General :: Switching From Vista - On Sony Vaio ?
Dec 18, 2010I have decided to switch from Vista to Linux on my Sony Vaio and wanted to know the best way to do it.
Basically i want to set my laptop like this because i want to get involved with wireless security testing.
I am thinking about taking the Backtrack wifu course http://www.offensive-security.com/on...backtrack-wifu.
Now obviously it seems i will need Backtrack, so what is the correct way to go about installing? Should i try and purchase a cd to install or is there better ways?
Cannot wait to move away from Vista. I think it has been making me ill. ps.. i also want to learn BASH and Perl, so that is basically going to be the setup.
General :: Losing Wireless Connection After Switching Back To Vista OS
Feb 17, 2011I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed. I am very new to Linux. I am having a problem connecting to wireless network when I reboot to Vista OS. When I am using Ubuntu, it works fine. I have to plug in the LAN cable in order to connect to internet. When I try to connect to wireless network, I don't see any networks at all. My WiFi switch is ON. I keep switching back and forth between Vista OS and Linux.Narendra

Mar 18, 2011I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Nov 18, 2009i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Oct 14, 2010I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.
Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

Jun 27, 2011I was running 11.04 as my main OS untill I installed Win Xp Pro. 50 GiB Ubuntu and 100 GiB Win Xp Pro. Now when ever I boot my computer (Acer Extensa 5620) it AUTOMATICALLY goes into the Win Xp Pro OS. So I have no idea how to access all of my Ubuntu files and programs etc. This is a really big problem as I have yet to hook up Win Xp Pro to the internet. It is an older OS and it has made things very difficult. So I really need to be able to switch OS partitions.

Ubuntu :: Switching From Windows Server 2003 To 11.04
Jun 1, 2011I am switching from Windows Server 2003 to Ubuntu 11.04.
These are two different machines, the Windows Server has 2 2TB Hard drives in it, that are setup as a RAID 1. The data on the drives is irreplaceable. I've scoured the internet for about two weeks, trying to find the best solution. It seems like everyone else had a slightly different setup, or the was no solution.
The Ubuntu Server has a 40GB SSD in it. I just installed a 2TB Hard drive (same make and model of the two in the Windows Server) and made the filesystem for it ext3.
First thing I did was just throw the 2 2TB Hard Drives in the new server, and tried to set them up as a software RAID. After it prompt me to erase the drives, I strayed away from that idea.
My end goal is having Ubuntu machine completely replace the Windows machine, so I'll need to setup Samba (which I'm sure I can figure that part out).
How can I get all the data off the 2TB Hard Drives that are using NTFS onto a RAID in the Ubuntu machine with an ext3 filesystem?

Feb 13, 2011I've switched from Ubuntu Hardy to Xubuntu using the terminal. The only problem is I can't find my WinXP partition any more. In Ubuntu I used to mount it by going to 'Places' menu and clicking the folder icon. It's now gone. I can't see the icon in Xubuntu.Been reading other threads trying to find out what to do, but I'm relatively new to Linux. I can't find the folder under /media either. Also, I don't know what types my partitions are. Is this important? I figured I could access my Win folder in Xubuntu the way I would in Ubuntu.

I modified /usr/share/xfce-mcs-plugins/shortcuts/defaults.xml and added Ctrl+Alt+Tab shortcut to trigger a terminal command "wmctrl -k on", then i could see the desktop, but failed to switch window focus. General :: Switching Between Windows Would Cause A Network Adapter To Stop Being Recognized?
Feb 15, 2011I am using Linux and Windows 7 on the same machine and my on-board NIC is functional under both. However, the weirdest thing happens when I browse the internet under Linux and then return to Windows; my NIC stops being recognized! This happens under Windows but also in Linux when I return! This problem is then easily fixed by resetting the CMOS, but inevitably occurs again. Why does this happen? Update The CMOS reset works but is not necessary for me. Shutting down and unplugging the power cord works as well.

Jun 13, 2010I'm a long time user of CentOS 5 w/KDE 3.5. I have always had this problem to various degrees no matter what installation of CentOS 5 I'm currently on. This same hardware does not exhibit the same symptoms with another OS.The problem is I regularly have many konsole instances open. I alt-tab between them frequently. Inevitably a random alt-tab will freeze the keyboard and the mouse won't be able to click anything although I can move the mouse cursor around. I can't type anything. It seems to have some sort of timeout and it always come back to responsiveness.
I alleviated this problem (I think) by switching keyboards, installing the nvidia driver instead of the nv driver, shutting down all non-essential services.I have seen these symptoms on every system I have installed CentOS 5 where KDE 3.5 was also installed. Very different hardware setups each time.Has anyone else run into similar symptoms?I'm surprised that it's just CentOS 5 w/KDE 3.5 that exhibits this behaviour on the same hardware where other operating systems (gentoo, suse, etc.) did not exhibit these symptoms.
General :: Php - Text Editor That Can Save Locally And Via FTP For Switching From EditPlus On Windows
May 18, 2010I just switched from Windows to Linux. I've been using EditPlus for many years mainly because of it's ability to save locally, and then send the file via FTP, with easy keyboard shortcuts (ctrl-s to save, ctrl-alt-s to ftp).
I also need syntax highlighting and basic code editing features. Is there anything for Linux that can do this? I don't want to run EditPlus via Wine
I need to save locally and remotely simultaneously, or at least with a few keystrokes. I already know of plenty of ways to edit remote files.
General :: When Switching From Mint To Windows - 70% Of The Time My Wireless Stops Working
Feb 5, 2011I am currently dual booting between Linux Mint 10, and Windows Vista SP2. Wireless works fine in both these OSes, but when I quit Mint and load Windows, 70% of the time my wireless stops working.
ie, it does not detect any wireless networks nearby, althought there are tons of them.
Restarting the wireless device doesnt help, I have to restart my computer at least 4 times for wireless to start working again.
And as of now, my wireless in Linux Mint has stopped working.

Is there a way to just overwrite Vista and not Ubuntu? I booted my XP disk and it came up with many different partitions, 4. I wasn't sure what my Vista one was named or which one I should overwrite.
