I am trying to get a PXE boot going, and all is fine, however the ethernet card will not come up. The kernel modules are installed, and I can see them in the boot log, however it gets stuck on
eth0: no link during initialization ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
During disk boot, this also happens twice, and finally on try 3 link comes up.

I installed an application named Specto for monitoring websites and im trying to launch this on boot.i got XFCE4 and went into Application Autostart in the Session and Startup... and i cant seem to find out where to point Specto, is it in the /usr/share/applications or not cause i tried adding it from there and it wont launch on start... anyone got a rundown on this? trying to understand it but i just dont coming from windows. Not sure where applications are going at all and the file system is just a mess compared to windows so i have no control on what and where to look.Also Specto does not show up in task manager and in the Session tab of Sessions and Startup... why?

In which file can I set a root command in the boot in Ubuntu 11.04?

I have created a bootable pendrive which had been working, but when I rebooted the 'Ubuntu' splash screen was larger, blockier than normal, then I am presented with a purple screen with nothing on it. Not sure if it is frozen, cannot do anything at this stage, desktop doesn't launch.

Now in the boot screen 3 options come instead of 2:
1. Fedora 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.i686.pae
2. Fedora 2.6.31.6-127.fc12.i686.pae
3. Windows
I am able to boot into both versions of fedora, but I cannot launch firefox it says-'your version of SQlite is too old and the application cannot run'. How do I correct the screw up. Should I re-install the whole thing....? why is it showing as 2 versions....? I installed yumex recently, is it the reason.....?
Problem concerns HP laptop running XP and Fedora 13 and using Grub2. When installed the grub became the primary bootloader. I have been unable to successfully use any of the common fixes to reload the windows bootloaderWindows install has been unable to reload the windows bootloader. With the grub being primary I cannot access the factory restore partition.Is there a way to disable the grub and force the machine to the restore partition or use a recovery distro to run it? I have tried Knoppix but was unable to access the partition. I am still a linux wbie and understand I may be missing something simple but have yet to resolve the issue and need help. I need to reformat the machine and will run linux from an external usb. At this point all data is backed up and I am open for any options.
I have tried to access the MBR directly but fixing it is beyond my current skill level.Additional details: Initial linux install along-side XP was Mint 9. It completely wiped out the bootloader and failed to install properly. Installed Fedora and it reloaded the grub and fixed the bootloader which allowed the machine to boot and function with both OS's.
I'm trying to get a multi-boot setup going for a USB.
I have different vfat-32 partitions I have copied ISOs of several linux distros.
The first one I installed using unetbootin, which works great and uses syslinux, but syslinux can't boot other partitions. So, I have grub installed.
I have gotten so far as to be able to get the grub menu up, but trying to load the partition's isolinux (which is how the Linux Mint LDXE distro boots) gives me an grub error 13.

Im just wondering if it is possible to create a script that connects a computer to a 3g network.The computer is to be used by persons that is not very good at computers and that get really scared when forced to use things that are not located on the desktop.What I want to do with this script is to make a shortcut on the desktop so that it is very easy to find.Even better would be if it was possible to make the connection start automatic.Using the Network-managers auto setting isnt really reliable.Is there an foolprof way to do this? Or am I better of going back to Windows XP?

I attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy Internet connection works fine when I boot Ubuntu with the CD and it does not work when I boot from the Hard Drive. It was working then it stopped. I tried to diagnose the problem but I am not familiar with Linux.
I opened a Terminal window and entered ipconfig (don't laugh ... sadly, i've been in Windows for too long) ipconfig was something that could not be found in my terminal window so i exited.
Next it was System->Administration->Network Tools. I ping'd www.yahoo.com and it said it could not find it. hmmmm. Let's see if restarting the system will fix it.
I did a shutdown and when it came back up; same problem. Ok, i really didn't think it would magically correct itself; this is Linux after all. Windows? Well sometimes you can fix things by turning them off and on. Next, another shutdown and I rebooted with the CD instead of the Hard drive and here I sit entering this help question in.
I am guessing that a file or setting got changed in /etc/someplace and I am not even sure of that. Can anyone point me in the correct direction? I am assuming that there is a setting which is correct in the CD version that is not not correct in the HD version and somehow i need to find what it is and synchronize it with the CD version.
I have a server that NFS exports the /home directory out to other computers. On the desktop they all work great, but on a wireless laptop, this is where the problem occurs. The wireless enables after the person logs in, rendering the NFS export /home useless on the laptops.Is there anyway to have the wireless enable correctly on the boot so that NFS can mount properly at boot also?I'm using Fedora 11 (32bit) with a wireless router that has a security of WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]. I could switch to some of the older versions if necessary to get this working.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been using ubuntu since 10.04 version and configure with compiz to activate the corners, cube, etc. No problems with that. When I upgraded to 11.04 these things were not working but honestly I did not care that much and was just playing with compiz, so I was playing with an option in compiz about the size of the icons in the new 11.04 launch bar, just when I clicked it my top bar and launch bar are gone and not coming back after rebooting many times. BTW I already uninstalled compiz via terminal and the same problem is happening, maybe important for you to know (alt+f2 or other shortcuts not working except for ctr+alt+t)

installing all the packages again without comment or error, but the problem persists with exactly the same error as above.
I installed it yesterday. It worked well. I was able to log into windows without any trouble and restart into Ubuntu without a hitch.
This morning I launched Ubuntu as usual vi GRUB. I was asked to install about 135 upgrade files, which went withou an apparent challenges. I then went through the restart and noticed that there was an extra two choices in GRUB, but I just left it to launch Ubuntu automatically. Which it did.
I then messed about with the appearance settings. Noticed a some more updates were waiting which included 49 files. I went through the updating process and restart.
GRUB worked well, and I was soon loggin in with username and password.
The Ubuntu Screen became visible with the flashing horizontal line and about 3 seconds later everything froze. I waited for several minutes - I timed them - but still no progress - everything remained frozen.
I switched off the machine completely, as I knew of no other way to get out of this situation. I rebooted and when GrUB launched I booted into windows 7 with absolutely no problems.
I used restart in windows and then allowed GRUB to boot into Ubuntu. Once more I was able to log in but soon after the Ubuntu Screen appeared and the horizontal line flashed for a few seconds, everything froze. This time I waited five minutes before switching off the machine by disconnecting at the mains.
I am now using windwos 7 to make contact
I am running Kubuntu 10.04 and i want to make some icons on the desktop to launch various telnet sessions. So i make a .sh using vi test.sh and then put in telnet 180.9.x.xx and save and quit. Then i chmod 777 it to make it executable and then moved it to my Desktop folder. But when i double click or right click and open with konsole nothing happens. I know it is probably something stupid which i have overlooked but when i have done this in Ubuntu in the past it has worked.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi've been looking for an answer to this for a few days now before i decided to post. i have a simple script that works perfectly if launched manually from an xterm window. the script has been already been chmod +x.
i have my account set to autologin to an xterm session. i have symlinks in rc2.d and the script itself in init.d. i can't find any clear explanation of where i need to put my script to it launches itself right after my account logs into an xterm session. i can ./script after my xterm session starts and everything works fine but i just cannot find where to put it so it launches after my acct auto logins.
I did a install of 9.10 on a Lenovo T61p a few weeks back. The install went seamlessly and everything was running along just fine, then suddenly, I'm having the problem that every time I go to launch a new window, it takes 30 - 40 seconds for the window to launch. Once the window is launched, performance seems normal, with one exception. When I go to launch Nautilus from the "Home Folder" menu under "Places", it takes 30 - 40 seconds to launch the window, then another 10 -15 seconds for the folder items to appear. If I click to descend into a folder, it takes 10 - 15 seconds for the folder contents to appear. This stuff was all instantaneous.
