Ubuntu :: Launch Some Programs At The Boot (in Specific Places)

Nov 11, 2010

My wish is to launch some programs (chromium, pidgin and xchat on the first virtual desktop and the terminal, the file manager and geany on the second one). I also wish them to have the same size and place than they've had the last time I used them (just to keep them always at the same place). My researches haven't been successful for the moment cause the only idea I found was lxsession-edit which doesn't do exactly what I want..

Ubuntu :: KLauncher Loses Ability To Launch Programs?

Jun 13, 2011

The problem is that KLauncher seems to periodically lose the ability to launch programs. Sometimes an error dialog pops up: "Error launching /usr/share/applications/kde4/ksysguard.desktop. Either KLauncher is not running anymore, or it failed to start the application." (I verified that KLauncher is in fact still running). Other times, the pointer icon bounces and the placeholder shows up in my task bar, but then it all goes away without any error.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern as to what's running when this happens, or how much memory is in use, or what I launch, or anything else. Sometimes, if I start closing apps that are already open, then the thing I tried to launch will start up. Other times, I have to actually log out and back in before I can get anything to start. Other than that, the desktop continues to behave normally. Nothing seems to be locked up or anything. It's very strange.

General :: Adding Programs That Were Not Preinstalled

May 28, 2010

I have always had to use windows etc, of course this means I have become accustomed to the way the programs are automatically installed etc... so my question is:

Once I have found appropriate software which I would like to add to my computer, (which is Linux Compatible)... what are the steps, in the simplest terms to start using it?

To confirm, I have got to the stage where the program is on the computer but as no "window" pops up... I am fairly lost to get it from the completed downloads to actually start using it... is it an option like extract? Could you give me the basic steps.

Ubuntu :: Disabling GRUB Boot And Adding Entry To Boot.ini?

Jun 19, 2010

I want to install ubuntu 9.10 into other partition, but I want the win xp boot.ini file to configure my boot settings, not the GRUB. First I want to ask is it possible to install ubuntu, but add a boot entry in boot.ini? If not, then I know how to remove it, i found a file called ms-sys, with it I can remove GRUB. So let's say grub is no more, what should be an entry to ubuntu. When it was installed into Windows it was

Code:
c:wubildr
now what should I enter, my guess would be
Code:

Fedora :: F12 Two Versions On Boot - Cannot Launch Firefox

Dec 21, 2009

I installed f12 few days back. A pop up came which mentioned '336 new updates available' and I opted 'install only security updates'.

Now in the boot screen 3 options come instead of 2:
1. Fedora 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.i686.pae
2. Fedora 2.6.31.6-127.fc12.i686.pae
3. Windows

I am able to boot into both versions of fedora, but I cannot launch firefox it says-'your version of SQlite is too old and the application cannot run'. How do I correct the screw up. Should I re-install the whole thing....? why is it showing as 2 versions....? I installed yumex recently, is it the reason.....?

Fedora :: Can't Launch Restore Partition On Dual Boot?

Mar 10, 2011

Problem concerns HP laptop running XP and Fedora 13 and using Grub2. When installed the grub became the primary bootloader. I have been unable to successfully use any of the common fixes to reload the windows bootloaderWindows install has been unable to reload the windows bootloader. With the grub being primary I cannot access the factory restore partition. Is there a way to disable the grub and force the machine to the restore partition or use a recovery distro to run it? I have tried Knoppix but was unable to access the partition. I am still a linux wbie and understand I may be missing something simple but have yet to resolve the issue and need help. I need to reformat the machine and will run linux from an external usb. At this point all data is backed up and I am open for any options.

I have tried to access the MBR directly but fixing it is beyond my current skill level.Additional details: Initial linux install along-side XP was Mint 9. It completely wiped out the bootloader and failed to install properly. Installed Fedora and it reloaded the grub and fixed the bootloader which allowed the machine to boot and function with both OS's.

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot After Adding New Drive?

Jan 7, 2011

I've had Ubuntu for about 8 months now, and haven't really had any serious problems with it, or problems I couldn't find a solution for. This one is kind of weird and is really driving me crazy. There were two Seagate Barracuda's in my computer, and I added a third a couple days ago. At first, I was getting a grub 22 error, because they were in the wrong sata socket order, but now they're all in the order they were before, save for the third which is in SATA port 3. After the GRUB2 display, I receive a blinking cursor on a black screen. I can type whatever I want into it and nothing happens, and if I wait a few minutes it will eventually show a graphical login screen, then displays an exception and then boots to the graphical plymouth screen. Here's a section from my kern.log that shows the bit the login screen displays as well as the rest of the errors.

Code:

Ubuntu :: Boot Splash In 10.10 \ Adding A New Theme In Plymouth And Switched To That Instead, But It Still Doesn't Come Up?

I recently upgraded to 64-bit maverick (from 64-bit lucid) and I'm getting this ugly boot splash now - it's a purple screen with a very basic "ubuntu 10.10" written in terminal font and four dots underneath. I am running a dell xps m1530 with nvidia graphics card, and haven't had any trouble with the boot splash before. I have run the additional hardware drivers utility and it says I have the latest Nvidia driver already loaded apparently.I have looked around the forums and tried a few suggested solutions, like updating the initramfs with the framebuffer=y line but that didn't do anything. I also tried adding a new theme in plymouth and switched to that instead, but it still doesn't come up.
