I have a dual boot system using ubuntu, 7, and vista. I want to get rid of vista. I already tried to use my recovery discs but they never give me an option as per what to partition and what not to, and it comes with vista and seven. I really need the space and can't currently afford a portable hard drive.

i have a desktop that had had vista on it forever and i decided to install ubuntu on the 10gigs i had free for the longest time so i installed ubuntu but i did a stupid thing in my opinion and installed grubboot loader on the windows partition now when i try to boot vista it takes me back to the bootloader and i need to be able to use both vista(grphicswork) and ubuntu(networking) i cannot loose my vista files by re installing vista
When I first turn on I get the windows boot manager where I can choose between openSUSE 11.2 installer (LOCAL) and Windows Vista. Selecting either has the same result of trying to boot the openSUSE. This results in error 17 and pressing any key takes me to the GRUB4DOS where I can get to the command prompt.

When I ran the disk analyzer, it showed that most of the space is going towards the videos folder in /media/win7. My ~/Videos folder is symbolically linked to the videos folder on my Windows partition, which is mounted in my fstab using ntfs-3g under /media/win7. The question now is, shouldn't the videos only exist in the windows partition? /media/win7 usage shouldn't affect space usage in my root folder right?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just managed to compress my LVs, extend my VG to my new SSD, move the LVs to the SSD and remove the old disk from the VG. All is well and good (mind you, I did kill my /home partition but it's sorted now...)
My next step was to shrink the PV (I think that's what I want to shrink?) so that I can add another partition to the SSD (to reduce compile times). See below for my current setup. I have a 35G PV with LVs totalling around 33G but the "partition" of the LVM is still 58G.

The problem is that there may still be some system files running in the background that prevent all of your free space from consolidating. For some reason, I didn't find many partitioning guides that mention this.
If you find at Step 11 that your shrink space is still abnormally small, what you need to do is go back and open PerfectDisk. With "Consolidate Free Space" selected in the drop down box, click the "Boot Time" button. This allows PerfectDisk to consolidate free space while your hard drive is offline. Once this is done, go back to Step 10 and everything should work from there!
I have a dual boot Ubuntu 10.04 and Vista laptop.
My Ubuntu partions /dev/sda4 extended, which contains a /dev/sda5 ext4 and a /dev/sda6 ntfs partition.
Vista is on /dev/sda2 ntfs. I would like to wipe vista out, turn off dual boot (if possible) and use the space taken by vista to extend my /dev/sda6 ntfs partition in ubuntu.
I installed the live CD version of fedora (dual boot with vista) on my laptop. After I connected to the internet the updates downloaded and all went well. however when i restarted at the boot screen I found two instances of fedora such as
Fedora(2.6.27.9-159.fc10.i686)
Fedora(2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686)

The "other" is vista. I am wondering if this is OK or whether I have two fedora. If so i would like to remove one of them to save disk space.
I have just over 20GB of empty space on C:. When I click it under disk-management, the window comes up and says I can only resize it 192 MB less than what it is. But I have 20GB free. Any ideas on what is wrong? I also have this odd 9.56GB partition that is empty. DM says it's "EISA configuration"...whatever that is. I am planning to allocate about 10GB for F11 if this pans out ok.

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.

I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).
I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions
I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).
In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.
then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.
But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"
So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.
When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?
My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.
I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.
So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I am developing a I2C CDROM client driver. The CDROM firmware supports TOC information read through a I2C command. It sends the TOC information in burst ( Interrupts a GPIO pin when it is ready ) and my CPU does a I2C read to read the TOC. When the CDROM firmware finishes sending the last data burst , it informs my CPU that it is done with the TOC, by a flag in the last data burst. I would like to know, which is the most efficinet way I can send these TOC information to userspace?
