2. I currently have two hard drives one has / and /home on it. The ssd will be added and ubuntu installed prior to reformatting the drive with / and /home.

Ubuntu :: Adding Intel Compiler To Bash?

May 4, 2010

I'm still a beginner in Linux world, and I would like to learn something more about bash. I installed recently the Intel Fortran compiler. I know where the executable of the compiler is, but I don't know how to make it as a global command, the path is:

/opt/intel/Compiler/11.1/072/bin/intel64/ifort

I would like to write "ifort" in whatever directory and get the compile to do its job. What I know is that this is done by bash. Could someone please explain how this is done?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xorg-edgers - When Does Experimental Become Mainstream

Jul 6, 2011

I started using Ubuntu Karmic on my old laptop w/ATI GPU and quickly realized the benefits of the xorg-edgers PPA. I understand that these packages are considered bleeding-edge, and do sometimes cause breakage. For me though , the pluses have vastly outweighed the minuses, which were negligible. I can't use any proprietary drivers w/my old card, and 3d is basically non-functional with the standard open ATI drivers. With xorg-edgers, I can use Compiz, play OpenArena and Quake Live.

Now after over a year and a half, 15 kernels and nearly 4 releases later, I'm really not sure how much progress has been made with the mainstream open ATI drivers, though I have been enjoying 3d with xorg-edgers. I really don't know how much of the bleeding-edge performance is due to the drivers, the kernel, xserver, or other libraries. I'm just looking forward to the day when my GPU is fully functional OOTB. how packages go from experimental to mainstream? Speculate on when open ATI development will be complete, and will that be all that is required for properly accelerated graphics?

Ubuntu :: Disabling GRUB Boot And Adding Entry To Boot.ini?

Jun 19, 2010

I want to install ubuntu 9.10 into other partition, but I want the win xp boot.ini file to configure my boot settings, not the GRUB. First I want to ask is it possible to install ubuntu, but add a boot entry in boot.ini? If not, then I know how to remove it, i found a file called ms-sys, with it I can remove GRUB. So let's say grub is no more, what should be an entry to ubuntu. When it was installed into Windows it was

Code:
c:wubildr
now what should I enter, my guess would be
Code:
m:ootgrubmenu.lst

Ubuntu Installation :: Port USB Install To An 80GB USB Drive Had Kicking Around?

May 28, 2011

Now that we got that out of the way, here's the problem and I hope someone can help me. Before posting, I read everything I could find here about partitioning in gparted (at least what I think applied to my situation). I'm pretty sure that this has an easy answer (or I hope it does).

I originally installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB stick to try and retrieve files from a failed NAS drive. That worked pretty well a very smart guy who posted instructions on how to do the hex editing necessary to realign and enter a reiserfs disk) so I decided I'd jump in and play with Ubuntu. I decided to port my USB install to an 80GB USB drive I had kicking around, but the install didn't actually take the whole disk the way I thought it would, it only took the 7.xGB from the USB drive.

I didn't notice (I know, dumb) and then I did the 11.04 upgrade to it. I'm trying to recapture the other 65GB of unused space via gparted, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to extend the original boot partition (I have no /home partition). i tried to format the unused space to ext4, but no matter what i do I can't expand that original partition (I can shrink it if that matters). Just to be clear, I booted from a live cd 10.10, and I'm running gparted on the unmounted USB drive. The boot partition should not be active.

My screen shots capability is not working correctly right now, but I'll post one if I can. I can only get a full screen shot, and this is on a 30" monitor.. I just want the active window the /dev/sdj1 partition is on the left (7.11GiB) witha boot flag, then the Ext/Swap at 377MiB each /dev/sdj2 and 5) and then another 68,85 GiB partition, currently formatted to Ext4 on the right labeled /dev/sdj3. No other partitions. I can extend the Ext/swap, but not the boot partition.

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot After Adding New Drive?

Jan 7, 2011

I've had Ubuntu for about 8 months now, and haven't really had any serious problems with it, or problems I couldn't find a solution for. This one is kind of weird and is really driving me crazy. There were two Seagate Barracuda's in my computer, and I added a third a couple days ago. At first, I was getting a grub 22 error, because they were in the wrong sata socket order, but now they're all in the order they were before, save for the third which is in SATA port 3. After the GRUB2 display, I receive a blinking cursor on a black screen. I can type whatever I want into it and nothing happens, and if I wait a few minutes it will eventually show a graphical login screen, then displays an exception and then boots to the graphical plymouth screen. Here's a section from my kern.log that shows the bit the login screen displays as well as the rest of the errors.

Ubuntu :: Boot Splash In 10.10 \ Adding A New Theme In Plymouth And Switched To That Instead, But It Still Doesn't Come Up?

I am running a dell xps m1530 with nvidia graphics card, and haven't had any trouble with the boot splash before. I have run the additional hardware drivers utility and it says I have the latest Nvidia driver already loaded apparently.I have looked around the forums and tried a few suggested solutions, like updating the initramfs with the framebuffer=y line but that didn't do anything. I also tried adding a new theme in plymouth and switched to that instead, but it still doesn't come up.

Ubuntu :: Adding The Panel - Gnome Crashed And Computer Won't Boot Correctly

Dec 8, 2010

I have a desktop computer running Linux Mint 9 with the Gnome desktop (not sure what version -- though by default Mint 9 comes with Gnome 2.30). Last night I tried adding a panel to the desktop by right-clicking on the existing bottom panel and selecting "New Panel". Please note that I've already got another panel at the top of the desktop on the left side on autohide and no expand.

When I added another panel, it placed a normal panel on the right side of the screen without any problems. When I right-clicked on the new right-side panel and selected "Properties", I changed the orientation to "top" (where there was already a panel, if you remember). After that moment, it seemed like the entire desktop environment crashed. Everything was completely unresponsive -- the only thing moving on the screen was the mouse. I couldn't do anything with the gui, not even shut the computer down.

Since the gui shutdown wasn't working, I switched to a different tty screen, logged in, and ran a shutdown command with the option to reboot. The computer shut down fine, and when it woke back up, the same problem was still there: Nothing loaded on the screen except for the background image and the mouse, which was still able to move but nothing else. I have the computer set up to automatically log me in, so I know it's not crashing before the user prefs are being loaded...

After restarting it again and getting the same result, I switched to a different tty screen, logged in, and tried messing around with stuff to no avail. I did notice, however, that the computer was becoming evermore sluggish, and something printed on the screen stating that a program had been terminated because of "not enough memory". It seemed like some process was consuming WAY too much RAM by itself or a program was accidentally forkbombing the computer. ...All because I added a panel...?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Boot With Intel Graphics Without Monitor Switched On?

May 12, 2010

i'm trying since ubuntu karmic to set up a xorg.conf for a special purpose. I've a htpc connected to my tv. Intel GMA 4500, DVI->HDMI-cable connected, Lucid Lynx installed. When the machine boots with the TV powered on, everything is perfect. xrandr reports all valid modes on output "DP2". Without the TV powerd on, Lucid starts in the low graphics mode, with the funny zenity-message. So far, i managed to disable all useless outputs (VGA1, HDMI1, DP1, HDMI2), leaving DP2 enabled. I managed this by assigning outputs to monitors and adding Option "Ignore" "True" to the corresponding monitor-sections. My only remaining problem is, that the intel-driver reports no connected monitor on output DP2. The TV is connected, but shut off. Has anyone got a hint to tell the driver to ignore the presence of a monitor?
