I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows Vista on my laptop. I would like to be able to access the File System in Windows because I need to use iTunes to sync my iPod, while I actually get most of my Music in Ubuntu.

I mount the drive but I cannot see any of the music, videos or documents contained on that drive (which is also an Ubuntu 11.04 drive). I was wondering so I could copy those files onto my external hard drive and reinstall since my Ubuntu crashed.

I now have a problem, because my Windows Vista has been wrapped up in the Linux partitioning system. I know it is located at dev/sda1 and that it is an HPFS/NTFS filetype, create a dual boot drive on my notebook, so that I can happily play with both systems. My laptop has a 250GB hard drive. Although when in Vista this is represented as two separate drives each of 110GB, (C or ACER and (D or DATA.
Using the CD, I start the installation and everything is straightforward and self explanatory, until I get stuck at step 4...
Where I am told by the ubuntu installer: "This computer has several operating systems on it." (I'm confused now, I thought it had one, Vista.)
Beneath I am shown a bar representing my disk space which is divided between...
I am given the option to use the entire disk: 'SCSI1 (0,0,0)(sda) - 250.1GB ATA WDC WD2500BEVT - 2', (and from the mention of 250BG in the name I'm assuming this is one disk and not the two separate drives named C: & D: in Vista.) ...along with a warning - "This will delete Windows Vista (loader), Windows Vista (loader), Microsoft Windows XP Embedded and install Ubuntu 9.04". (The aforementioned "several operating systems" obviously.)
But I wish to keep Vista, so I select the option to "specify partitions manually" and am brought to a screen named 'Prepare Partitions', where there is a table somewhat like this:
I am then given the option for "New partition table", and if I select any of the bottom four devices I can 'edit partition' or 'delete partition'.
Selecting the device /dev/sda3 (because it is the one that I'm guessing has no operating system data on it, judging by the previous screen) and choosing 'edit partition', allows me the following options...to create a new partition size, to select what I want to use the partition as. (There are also two options for formating a partition, which is a checkbox, and Mount point. These are both greyed out.)
When I look at the 'Use as:' option, within 'edit partition', the drop down box allows me to use the partition in the following ways:
- do not use the partition
- swap area
- NTFS
- FAT 32 file system
- FAT16 file system
- XFS journaling file system
- ReiserFS journaling file system
- Ext2 file system
- Ext4 journaling file system
- Ext3 journaling file system
I installed Lucid Lynx some days ago. Whenever I try to access Vista from GRUB, the computer restarts. I haven't changed anything about how the computer starts.

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

My router has 4 ethernet ports so I have 1 hooked up to a network hub where I have 2 computers running windows xp and 1 running windows 95, on my other router port I have a desktop using ubuntu 11.04 and I have 2 windows 7 laptops and 1 ubuntu 11.04 laptop connecting wirelessly. All of the computers can see each other in my network map except for the ones running ubuntu. I can successfully ping every computer on my network from every computer without fail (even the ubuntu ones). The weird thing is that my ubuntu computers can see and use files from all of my windows computers but still nothing can see the ubuntu computers. I have set up samba to no avail and when I open file sharing and try to enable it on ubuntu it comes up with "this feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your system." I have done clean installs of ubuntu 11.04 and 10.10 on both ubuntu computers and kept them up to date but the same problem persists. I have tried to do the same steps above with all of my computers wired but still nothing.

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
I had 9.10 installed and I did an upgrade to 10.04. However I cannot see anymore my Windows Vista partition with grub.. I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite p305.This is my boot script output:

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.
Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

I thought, because of a previous experience, that my music and pictures were ok in the windows file system because I would be able to access them. Well I can't. I don't even see the the Windows c: drive. I know its still there because I can boot windows.
So what do I need to do to make the c: volume / drive reappear.
I am using ubuntu 10.04 and I want to access remote machine having windows xp/7 installed on it. I don't want GUI of it but I want it's command prompt to be opened in my machine so that I can execute various commands on remote machine. Is there any application available for it? I tried using "rdesktop" but it gives gui and I want command prompt. Also I tried using "winexe" but its giving various errors of NT_STATUS.

I also need to work with files over 4gb in size (which can't be done with Fat32, which happens to work with all 3 OS's) I tried MacOS journaled, that didnt work. I like that I can access the Windows 7 partition from Ubuntu, but not the other way around. I found links for several file explorers, but is there any way to install an extension for the standard Windows Explorer that can open EXT3 partitions (and the files therein) as if they were NTFS?
Most of the links I found refer to custom file explorers. I only want to use one file explorer, not switch between two different ones depending on which partition I want to open. Also, if I use a custom file explorer, how will dialogs like "Save as..." be able to handle saving directly to EXT3?
I was able to easily do so when trying Ubuntu out on the Live CD,ut now that I've installed Ubuntu as a windows program and am inside it, I can't seem to find access to my old Windows files. How do I access them

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system (CentOS and Windows XP Pro). The computer has 2 disks with the operating systems on sda. My data files are on the 2nd disk (sdb I think). I would like to be able to access the data files on sdb from CentOS. I tried issuing the Linux command:mount -oro -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /mnt/winbut CentOS tells me that ntfs is not a file system it recognizes. Even if I leave out the -t ntfs I get the same message. Any ideas on how I can get access to the Windows files while in the CentOS boot?. I got the idea for the above mount command from the book: Fedora 10 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Bible byCristopher Negus.
