Ubuntu Installation :: Launch Utilities And Other Programs That Have .exe Extensions By Double Clicking The .exe File?
Apr 27, 2010
I recently installed ubuntu 9.10. I have been trying to launch utilities and other programs that have .exe extensions by double clicking the .exe file. Each time I attempt this I get the following error message in archive manager:
First thing I do is double click the top of the window to enlarge it and when I do that the window enlarges correctly, but it also lunches an app like the double click lags behind to click on an app after the window enlages, im using the 64bit version.
If u dnt knw wat I mean please try it out and tell me how I can fix this, just double click a sized window to make it fullscreen and tell me wat happens.
I also would like to knw if maybe its the fact that im using the 64bit version and that its glitchy.
Big issue for me with rhythmbox. If I attempt to open a song in one of my folders it wont automatically play them. It will first add the song to the library. Than I have to manually find it in rhytmbox or double click it again. Hasnt it been the normal behavior in EVERY other music application to play a song by double clicking it once? Is there a way to change this setting in Rhythmbox?
standard Linux installation utilities split the root file-system and the home file-system on two separate but relatively equal-sized partitions? For example, when I put fedora on an 80GB disk, it automatically gave the root file-system 32GB and home 30GB and the swap 8GB of space. However, since my home file-system has a directory with 28GB of files in it, why is my root file-system reading 100% usage? Is the home FS overlaid on top of the root FS? Is there an advantage to doing this? I just made a boot partition (50mb or so), a root partition (90% of the disk space) and a swap (4%-5% disk space).
I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. It was a fresh install of kubuntu, although I did leave a windows partition on there elsewhere. Grub messed up but I fixed that with a small text edit. Anyway, when I click on a file, i.e. Open Office writer or Calc, the computer thinks about it for like 60 seconds and then finally Open Office (version 3.2.0)finishes opening the file. It also does this while saving some files. It did not do this this version 9.10 which really amazes me. I have deleted OOo and reinstalled it several times and nothing helps. All other file handling seems normal, and it is a fast newer computer with a lot of memory.
Whenever im logged into my Ubutu Desktop at home remotely from work i cannot seem to launch Firefox by clicking on any of the shortcuts.Seems the only thing that lets me lauch it is by opening a command windown and typing "sudo firefox".
when i click my mouse on something, it sometimes registers as two clicks. it doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to be annoying. for example, when i click a videos video to pause it, it often opens into fullscreen (which you normally click twice to do). also, in the url bar of chromium, i can't select the entire url by clicking. i now need to use ctrl+a. that's also because when i try to select the url, the highlight randomly disappears.
if i have multiple windows open, my click on the first "x" of the top-most window also closes the next window. i'm on linux mint 10. it's not really important, but it drives me crazy sometimes when my mouse doesn't work the way i want it to.
I am trying to install on Ubuntu Netbook on my MSI Wind U123. I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook and followed the proper directions to create an installation USB. During installation, I got up to the step where it tells me to have: atleast 2.5GB available, make sure power cord is plugged in, and that I am connected to the internet. When I click on, "Forward" to continue the installation, it just hang/freezes.
I have similar problem when trying to install JoliCloud. When installing JoliCloud, I get up to step 3, where it asks about the keyboard. When I click "Forward", it doesn't do anything, it just hangs. I tired using multiple different USB drive, and also downloaded ISO file again to ensure the file wasn't corrupted.*
Once more I am playing with Linux. First it was Mandrake on an 386/33 box. Then Ubuntu 8.04 on an Athlon 64 box. And now Ubuntu 10.04 on an Athlon 64 Black. In Windows, there are beaucoup utilities, such as disk cleanup, dupe file finder, et cetera. I already know to NOT defrag a Linux HDD. Is there a need for any of the more common Windows disk utilities in Linux? FWIW - If I don't run Norton Utilities, CCleaner, and Glary Utilities regularly in Win7, I endup with gigabytes (yes, gigabytes) of trash files.
I really don't like the programs listing that are on the left side is their any way to move them back into the top bar like I could with 10.04 ? was just much quicker to start/launch programs now I got to hunt through the long list on the left side and the slider is so slow on top of it all getting frustrated now with 11.04
I installed an application named Specto for monitoring websites and im trying to launch this on boot.i got XFCE4 and went into Application Autostart in the Session and Startup... and i cant seem to find out where to point Specto, is it in the /usr/share/applications or not cause i tried adding it from there and it wont launch on start... anyone got a rundown on this? trying to understand it but i just dont coming from windows. Not sure where applications are going at all and the file system is just a mess compared to windows so i have no control on what and where to look. Also Specto does not show up in task manager and in the Session tab of Sessions and Startup... why?
I have a favorite REXX program called fv2. When I was a Windows user I had an icon for fv2 on the Quick Launch bar. Click that icon, and the program ran. Now, as a Linux (Ubuntu) user it is necessary to go through several steps to run fv2.
1) Launch a terminal by clicking on the terminal icon at the top of the screen. What's that area called? The GNOME panel? 2) Enter: ~/Desktop/RexxScripts 3) Enter: regina fv2
I run fv2 several times per day and would really like to have the convenience of a clickable icon.
My wish is to launch some programs (chromium, pidgin and xchat on the first virtual desktop and the terminal, the file manager and geany on the second one). I also wish them to have the same size and place than they've had the last time I used them (just to keep them always at the same place). My researches haven't been successful for the moment cause the only idea I found was lxsession-edit which doesn't do exactly what I want..
The problem is that KLauncher seems to periodically lose the ability to launch programs. Sometimes an error dialog pops up: "Error launching /usr/share/applications/kde4/ksysguard.desktop. Either KLauncher is not running anymore, or it failed to start the application." (I verified that KLauncher is in fact still running). Other times, the pointer icon bounces and the placeholder shows up in my task bar, but then it all goes away without any error.
There doesn't seem to be any pattern as to what's running when this happens, or how much memory is in use, or what I launch, or anything else. Sometimes, if I start closing apps that are already open, then the thing I tried to launch will start up. Other times, I have to actually log out and back in before I can get anything to start. Other than that, the desktop continues to behave normally. Nothing seems to be locked up or anything. It's very strange.
I have a directory of a load of files without extensions. I know what the filetype should be, so is there any way of batch renaming the files to append a given extension onto it. i.e. text would be renamed as text.txt?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Netbook).I need to associate ram file extension to realplayer. First time I opened a ram file I choosed the default player, Reproductor de peliculas (I think Movie player in english). Now when I choose Open with Realplayer and remember the application for this extension it opens the archive but it does not remember for the next times. It seems to be a little bug. How can I do it manually? Where is the association config file for file extensions?
I'm using Opensuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4. When using the task switcher, only programs open on the current desktop are visible. I think it would be handy to have the Launch Bar work in the same fashion.
Is it possible to have the Launch Bar only show programs open on the current desktop?
Trouble is that ROBOTNAME is different in each of the hundred and fifty files. To make it harder, there are other gif filenames on these pages that I do not want to change. I only want the extensions to change if the address prefix is 'images/robopix/web/'. Is there any way to do this with a quick program/sed command rather than manually editing a hundred and fifty files?
i was just wondering if anybody knows of a command that i can run in the terminal to HIDE file extensions.I would apretiate this command and i dont mind if it is for ubuntu or windows.
I want to rename some image file extensions from upper case to lower case but renaming all the images in all directories and subdirectories. the following code works if I am inside the folder but how do I make it work recursively?
Code: for f in *.JPG; do mv $f `basename $f .JPG`.jpg; done;
Does anyone know of a way to perform a search for multiple file extensions at once in Gnome? I know that M$ Windows Explorer had this capability, but I'm just not sure how to do it in Gnome, or if it's possible. I just want to be able to perform searches for Video, Music, and Document file types, without having to perform a separate search for each file extension. Example: When doing a search for Video file types (.avi,.mp4,.mov,.wma, etc.), I would like to do one search for all files that have these file extensions, instead of doing one search for .avi files, a second search for .mp4 files, another for .mov files, etc.
Basically, I have a selection of .rdp shortcuts to various machines, but they are considered the file type "plain text document (text/plain)" so if I change it to open with to tsclient, all of that file type opens with tsclient. And if I change it to gedit, all the rdp files open with gedit. Is there a way to create a custom file type dependent on the extension rdp, or is there a way to set tsclient to open by extension rather than filetype?
I am doing a migration and where i face problem with few file formats . I have the list of acceptable file formats , now i need to find the rest of the file formats other than the acceptable file formats. is there any tool available for this ? or can some give me the VBA macro .. My VBA macro works to find the file extension in a particular folder but the problem is its ending when the count increases to 65000 (excel limit). How do i use If condition here to avoid the acceptable format and give me unique file formats .
Just recently installed the latest Ubuntu on my laptop and working perfectly. I have installed and configured LAMP but unable to figure out how to hide php and html file extensions when visiting a URL. I have enabled mod_rewrite via sudo a2enmod rewrite. Can this be accomplished globally rather than using a htaccess file?
GNU/Linux kernel 2.6, Slackware. VIM - Vi IMproved 7.1 Huge version without GUI. When I quit an editing sesion vim creates a backup file with the same name as that of the edited file but with a '~' appended. I would like the name for the backup file to be the following: same base name as that of the edited file and edited file extension replaced by 'bak'. Example:
Input file//////////////backup file after editing ----------//////////////------------------------- foo.txt/////////////////foo.txt~ foo.txt/////////////////foo.bak
The first line corresponds to what vim now does. The second one is what I want vim to do.
so that: *.odb files are opened by default with libreoffice base *.org files (just org files not plain text files) are opened by default with emacs
For some reason I can not figure out how to proceed.
As far as I know - i.e. for what I have been reading in the documentation - the default application for a given MIME-type is specified by writing into the group [Default Applications] in the mimeapps.list file
