Thunderbird has been running on my Fedora 13. After a recent yum update, it opens a tiny window in the upper left corner of my screen, which I can enlarge manually. There are no contents in the window. I cannot see anything.

All of sudden, as of yesterday, I can't read any windows that Thunderbird displays. First of all they are hard to find, because they're a couple of pixels wide and may two dozen pixels tall. Once I find and enlarge them, they have no content they're blank. Everything worked fine until yesterday. I haven't found any other application misbehaving.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have setup a vnc server using the "every imagineable server" thread which setups up VPN using xinetd. I have also installed Beesu and its associated scripts so I can easily open root privileged nautilus windows.
beesu works a treat on the actual display. However whilst vnc'd into the box I get prompted for my root password (which it accepts) but a nautilus window never opens. No errors, it just doesn't open.
since yesterday when I open up an explorer style window, say I browsed folders in Gnome for each folder it opens a new window. However; when I go to change it so it does it in the same window either through edit properties or system/preferences/file management it does not open and instead a bugzilla window opens as it crashes (taking my desktop with it until it refreshes)

But there is one anoying problem - when i want to listen to song it opens VLC, but when i open another song it opens another new VLC window. And this problemug or whatever didnt apear in Windows version VLC player.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.
I installed jabref via packages on lucid.When I start it via command line or applications menu it starts, but is initially a minimal size (not minimized) window at the top-left of the screen.If I resize or maximize it everything works properly.This doesn't happen with other programs.Any idea how I can get it to start in a normal usable size?I tried resizing, closing, and reopening it.I also tried having a database open or not.

I'm having problems with vpnc on F12 that work fine on F10 and F11. On F12, I can connect and can do some activities, but so far I noticed the following (show-stopping) issues:Attempting to connect to an Oracle database using either sqlplus or TORa hangs and eventually times out. I tried both the 11G and 10G instant clients.Copying a file to the host via a smb:// mount in nautilus freezes. An empty file is created though.
A rdesktop client opens a "black" window and goes no further. I attempted to downgrade vpnc on my F12 workstation from vpnc-0.5.3-4.fc12.x86_64 to vpnc-0.5.3-3.fc11.x86_64 to no avail. I also downgraded libgcrypt too and this didn't help either. Moreover, I upgraded these to the F13 rawhide version - still no luck.
I also confirmed on a F11 virtual machine that these work and that it doesn't work on 2 x64 and 1 x386 F12 machines. (The configuration and the host are the same in all cases.)
every time i play a file, vlc opens a new window for that file and does not close the already running file... I find it inconvenient to close the previous window in order to listen to a new song.
Is there any way to automatically close the previous file as soon as another is played?
I have seen when people click on an icon that is on the doc, it opens up a pop up window that has application you can click on. I have Cairo Dock. With it, I can add a shortcut menu and a Stack icon. From there,I can add applications, but they have a generic *.desktop icon. Is there any way to get the same Mac effect from Cairo Dock, or maybe even a shortcut to the applications folder in Ubuntu?By the way, can someone tell me the default path to the applications folder?"

I"m running 10.04 on a netbook. I switched my Java look and feel to Nimbus and now my java application opens with most of the buttons and window content missing. The main menu is there, but otherwise the main form is mostly blank. If I restart the application (not my computer) 2-3 times, the problem is resolved until the next time I have to launch the java app. I did not see this issue before changing the look & feel setting for Java. But the GTK l&F doesn't work for other reasons, so I was forced to make a change.
I'm running compiz and I know the blank windows in Java apps was a common problem a while back. I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is related to that old problem or is something different.
If any window opens initially on full screen (maximized) the "desktop effects" switch off. I then have to reset "enable desktop effects".
It happens with any window from any application that opens full screen.
If a window is maximized after it has already opened all is fine, it does not stop the desktop effects.
Running: openSUSE 14.4
I have Suse 11.4 and GNOME 2.32.1 When I click on Computer -> Places -> Home then VLC Media Player opens instead of the window with my home folder that should actually pop up. The same thing happens with all other icons in the Places tab.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I was fooling around with compiz settings manager and was trying to get the cube to rotate around, and by doing so I disabled some plugins (because I was prompted to do so) and now Unity is gone and everything opens in the upper left hand corner so much so that I can't move the window. It was pretty rash for me just to disable plugins,how to get everything back to normal.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI updated my laptop to Ubuntu 10.04 and among the many problems I've had is this strange one with Thunderbird 3. It will not refresh it's window. That is, it loads, and some of the panes (such as the one on the bottom right that shows the selected message) remain blank.
The work around I found is to grab the title bar and move the window. That will force a refresh, but it is terribly annoying to write a message and not see the words until I stop and move the window a hair.
This behavior happens when the Appearance settings (System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual effect) are set to "Normal" or "Extra". Under "none" Thunderbird behaves normally, but everything else looks terrible!
I'm guessing this is a Compiz problem; has anyone else seen this happen? more importantly, how do I fix it? and all other programs work fine under all appearance settings.
i have ubuntu 10.04 installed and i haven't touched anything apparently relevant in its configuration. many times, when an application opens a new window and this should receive focus, it doesn't. for example, i'm in mozilla thunderbird and i click on "write" to write a new message, and i keep waiting, "why does it take so much to open???" - until i realised that the new message window was immediately opened but it didn't get focus, it is just blinking (in a barely pereivable way) in the panel on the bottom and i have to click on it to give it focus. it is not just thunderbird - just about any program, but not always. sometimes the same happens when switching some flash player web application to fullscreen mode (such as videos or megavideo): the full screen does not appear, i have to click on the icon on the panel on the bottom.
sometimes, even more weired behaviour are observed. for example, let's suppose i have windows a, b and c open and none of them is minimized. i'll call "icon" a window's button on the bottom panel. i click alternatively on icons of windows a, b, c, a, b, c and so on. expected: every time i click on a window's icon, the window should get focus and be brought to the front. observed: when i get to window a, it toggles its state from open to minimized and viceversa, that is, when i switch from c to a, it does as if i was already on a, so instead of bringing it to front, it minimizes it; then next time i come back to a, it gets restored.
I'm building a Cluster with 20 small Compaq ipaq PC's as the nodes. I have absolutely no room for any keyboards on this cluster. The PC's require a keyboard to boot, and there are no BIOS settings I can adjust to fix this problem, and no BIOS updates. I have found a small DOS .com program by Compaq called NO_F1.com it's designed to allow the computer to continue to boot without a keyboard. it's only 172 bytes in size. It sets a bit in the CMOS which allows the boot process to continue without a keyboard. It does not permanently set anything, so it needs to run each time the computer starts.
Is there any way I can execute this program very early in the boot process every time the node boots ? I thought about dissembling the program and trying to modify the boot loader, or some other ASM program, the program is only 172 bytes. But thats really over my head. What could I try, I don't know what to do. Also, I have no floppy drive and no CD drive to boot from, only USB or hard drive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got my livna, and rpm fusion repositories in order today, and my dvd started playing movies, but when I tried my cd rom, nothing happened when I inserted a music cd. I googled for info and came accross a blog talking about permissions. And when I right clicked on my cd drive icon and looked into permissios, it said: "The permissions of "CD DRIVE" could not be determined. The open with tab was blank, so I selected "Rythmbox" and thought that would fix it, but it's still not doing any thing after inserting cd. Also if I try looking up the cd from within Rythmbox, the cd doesn't show.

There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern, and it's happened in trusted sites when clicking on various links (like this one for instance), but Firefox will suddenly go mad and just start opening window after window.
The only way I can get out of it is 'ps -ef' 'ing for the firefox process and killing it.
This has happened under both 10 and 12.

Is there some way top stop the "blind effect" of compiz so that when you double click the top title bar of a window that it maximizes the window instead of the rolling up type effect? Also when i place my mouse on the top right of the screen it brings it to a choosing window type mode where you can pick which window you would like to open, is it possible to get this on the top left of the screen instead? Lastly when I use Kdebluetooth4 to send a file to my computer where does that file save to?

Nothing is running it's complete, so I have to close the box then the terminal closes. I know I'm a perfectionist. how to get rid of this?

The script appears to run but the foreground process closes unexpectedly.
