OpenSUSE :: Unable To Maximize Firefox / Thunderbird And Konsole Windows

Jul 25, 2011

I just switched to OpenSUSE/KDE4 from Ubuntu/Gnome2. Overall, I am very pleased. However, I have an issue that I have been unable to resolve. That is, Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole Terminal do not have maximize buttons in their titlebars and there is not any other way to maximize these windows. Also, if I right click on the task manager tab for those applications then the "Maximize" menu item in the context menu is grayed out so it is inaccessible too. The bottom line is that there is no way to maximize these windows. All other applications, such as Dolphin, Chromium, Konqurer, LibreOffice, etc. have maximize buttons and a "maximize" menu item in their task manager context menus. Then, why don't Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole also have maximize buttons? I am using the Oxygen theme and have configured the buttons on the Oxygen theme to include the Maximize button.

Software :: KDE Crashes When Windows Too Small (quick Tile, Firefox, Konsole)?

Apr 18, 2011

I'm running KDE 4.6.00 on openSuSE 11.4. The system is nearly perfect in my mind, minus some weird KDE crashes. I've set the meta+left/right keys to perform the "quick tile" operation. When I have a firefox (or konsole) window tiled on the left or right half of my screen, un-tiling it (for example, pressing meta+left when it is tiled to the right) will sometimes cause the window to become too small to see. In about 90% of the times that this happens, the program crashes. In case this is not clear, I'm starting with a window which is tiled on half of my screen, and I want to either move it to the other half, or just get it to the not-tiled state in the middle of my screen, then it shrinks, and usually crashes.

I tried setting the startup geometry for both konsole and firefox. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. I can avoid the problem by manually resizing a quick-tiled window from half-screen size to something smaller, in lieu of using the meta+right/left keys to undo the quick-tile and put it in the center of the screen

Ubuntu :: Migrating Firefox / Thunderbird Profiles From Windows

Apr 28, 2011

I am trying to do as the title states, I am however having problems. I have tried deleting the profile and profile.ini in kubuntu and copying over the windows profile to home/user/.mozilla/firefox for example with firefox, this didn't work. I tried copying it there with the existing profile and changing the path of the ini file, to the windows profile name, this didn't work either. The only thing that I can think is that I am using 64 bit windows and 32 bit kubuntu.I have tried using firefox sync, this didn't work either.

OpenSUSE :: 'maximize Window' Effect - Delay When Maximizing Windows (Gnome)?

Mar 2, 2010

Using gnome I love the desktop effects, except the 'maximize window' effect. There is an annoying delay when I maximize a window. Is there a way to turn this particular effect off, while leaving all the others on. I looked in control center>desktop effects, but the option is not there. The only way I could turn off the maximize effect was unchecking the "enable desktop effects" checkbox. But this turns all effects off. All other effects run smooth and snappy.

OpenSUSE :: Cannot Launch URL From Thunderbird 3.04b To Firefox

Nov 14, 2009

This is a fresh install of 11.2 KDE-4.3.1.

After reviewing all of the 11.2 Milestone 64-bit DVDs, Milestone 1 - 8 - I was always able to launch Firefox from Thunderbird in search of add-ons or an html link.

It stopped working in RC1, RC2.

I thought this was resolved for openSUSE 11.2. The problem still exists!

Now, thinking the problem was with Thunderbird 3.0.4b. I navigated to Configure Desktop --> Personal Settings --> General --> Default Applications:

Changed Email Client from KMail to Thunderbird

From within KMail I can launch Firefox. However, Thunderbird 3.0.4b does NOT launch Konqueror nor Firefox 3.5.4 !!

In addition the Thunderbird 3.04b Help does NOT work.

Could the setting of Default Applications be broken in KDE-4.3.1 " release 6 " ??

I'm sure I cannot be the only one experiencing this at home???

OpenSUSE :: Thunderbird And Firefox Always Crashing / Why Is So?

Nov 18, 2010

I'm trying to figure out why firefox and thunderbird keep crashing on me. I just installed Suse 11.3 64-bit with Gnome 2.30.0. I am using firefox version 3.6.12 and thunderbird version 3.1.6. They crash half of the time when something has to load, such as an attachment or download. Is there anything I can do about this?

OpenSUSE :: Failure Migrating Firefox And Thunderbird From 11.2 To 11.3

Sep 9, 2010

get my system from 11.2 to 11.3, I made a clean, new install instead of an upgrade. (I also used the opportunity to change to a new, bigger harddrive.) I installed Mozilla Thunderbird from the repositories and (using the root account) tried to replace the automatic entry in .thunderbird with my own cryptic-named folder which I copied in from external storage. I changed the target name in the profiles.ini to my folder's name. (I also made sure that although "root" did the copying, my main user is still the owner of all folders and files.)Same procedure for Firefox (except for the installation part).

I made the same kind of copying for the OpenOffice "user"-folder and Office came up with all my individual settings. But both Firefox and Thunderbird gave a failure notice, telling that "the program is already running, but does not react. In order to open a new window, you need to shutdown the existing process or restart your computer."(Original German: "Thunderbird wird bereits ausgefhrt, reagiert aber nicht. Um ein neues Fenster ffnen zu knnen, mssen Sie zuerst den bestehenden Thunderbird-Prozess beenden oder ihren Computer neu starten.")

I restarted the computer several times, but to no avail. (A similar (or the same) bug was reported two years ago, but it seems that no solution was reached [see ]Thunderbird lt sich nicht mehr starten - linuxforen.de -- User helfen Usern.)

OpenSUSE :: Firefox And Thunderbird: Upgrade - Restore From Prior HD?

Aug 17, 2010

I had FF and TB running on a desktop computer which was on Suse 11.0. That computer has gone to the Great Interrupt in the Sky. The hard drive still works, and I can hook it up to the replacement (laptop) with an eSATA cable. Thus, all of my email, settings, bookmarks, etc are sitting there waiting to go back to work.

My new laptop is on Suse 11.2, with the FF version which came on the DVD (from Linux Pro Magazine in February). I would like to A), load the latest vers of FF and TB onto this laptop, and B), move my older FF and TB stuff to run here. I am little more than the ignorant appliance operator so derided by Linux gurus in the "Why New Users Give Up" thread. I want to learn more, but my primary need is PRODUCTIVITY, so what I need is an 1D10T-level stepthrough to get done what I need to do.

OpenSUSE :: Yast2, Firefox, Thunderbird Don't Work After Update?

Nov 22, 2010

Some time ago I did an automatic update and after that firefox, thunderbird and yast2 don't start. It's not that there is an error message or sth. Their icons just start jumping and after a while it stops without anything opened. I tried even removing the zilla directories and so on but it doesn't help. Of course I tried to simply reboot the machine and strangely enough, still does not work. Opera works though and I am ok with that, however yast2 not opening is more annoying. I do all the stuff that I want from the console, but of course that's not the point

How can I change their themes?

Slackware :: 12.2 - Firefox 3.5.6 - Go Into A KDE Konsole Xterm

Jan 1, 2010

I'd try here first, since I am running slackware, though it's a firefox problem ... To verify bug, just go into a KDE konsole xterm, and do

[13:35 ~]$ mkdir ~/ffbug
[13:35 ~]$ touch ~/ffbug/_$'31'_
[13:35 ~]$ firefox file://$(echo ~)/ffbug &

(This assumes you didn't already have a ~/ffbug directory, and you have firefox 3.5.6 installed -- the prior firefox id not have this problem) What you will probably see is firefox trying to display a listing of the ~/ffbug directory, but instead showing an error message: XML Parsing Error: not well-formed. I posted this in the mozillazine forum, where it got read 20 times, but no response.

OpenSUSE :: Unable To Change Default Browser In Thunderbird

Jun 14, 2010

I've been using Thunderbird (2.0.0.24) with html attachments opening in Firefox.I just installed the new Chrome browser (5.0.375.70) and like it very much, enough so that I decided to switch from Firefox now that the Add-Ons I like are available for Chrome (Lastpass, Adblock, AutoPager). I've made Chrome the default browser in KDE's "Configure Desktop>Default Applications", but html attachments in Thunderbird still open in Firefox.I've tried most of the fixes offered on this and other forums as well as those offered by Mozilla's various help files, but nothing works. Most suggestions refer to fixes for 1.x versions of Thunderbird and no longer can be used.I just checked another OpenSUSE 11.2 PC with the newer 3.04 version of T'bird and saw no solution there either.

Sometimes when firefox is open, clicking the firefox icon on the taskbar to maximize firefox rotates my desktop to the next one over. Super annoying, as I have to go and rotate back. Is there a fix to this problem? I think it has something to do with a pop-up that never gets attention when it needs it. Unfortunately, I don't know a good way to reproduce this problem on command yet.

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Maximize Firefox Cause Application Not Listed On Panel

May 7, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with dual monitors with a nvidia GeForce 8400GS. I can't figure out how to fix. On the primary screen on the Gnome Panel it shows all my open applications. I currently have VirtualBox, Firefox, and 3 Terminal windows open and they show up on the panel. I can minimize and maximize, etc from the panel bar. This is my issue. If I move say one of the Terminal sessions to the second monitor it disappears from the primary monitor's panel bar.

If I click the hide all applications and show desktop icon there is no way for me to reopen just that terminal window that was on my second screen. I noticed this when I moved my Firefox window to the second screen and minimized everything with the show desktop icon. I could not maximize Firefox cause the application was not listed on the panel. I had to kill Firefox and relaunch.

Software :: Terminal And Konsole Windows Show Strange Characters

Oct 1, 2009

When I open a terminal or konsole window, output (either STDOUT or STDERR) sometimes contains funny characters instead of something meaningful. Can someone explain how I might correct this situation?

ANALYSIS:
One very repeatable example involves using the manual page command

Code:
man set... man page output ...upstart - event-based init daemon

In my copy of the output, there are several problems in the very first screen. In the synopsis section, there is "{ value | ?value? ..." Replace the '?' with a lower-case-a-under-a-carat character (a-hat).
I suspect the garble character might be apostrophe in real life.

In other places, I see var?/able or how?/ever or trans?/action where the '?' is again a-hat and the '/' represents end of line or newline. I suspect the garble character might be a hyphen in real life.

All of this suggests that there is a conflict between the character stream written to STDOUT by the man command and the character-display settings (is that "code page" or similar?) of the specific terminal or konsole in use.

In specific, I use konsole v1.6.6 from KDE v3.5.10. In general, I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (v8.04.3 LTS).
