I am using ubuntu inside windows vista but when I first installed I used very low memory with it. I seen and read some tutorials about how to expand it through GParted but seems it's not working or not allowing me to expand.

The problem is that there may still be some system files running in the background that prevent all of your free space from consolidating. For some reason, I didn't find many partitioning guides that mention this.
If you find at Step 11 that your shrink space is still abnormally small, what you need to do is go back and open PerfectDisk. With "Consolidate Free Space" selected in the drop down box, click the "Boot Time" button. This allows PerfectDisk to consolidate free space while your hard drive is offline. Once this is done, go back to Step 10 and everything should work from there!
I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows Vista on my laptop. I would like to be able to access the File System in Windows because I need to use iTunes to sync my iPod, while I actually get most of my Music in Ubuntu.

I get as far as "Allocate drive space" but there are no partitions to choose from. I currently have Windows and Linux Mint on the hard drive and want to install Ubuntu in the same partition as Mint to overwrite it.

I now have a problem, because my Windows Vista has been wrapped up in the Linux partitioning system. I know it is located at dev/sda1 and that it is an HPFS/NTFS filetype, create a dual boot drive on my notebook, so that I can happily play with both systems. I am newbie, so the instructions should be as clear and simple as possible.

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

My router has 4 ethernet ports so I have 1 hooked up to a network hub where I have 2 computers running windows xp and 1 running windows 95, on my other router port I have a desktop using ubuntu 11.04 and I have 2 windows 7 laptops and 1 ubuntu 11.04 laptop connecting wirelessly. All of the computers can see each other in my network map except for the ones running ubuntu. I can successfully ping every computer on my network from every computer without fail (even the ubuntu ones). The weird thing is that my ubuntu computers can see and use files from all of my windows computers but still nothing can see the ubuntu computers. I have set up samba to no avail and when I open file sharing and try to enable it on ubuntu it comes up with "this feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system." I have done clean installs of ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10 on both ubuntu computers and kept them up to date but the same problem persists. I have tried to do the same steps above with all of my computers wired but still nothing.

My Ubuntu partions /dev/sda4 extended, which contains a /dev/sda5 ext4 and a /dev/sda6 ntfs partition.
Vista is on /dev/sda2 ntfs. I would like to wipe vista out, turn off dual boot (if possible) and use the space taken by vista to extend my /dev/sda6 ntfs partition in ubuntu.
I installed the live CD version of fedora (dual boot with vista) on my laptop. After I connected to the internet the updates downloaded and all went well. however when i restarted at the boot screen I found two instances of fedora such as
Fedora(2.6.27.9-159.fc10.i686)
Fedora(2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686)

The "other" is vista. I am wondering if this is OK or whether I have two fedora. If so i would like to remove one of them to save disk space.
I have just over 20GB of empty space on C:. When I click it under disk-management, the window comes up and says I can only resize it 192 MB less than what it is. But I have 20GB free. Any ideas on what is wrong? I also have this odd 9.56GB partition that is empty. DM says it's "EISA configuration"...whatever that is. I am planning to allocate about 10GB for F11 if this pans out ok.

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.
Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.
Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).
However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

I have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows

What can I do to recover my windows back?
I would like to replace Windows Vista with Windows XP without uninstalling my Ubuntu partition. I use ubuntu 90% of the time, but would like to have XP for games and for my printer. Is there a way to just overwrite Vista and not Ubuntu? I booted my XP disk and it came up with many different partitions, 4. I wasn't sure what my Vista one was named or which one I should overwrite.

I have a 4GB USB stick and want to use it to do a clean install of Vista instead of the preconfigured Vista that is on a Recovery partition on the harddrive.
How to install Vista from USB but unable to find one with directions on how to copy the DVD or source files for Vista onto the USB within Ubuntu and still make it bootable.

I messed up my computer and now I can't boot into Windows Vista or Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala (I have yet to acquire a 10.04 Lucid Lynx disc, my connection's too slow to download and I'm apparently ineligible to request any more CDs through shipit). I think I accidentally deleted Grub 2 as I get the grub rescue> prompt and my 9.10 LiveCD no longer works properly (it says "Authentication Error" and then goes to the log-in screen).
