Ubuntu Installation :: Precautions To Take When Upgrading Windows On Windows/kubuntu Dualboot PC?

May 31, 2010

I have a Vista/Kubuntu dualboot, with grub2 as my loader. Because i have read that Windows likes to ignore something else present on the system and overwrite everything with itself. So i installed Vista, then Kubuntu. Now i want to upgrade my Vista to Win7. My question is - what should i do in order to keep my current dualboot intact (Grub2 as a loader, and kubuntu fully functional). I fear Win7 might even never ask me about keeping my kubuntu dualboot, just overwrite everything. PS: My bootinfoscript output

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Login To GNOME After Upgrading

May 4, 2010

Yesterday I did a successful upgrade to 10.04. Today, after a few hours of using and a few reboots, when I provide my password in GDM, the screen turns black and gets me back to the GDM. The same with recovery mode. When I turn onto the terminal I can't see any letters but a bunch of blurred lines on the top of the screen. In recovery mode the terminal works properly.GDM also works properly. Neither graphics, nor the resolution has changed.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh 10:04 Install - No Gnome Log In - Screen Goes Blank

Aug 1, 2010

I just setup a Fujitsu s6231 lifebook with Lucid. When I boot there is no grub menu unless i press the "start" key. Then the only way i can get into the machine is by entering into recovery mode and booting in "safe graphics mode".

Everything works fine once I am able to log on the "safe graphic mode".

If i don't press the "start" key the ubuntu logo will flash for 3 seconds and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens.

Ubuntu Installation :: Gnome-wm Doesn't Start At Boot Time Automatically After Upgrading To Lucid

Feb 23, 2011

I just did a distribution upgrade on my laptop from 9.1 to 10.04, and it went fine for the most part except this issue. After it boots up, I don't see any window titles/scrollbars/borders and on clicking the icon for "Show desktop" on the bottom left, I see the following error message:

"Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."

After googling a bit, I realized that gnome-wm is not starting automatically and so I have to manually start each time to see the windows working properly. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to make sure that gnome-wm starts automatically? I know I can put it in my .bashrc but I want to do it the correct way if possible. If not, I will have to go with that workaround.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 64 Not Booting After Upgrading From 9.10 To 10.04?

May 7, 2010

I am sorry to post another thread regarding this problem, but after searching for hours in this forum and the internet, no suggested solution fixed my problem.I have 3 disks of 1TB in size. The first /dev/sda is where windows 7 64 is installed (partitioning: MBR).The second /dev/sdb is where I installed ubuntu 10.4 64bit (partitioning: GPT).The third is just for storage and is ntfs. No boot here.the grub2 is installed on mbr (/dev/sda)Also did a update-grub just to be sure, and testdisk.Grub finds all the oses and sort the to the list (including windows 7).Upon selecting Ubuntu, ubuntu boots fineBut If I select windows 7, I get a blackscreen and a blinking cursor on top left. No disk activity.I had a similar problem booting windows 7 when I had installed 9.10 in the past. The fix was to add the line:echo insmod part_msdoson the /etc/grub.d/00_header file because grub was inserting only the part_gpt module thus not recognizing the mbr partitions.

This is not a solution anymore.Trying to have a fix at least to boot into windows 7 using the windows disk, using repair, and command prompt as suggested somewhere here on the forum, did not solve anything. On the Repair dialog on start, windows see the installation, I choose fix, and it ends up that there are no problems to fix. After going to console, and issuing The BootRec commands, the /ScanOs and /RebuildBcd, say there are no windows installation. Great work Microsoft!. The installation is found on gui screen, but not on console.I did a clean install from the ubuntu 10.04 cd, just to see if solves the problem. but no. Same thing. And a stupid thing I did on update: I checked to install grub on every disk (just disks not partitions), when grub-config window showed up. Don't ask me why, I ask myself and I don't get an answer.Anyway, as I said, at least ubuntu boots fine and all disks are accessible. So, fortunately no data loss. The windows 7 option available on the grub menu ends up in a blinking cursor.Just in case, here is the results of my boot info script:

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot In Windows 2K3 After Upgrading To 10.4?

May 31, 2010

I am new to Ubuntu. I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.4 (64bit) since then I am unable to dual boot to WIN2K3 from the same HDD as my Ubuntu. I have ran some of the suggestions like: Sudo update grub and Testdisk both did not provide any errors on my partitions and my primary partition displayed in Testdisk was WIN2K3, now when I reboot and select it from the boot menu it just simply show a blinking cursor.

I am out of ideas and I need a solution to suit my configuration. I prefer not to re-install or repair any WIN2K3 OS. Can someone assist and let me know what you need from me to further understand my issue.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot Into Windows After Upgrading Grub

Apr 10, 2010

I upgraded from grub to grub2 recently, and during an update of my system, it ran the update-grub command which prompted a window asking me where to install Grub. Since I didn't know what partition to install it to and the help suggested to install it to all if I was unsure what partition to install it to - I accidentally installed Grub to my Windows partitions (both the regular and the recovery console).

So now, I can't boot into Windows - the computer just hangs after Grub with a blinking cursor and I have to perform a hard reset. Is there any way for me to restore the boot record for the windows partition without having to reinstall windows from the ground up?! I can't use Linux for my webbanking and other important tasks, so (unfortunately) I need Windows back desperately!

Debian Multimedia :: Totally Blank Screen After Upgrading To Jessie (AMD64)

Jul 21, 2015

After upgrading to Jessie (AMD64) I have a totally blank screen, not even a blinking cursor. The video card is a GeForce 6200 and I have nouveau loaded. I originally had an nvidia module in Wheezy. I decided to use the instructions at the Debian NvidiaGraphicsDriver wiki to install the NVIDIA legacy package. That was worse. The nvidia module was unloaded in the X.org log, and the screen presented as a login console.

I tediously removed all NVIDIA components, and reverted to nouveau since its report in X.org log says it supports GeForce 6 series cards. That brought me back to a totally blank screen. The nouveau module lists as "video" doing lsmod. Both gdm3 and the X server processes are up and running. Other than reporting that "nv" couldn't be loaded, there is nothing in X.org log that appear abnormal. The .xsessions_error log is troubling however, but I don't have the knowledge to interpret.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Occasional Hangs On Shutdown?

Feb 10, 2011

Shutting down sometimes hangs during the purple ubuntu shutdown screen. This especially happens when shutting down via ssh.

For example, sometimes I need to leave and wait for some operations to finish. Later, I ssh into the machine to sudo shutdown now. It tells me it's going down and disconnects me and all, but when I get home the shutdown screen is still on with a few white and red dots (those that are animated during shutdown).

When this happens, I do a slow Alt + SysRQ + R, E, I, S and U before I manually power down in order to keep my file systems happy.

Also, shutting down sometimes leaves me with a black unresponsive desktop. I can login through ssh and do a /etc/init.d/gdm restart and my desktop (or login screen) comes back.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS x64. I was running X86 before and I had the same issues with the shutdown hang. After a clean install of x64 it took a few weeks before I got the same symptoms again. The black desktop thing is new with x64.

what to do the next time this happens in order to find out why it's happening?

Ubuntu :: After Login Nothing Then The Occasional Flashing Box?

Jun 15, 2011

I installed 11.04 on a machine. After installing did the reboot and logged in. The only thing I see is the background. After I wait a few I see, what I believe to be, a dialog box to finish setup but it will only appear on screen for a fraction of a second then disappear, then about 2 seconds later it will flash again. It continues to do this with out stop. When I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twice, I am able to, for only a moment but long enough to click shutdown, see the shutdown options before it disappears and a couple of seconds later it pops back up and disappears again. It continues to do this.

What could be causing this? I have tried other things I found on this forum, but they did not work.

Ubuntu :: Blank Background In Gnome - Cannot Do Anything In GUI?

Feb 4, 2011

I was changing a few options in Compiz-Fusion today. When I saved one of the options, the X Server restarted and then suddenly, I had no taskbars or anything. I could run F2 to get a GUI Run dialog box to come up, but I can't run any GUI programs. I try GEdit, Google-chrome but nothing comes up. There's no taskbar, no AWG Dock, nothing. Just my wallpaper and I can't do anything with it.

I'm kind of annoyed that one little change can cause the whole X Server to crash and not start up. I tried booting into "Recovery Mode" but Linux doesn't automatically detect my drivers in this mode so I can't boot up into it. I've tried rebooting and I still get the wallpaper.

In TTY1 terminal, is there anything I can do to revert these changes?

As in, can I:
- Revert the changes of Compiz by somehow reaching a Compiz GUI (even though I can't open any GUI windows in GNOME)?
- Uninstall Compiz? (I tried this and it said it supported gnome-desktop..I decided not to get rid of it, any ideas? If I uninstall Compiz, will it revert and restore all the changes Compiz made?)
- Uninstall and reinstall GNOME? (if so, how can I do this?)
- Access the Compiz config through the terminal so I can perhaps find the option I set and revert it?

This is pretty urgent because I can't use my machine at all, so any help would be really really I'm still able to use the Cube and switch between workspaces (CTRL+ALT+<left/right>) which leads me to believe Compiz is working. I can also open the GUI run dialog, but just no other windows. I think Compiz must have an error and I'll have to restore to Metacity to view windows again.. any ideas?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Occasional Horizontal Lines In Video Playback?

I'm experiencing occasional flickering of horizontal lines during DVD playback. Another thread suggested turning off the de-interlacing but it is already turned off and turning it on doesn't change anything.

I have an AMD 64x2 4200+ with 3GB RAM running Ubuntu 9.10 64 with on board nVidia 6150SE video. It doesn't seem to matter which player I use (MPlayer, Movie Player, VLC, etc.), so I'm wondering if it may be some sort of video configuration problem.
