work. I tried copying it there with the existing profile and changing the path of the ini file, to the windows profile name, this didn't work either. The only thing that I can think is that I am using 64 bit windows and 32 bit kubuntu.I have tried using firefox sync, this didn't work either.

My wife has decided to give linux a try. I've installed Mint Linux 10 for her.Last week (bad timing) I converted her to Thunderbird. Now I have the task of moving all her mail folders and account settings from Thunderbird under Windows 7 to Thunderbird under linux.Other postings say all I have to do is copy the Windows profile directory to her home directory and rename it .thunderbird.
Doesn't work. When I start Thunderbird all it displays is a window for new account details.I tried just copying the <gibberish>.default directory across and renaming it to the one that was there. Again, no luck. Before it started using sqlite things were simple!I backed up with MozBackup, and then noticed that it only works with Windows.

I've finally got all my accounts the way I like them in Thunderbird. I'm using IMAP and so don't have to move the emails, but how do I migrate my account settings to my other computers? The other machines are running WinXP.

My Linux laptop has recently been hanging for no apparent reason, and so I have been using a Mac OS X laptop in the meantime. I just installed Thunderbird and wanted to copy all my preferences and account settings to the new laptop. All email accounts are IMAP based. Can I simply copy the data, or does Thunderbird for OS X store data in a different format from OS X? What about if I wanted to copy the preferences to Thunderbird under Windows? Finally, what files do I copy? I haven't powered up the Linux laptop yet but I'm guessing there's a ~/.thunderbird/ directory, can I just copy this to the Mac?

Just upgraded to 11.04 and now I frequently get windows with nothing in them. Happens randomly when I launch a new app, or switch between apps, or maximize the window for an app. Is this a known bug?

I just switched to OpenSUSE/KDE4 from Ubuntu/Gnome2. Overall, I am very pleased. However, I have an issue that I have been unable to resolve. That is, Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole Terminal do not have maximize buttons in their titlebars and there is not any other way to maximize these windows. Also, if I right click on the task manager tab for those applications then the "Maximize" menu item in the context menu is grayed out so it is inaccessible too. The bottom line is that there is no way to maximize these windows. All other applications, such as Dolphin, Chromium, Konqurer, LibreOffice, etc. have maximize buttons and a "maximize" menu item in their task manager context menus. Then, why don't Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole also have maximize buttons? I am using the Oxygen theme and have configured the buttons on the Oxygen theme to include the Maximize button.

I've been trying to burn a windows 7 iso to a blank disc in ubuntu.
I've tried right click-write to disk, it writes it but the disc won't boot and when I look inside the disc there's no files present.
I tried doing it with cd creator and it gives me some messages like.
"Do you want to create a disc from the contents of the image or with the image file inside?"
"There is only one selected file
("xxxxxx.iso") It is the image of a disc and its contents can be burnt."
I click "burn as file"
Then I get a message saying "Do you really want to add "xxxxxx.iso to the selection and use the version of ISO9660 standard to support it"?
"the size of the file is over 2gb. Files larger than 2gb are not supported by iso9660 standard in its first and second versions. it is recommended to use the third version of iso9660 standard which is supported by most operating systems including linux and all versions of windows."
I click add file.
Then it starts "estimating the file size" It says please wait untill this operation is completed, but it never does, I left it for 2 hours.
I also tried burning with infra record in windows and get some error messages, and I also tried brasero in ubuntu with no success.

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I tried using Wubi to install Ubuntu 9.10. It worked fine in the Windows part of it. After the restart, I got the ubuntu option. Selected it. Something about pressing ESC for more booting option came. Then two lines of something, and then a BLANK screen for the next hour. I hard rebooted then. Selected Ubuntu again, and pressed ESC and booted into Verbose mode. Still the blank screen ALWAYS comes. No errors. Just the blank screen. What am I supposed to do? I tried reinstalling through Wubi, but the BLANK SCREEN ALWAYS COMES. I am trying an online tutorial for dual booting Windows 7 along with Ubuntu, but the guy in the tutorial says just boot live. What is that? Like just setup your BIOS and put the cd in? I am gonna try it in sometime, after my cd is burned, but still, better if I get a reply before that.
Okay, I tried with the cd, selected the option of trying Ubuntu without installing, but again the BLANK SCREEN loves me, so it won't leave. Do you think I've got a corrupt copy of Ubuntu. It is the torrent, that is linked on their official website. Should I like redownload it and try? I really want to try out Ubuntu.
With the cd I also tried checking the cd for errors option on the screen, and that too showed no errors. I want my windows installation to stay but I want to try Ubuntu along too. Still I tried installing Ubuntu, without trying to let Windows stay or something, but still, obviously the BLANK SCREEN.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) Desktop Edition Gnome.
I was a Vim user in Windows. I heard that Ubuntu comes with a compact version of Vim called vim-tiny.
I wonder if this latest version of Ubuntu comes with vim-tiny or the complete version (is there any way of checking which one is being opened with the vim command in the terminal?). If it is vim-tiny, how can I install the complete version of Vim and start it inside the terminal with the "vim" command? Because right now vim-tiny (I guess) starts by typing "vim" in the terminal.
will the vimrc of the tiny version interfere with the complete version of Vim?

i just restarted because of some problems and as i booted, the ubuntu logo with the load thing was looking different and errors appeared under the logo. The resolution is 1024x786, but it was way higher before. When i click on System/Preferences/Monitors it says "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead? y/n" I have a broken package: sun-java6-jre, is it because of that?

I just upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze and now when I enter startx I get a solid black screen and the computer does not respond to any keyboard input. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Esc, Alt-F2, Alt-F4, etc. all do nothing. No beeps or anything. I have an NVidia graphics card and have been using the proprietary NVidia drivers. I originally thought the problem might be related to this driver but I tried both the nv and vesa drivers and got the same results.
Attached is my Xorg.log.0 file. It just ends after the GLX extension initialization.I am able to use ssh to login after running startx. Running "ps aux" from the remote machine I did not see a process for X. I copied the output below the Xorg.log.0 file.

For some reason, sometimes after I just turn the computer off by pressing the power button while hooked up to the video mount, I'll turn the computer on and (after it automatically logs into the standard user) come to a blank black screen. The only thing I can access is by pressing Alt+Tab to get a "no present windows" window, and thats it. Could it be that an activity or something has been deleted somehow?

after I installed the ATI Radeon 3400 series video card in my machine, the Xserver cant start! after it loads, it takes me to the init 3. When I tried startx, the screens either go blank or doesnt let me. I tried to install everything following this website:
[URL]
I wanted dual monitors but now I cant even get one. The xwindows doesnt appear. Things I tried:
1. Deleted the xorg.conf and reconfigured (didnt work).
2. sax2 -r -m 0=versa (didnt work)
3. reconfigured the ATI radeon driver from init 3 (didnt work)
4. copy and paste the oold version of xorg.conf (didnt work)
5. tried to run set apt or dpkg-reconfigure command (commands not found)
6. tried xconfig and prompt the best I coudl (didnt work).
7. aticonfig commands (As shown in website) (also didnt work)
I have the live CD to run it from there but I dont know what to do once I get to the terminal. Is there any way I can revert to previous configuration since the ATI driver gives me some problems? Like a restore function in windows? how or what files I should change for the X-server to run properly (is there any other file than xorg.conf?....)
The monitors I have:
2009W Dell Monitor
1398 Dell Monitor (I wan to get the dual exntended monitor but it seems to gave me only the mirror image, thats why I tried to reconfigure the video card)
VideoCard:
ATI HD Radeon Mobile 3400 Series
Computer:
Dell Optiplex 680 (i believe) with SUSE 11.26 and x86_64 bit

So I installed Kubuntu 10.10 on my mac mini 3,1. Everything worked smoothly until I ran the updater and installed the nVidia drivers (I was using an install DVD I burned back when I was doing the beta test. Under nVidia, a lot of text like menus and the like is showing up excessively tiny- like half to one third the size its supposed to. I suspect a problem related to my monitor, which is an LCD TV. This happens at all resolutions.
I can scale up the text in workspace appearance, but the amount of space for menus and icons doesn't change one bit and the larger text just gets chopped off. Anyone had this same problem? I'm really hesitant about going out and connecting a VGA monitor- I don't have an adapter on hand and I'd rather not go explaining to the Apple store that I'm having trouble with it on Linux.
Ironic thing is, text displayed as part of a web page in Firefox shows at the correct resolution. Edit: I got to looking in the nVidia controls, and it says my resolution is 49x50 DPI. That should be like 96x96 or so.
