I have upgraded to 10 from 9 on my netbook and am considering downgrading. I now have screen size issues, my minimised programs disappear and my movie software will not work. I had no problems at all with 9.
View 2 RepliesAnytime I open a window and then minimize it-poof it's gone! for instance when I minimize firefox or just about any other app it just disappears instead of landing into the panel as it usually does when minimized. Is this a KDE problem? I just tried to upgrade to 11.2/KDE on the net (that was a mistake.) I finally installed from Downloaded DVD (install version) and crawled back from upgrade hell.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi don't know what happened, I was doing the ctrl+alt+fn thing to pan around my desktops, and i think i somehow assigned the mouse to automatically right click on its own whenever i move it or anything. This is really messed up. It's like a virus. Just writing this the right click window has come up about 20 times and there's now a dozen new folders on my desktop. How do I fix this? How do I go into controls and stuff?

Most of the times I open a program (either Evolution or Liferea) from the MeMenu, it appears shifted below. By this I mean that, even if the window is maximized, it does not reach the panel, leaving a strip where one can see behind. But, when one tries to click on anything, it behaves like if the window was in place.So, in order to click on some area, I have to aim some 50px or so above it. Of course this is not very comfortable. Stangely enough, this does no happen if I get the focus of Evolution or Liferea by some other means, such as Alt+Tab or clicking on the sidebar.

Movie Player and PitVi apps seems to disappear when I load a clip and enlarge the window.
Movie Player will allow a smaller window and the clip to be played but once I stretch the window, it disappear Nope, its not as though I "floored" that window. It's gone.completely.
PiitVi, when loading a clip, once its full loaded, it disappears.
I did try installing and re-installing but same results.
So if I have a program open and running.. doesnt matter what it is.. and I minimise it,the program still runs but I can't get back to it unless I go to the application menu and open it again. I use to be able to just reopen the window from the task bar but its not there any more and I have no idea why.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a two hours long home video with I edited in a video editor program. I'd like to burn it to DVD, but first I need to export it to an mpeg file. Cinelerra doesn't allow me to render to mpeg, instead it offers .avi or .dv - problem is that the resulting file size is enormous. (i.e. 1 minute of .avi = 1.2GB! or around 500MB when I output to .dv) What file format would be best to render to and at the same time not to get an insanely big file? I'd like to keep it under 1GB if possible.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently learning how to program in PHP i have recently installed LAMP server and apache2 and MySQL, i have run a bunch of commands, so i can really remember them all..the ones i can remember is:

and when i entered url in my browser bar i got a screen saying it worked but no content has been added.
I tried put my test file (called index.php) into /var/www/ still not worked renamed it to index.html still not worked.tried url and with index.html wasn't working.
i woke up today to try find out what was wrong. BUT NOW I CAN'T ENTER url.I got a "server not found" screen like when you enter an incorrect adress

I'm on 11.04, im on a macbook 6,2 i7. The wifi worked when i booted from cd but now it doesnt work once i installed.
The installation went okay (to start with) on my newly formatted hard drive (after death of Windows XP), but I got an error about 3/4 of the way through. The system said something about starting the desktop to try to resolve or fault find the problem. So I now have a desktop with access to all the menu system. I am feeling my way around slowly getting used to the environment. I think there are bits missing from the install but with no frame of reference I cannot tell what exactly is wrong. One obvious problem is my Monitor screen resolution. In Monitor preferences it is set as 'unknown monitor'.
The detect monitor button does nothing and the resolution is set as 2048 x 1536 which is just too small to see properly on the screen. I am currently using zoom to increase within a window to use at all. I have tried opening a terminal and using the xrandr command which reports the following:

I've been using Windows all my life (and still have to use it at work) but I made the big leap yesterday and installed Ubuntu on my personal machine (at last). With my "Windows-centric" mind, there are a million things that I still don't get, but I must say the community and forums look quite impressive and easy to access (kudos! ). I am testing this today!My current problem is with the wireless adapter. I have a Belkin N Wireless USB adapter (FSD8053v3) and Belkin, of course, doesn't make linux drivers. When I installed Ubuntu, it recognized it automatically and I could connect to my network, but navigation was very slow so I tried to install Belkin windows drivers using ndiswrapper. It worked immediately, and navigation was very fast. However after a reboot, I lost the connection, I can't even see any of the neighbouring networks.

the card works fine in xubuntu jaunty, doesn't in xubuntu karmic or ubuntu karmic. i (my wife) wants to use ubutun karmic, but we still can't get this ATMEL PCMCIA wirelesscard to work on ubuntu karmic like it does on jaunty... and we have the windows INF drivers

View 2 Replies View RelatedHave had 9.10 running for a while with no problems. Not long ago upgraded 1GB RAM to 2GB so I could run VirtualBox better. All worked fine until a few days ago, I ran the normal system update. Since then, all application windows just disappear off screen after a random? period of time.
I.e. I tried to check Software center and the window closed after getting to 5% download. Just tried the System download manager which got about 8 files into an update before logging off desktop and taking me to log in screen. I just tried Firefox and the toolbar icon was displayed while it was attempting to load, but then that disappeared.
Ubuntu 10.04 Gnome: I have about 5 PCs at home, and all of them have this problem.
The default ubuntu install places top panel icons in the following order:

The power button completely scrolls off the edge, and half of the user-id scrolls off as well, to look like this:

I suspect this is a very common problem. How do I combat it?
Computer was working alright, no one was really using it anymore so I decided to reformat it and install Ubuntu. The whole install process went through but when I restarted the computer it was all glitchy and anything that came on screen would disappear after an instant and then come back. Makes reading anything extremely hard. Realized I only have 256 MB of RAM which is probably a big problem which I understand but I need a solution to fix this. Any older versions of ubuntu or other linux distributions that I should try?

Now I'm using KDE 3.5 for several weeks and one thing really annoys me: there are a lot of programs that don't remember their last window position and/or size. They always default to a specific location/size when I close and open them again. I give you some examples:
Program that doesn't remember anything:
- Konqueror
Program that remembers window size, but not position:
- KMail
Nice Program that remembers everything:
- Basket Note Pads
Is there a way to tell these programs to remember their position/size?And a second question about konqueror: Can I tell konqueror to remember the view mode? I prefer MultiColumn view, but it always defaults to Icon view.
Is there any command /utility in linux that would Take screen shot of non focused window or minimized Window?

xfce mixer identifies my card (atiixp) and i put the volume to the max and make sure there is no mute, but now sound comes out from flash nor mp3's, nor assualt cube. they all worked in ubuntu with gnome. any ideas?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two monitors set up on my Asus N61J laptop, but have a weird problem:When I move the mouse to right-hand edge of the Left (Primary) screen, it disappears. To get it back, I have to either keep moving it to the next screen, or move it over something that will cause it to change shape.It also happens if I move it to the left-hand edge the Right (Secondary) screen. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this? It's a little annoying, as it makes it hard to select the Logout/Shutdown/Status menu

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to watch a DVD video using Movie Player, but nothing happens. It asked for a MPEG-2 decoder but then said Gstream already had the decoder. But to be sure I hunted down some rpm files with a free MPEG-2 decoder and installed them. Nothing happened. Before that, Movie Player asked for an Advanced Stream Format Demuxer. Then it told me it was already installed. I tried to uninstall Gstream. Maybe it was installed badly for reasons unknown, but the uninstaller warned that it would take 50 files with it.
I got the impression it was daring me to uninstall Gstream, so I chickened out. But I am upset now. This problem has wasted half of my Saturday day off and it is still not solved. I forgot to say I had also installed libdvdcss, in desperation. Nothing happened. This computer does display DVD videos with Movie Player using a different distro. I'm not surprised Fedora has problems. But you figure by 2011, watching a DVD video should be no problem by now in any distribution.
