Ubuntu :: Networking Windows 7/vista/xp / "this Feature Cannot Be Enabled Because The Required Packages Are Not Installed On Your System"?

I have my home network set up like so. My router has 4 ethernet ports so I have 1 hooked up to a network hub where I have 2 computers running windows xp and 1 running windows 95, on my other router port I have a desktop using ubuntu 11.04 and I have 2 windows 7 laptops and 1 ubuntu 11.04 laptop connecting wirelessly. All of the computers can see each other in my network map except for the ones running ubuntu. I can successfully ping every computer on my network from every computer without fail (even the ubuntu ones). The weird thing is that my ubuntu computers can see and use files from all of my windows computers but still nothing can see the ubuntu computers. I have set up samba to no avail and when I open file sharing and try to enable it on ubuntu it comes up with "this feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system." I have done clean installs of ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10 on both ubuntu computers and kept them up to date but the same problem persists. I have tried to do the same steps above with all of my computers wired but still nothing.
I would like to enable personal file sharing so I can access my laptop (hp Mini laptop w/ ubuntu) from my mac mini (OSX 10.4.11), but the message I get in PFS dialogue box is "This feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system".
If I do System-Preferences-Personal File Sharing it tells me that I can't enable sharing over the network because "the required packages are not installed on your system". It doesn't tell me WHAT packages I need to install!
I have Red Hat Enterprise 5 and am trying to resize a partition. I am using the resize command within "parted" and am getting the following error - Error: File system has an incompatible feature enabled.
I installed the minimal-command line system from the kubuntu CD on my laptop, which is guess is roughly around 200mb after installation. I wish to install a Desktop Environment preferably KDE and I wanted to know how and where do I begin from? Do I need to have a working XORG prior to installation of KDE and do I also need to install Window mangers and e.t.c? What all packages/libraries and components do I need to install first? I'm really not sure where should I begin from.
Initially what I am trying to do is to have working GUI system,then later on I can install rest of the packages and software that I need, like office, GPU drivers, browser etc. Secondly,for a minimal KDE system,what metapackages are to be installed from this site? I believe kdebase, kdebase-runtime, kdebase-workspace are required. [URL]
This affects any version of Linux I have managed to put my hands on, 32 bit as well as 64 bit, except XenServer 5.6. This does not affect Windows 7 x64, GRUB bootloaders and FreeDOS/MSDOS based boot CDs. Also, Linux boots fine with the BIOS IOMMU feature disabled.What happens is that the 64-bit Linux install, bootCD, installCD, liveCD or USB hangs almost immediately after GRUB with naught but a blinking cursor at the upper left corner. Some liveCDs manage to show some kind of boot splash before it hangs. USB peripherals such as the mouse and the USB stick gets severed at the moment of the hang. The num-lock led is on but the keyboard is irresponsive to *-lock toggles.
In the 32-bit version it takes a little longer before the hang and the USB peripherals stay on at the event of the hang, but the keyboard is irrespnsive in the same manner. It also spits out error messages.
I have installed ubuntu 11.04 using wubi with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The operating system works fine. Althoughwhen I boot and choose linux I get an error message during boot which stays forever. I have to shut down using power button and start again when it boots fine.
Another problem is when I restart from ubuntu it restarts back to the desktop but when I shut down, it does not shut down the computer. Stays on with blank screen forever. I am attaching the image of latest error I received on boot.
I am trying to install openSuse 11.2 on my laptop which has Windows Vista installed. I don't want to delete my Windows Vista that is installed. provide instructions on how to do this?
i've fedora 15 & windows vista installed on hard disk partitions.i can access windows files from fedora but how to view fedora files when i'm working on windows???
I'm currently running 9.10 and am anticipating upgrading to 10.04 when it is released next week. I am however, running several packages from PPA's that were simply not working well at the versions included with 9.10 (I know specifically the 64-bit version of Flash and Wine are setup this way).
Since these installs are out of the scope of the official Ubuntu sources, how are these handled when I upgrade? More importantly, since some of these packages were just installed as a temporary fix until 10.04 came out, for some of them I'd like to remove the PPA version and reinstall the default version (since for several of them the 10.04 version has caught up to where it needs to be). Is there any way to identify all packages installed from PPA's on the system?
I just installed CentOS 5.4 Final on a 64 bit system. After install, I found a lot of 32 bit packages are also installed. Is it necessary for a pure 64 bit system to run (let's say, I will never want to run any 32 bit app on this system), or is it something I could have avoided during install?
Every time I install ubuntu I have to reinstall all the software from the software center and so. Now I already installed all software I need for this moment. Is there a way to take source files of those (installed) packages and save them some where else in order to reinstall them if i needed next time without need to INTERNET connection ???
Another question I wanna know about: How can I take a backup of my system as whole in order to get back to it if some problem happened. I used to use Acronis True Image and its alternatives to make a disk image. Is there is some thing similar in linux ?? is there better options ??
i have a vaio, with a nvidia geforce 330m. i upgraded from 10.4 to 10.10, using the same driver i had before (256.44, form the nvidia web site) and following the same instructions i found useful the previous time [URL]. my problem: now my login has no graphic interface: i am displayed this error:

I am using ubuntu inside windows vista but when I first installed I used very low memory with it. I seen and read some tutorials about how to expand it through GParted but seems it's not working or not allowing me to expand.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC running Vista Home Basic. I installed to run as a dual boot but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. I have tried to run the recovery disk for Vista and it errors out also..
Install One : Installed Debian Squeeze onto my laptop using the netinst cd. During installation, I did not have access to the internet and installed "Standard System" during tasksel.
Install Two : Installed Debian Sqeeze onto my desktop using the same netinst cd. However, this time I had connected the desktop to my router during installation. Similary installed "Standard System".
Both system later installed with KDE and working fine. Noticed that immediate after installation of the "Standard System", my desktop had more files installed eg. the exim package. Why the extra packages (eg exim) are installed? Are they actually required?
I have a dead system that was running Debian Linux (lenny). I can boot into emergency mode, but nothing else. I will likely have to reinstall Debian. I've read lots of things online about how to get a list of currently installed packages. Which is fine and dandy if the system is working and I can log into it. I'm basically wanting to extract such a list from a hard drive containing an installation I can't log into normally. I can access the filesystem just fine, and nothing related to aptitude has been damaged.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows Vista on my laptop. I would like to be able to access the File System in Windows because I need to use iTunes to sync my iPod, while I actually get most of my Music in Ubuntu.
I have just downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 and am trying to install it on a dual boot system with Windows Vista. I get as far as "Allocate drive space" but there are no partitions to choose from. I currently have Windows and Linux Mint on the hard drive and want to install Ubuntu in the same partition as Mint to overwrite it.

When i click apply system wide, it asks me for my root password wich i provide and then it asks me for this other password, with this message: Privileges are required to change gconf system values. What is this? is there a way around it?
I have an HP Compaq nx6235 Notebook, which was happily running Windows Vista Home Premium, until I finally got around to loading Linux openSUSE 11.1 from a DVD issued with a magazine last year. I now have a problem, because my Windows Vista has been wrapped up in the Linux partitioning system. I know it is located at dev/sda1 and that it is an HPFS/NTFS filetype, create a dual boot drive on my notebook, so that I can happily play with both systems. I am newbie, so the instructions should be as clear and simple as possible.
I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).
i am sort of a n00b at *nix, and i wanted to install KSB26 on my centos 5.3 install.I downloaded the file. and extracted it.I modified the install.sh in the file to point to /usr/src/kernels/.I run the installation, but it shows many errors telling me to run make oldconfig and make prepare on the src.I run that but i still get the same error and installtion does not occur.Do i need any special packages installed?
I was asked in a interview what are the rpm packages that are mandatory to install in order for the system to work. When for exemple the instalation program lauchs what are the required rpm packages that if only install them.. the system will work.
i have been working with fedora for a long time because i was unable to get anjuta 3 working on ubuntu as well as GTK+ 3,facing a huge list of problems after reinstalling it around 3 times and unable to get my new mouse working on GNOME. My question is will anjuta 3.,GTK+ 3.0 as well as all the required packages be able to run/installed on ubuntu?
I keep on getting this red " - " icon on my panel and I try to perform the upgrade it prompts me to do. But it says that there are 3 broken packages i need to fix with the "broken filter". How do I fix this so I can upgrade?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop.And I am going to install mediaplayer from its "*.deb" file, But it requires a lot of other packages and each of those packages needs others and so on.Since I do not have internet connection on my Ubuntu and my internet connection is in Win XP, so I should download these packages and then check them in my Ubuntu and see what other packages it needs and download them and so on.
It is a very time consuming task. If I could find out what are all the required packages I could download all of them at once and then I could install them by "sudo dpkg -i *".Therefore I am wondering if there is a way to know which packages are the required ones for a typical package, my work would be much more easier.
