Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Get A Movie Dvd To Work
Mar 4, 2010
I seem unable to get a movie dvd to work in version 8.04 LTS (with all the latest updates). All I get is a message telling me that there is an error. I've installed the GStreamer plugin but still no go.

I have a question, been using Ubuntu since version 8.04, never had a problem with playing dvd's before. Now Movie plater wont work at all and Vlc plays in jerks, tried every video output choice but still same. Oh, btw whatever Plymouth is will not and never has run, thought I'd throw that in.

I'm trying to watch a DVD video using Movie Player, but nothing happens. It asked for a MPEG-2 decoder but then said Gstream already had the decoder. But to be sure I hunted down some rpm files with a free MPEG-2 decoder and installed them. Nothing happened. Before that, Movie Player asked for an Advanced Stream Format Demuxer. Then it told me it was already installed. I tried to uninstall Gstream. Maybe it was installed badly for reasons unknown, but the uninstaller warned that it would take 50 files with it.
I got the impression it was daring me to uninstall Gstream, so I chickened out. But I am upset now. This problem has wasted half of my Saturday day off and it is still not solved. I forgot to say I had also installed libdvdcss, in desperation. Nothing happened. This computer does display DVD videos with Movie Player using a different distro. I'm not surprised Fedora has problems. But you figure by 2011, watching a DVD video should be no problem by now in any distribution.

Since I upgraded to Lucid Lynx, playing videos with the default player do not work properly. I only see the content while moving the window, or in full screen mode, and in both ways, the picture is distorsioned and with strange colors. Playing it with VLC does work properly ONLY IF I change the video output module to something different as default (X11 works, openGL also) but Linux Framebuffer does not.
The question: Is there a way to change the "default" video mode that Totem (or Kaffeine) use?? I have not found anything on the net with this exact problem.

Yesterday I fresh installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit LTS on my Toshiba Laptop. This is my second time with Ubuntu so bear with me. I got everything working even the webcam but it won't play dvd movies. When I go to the DVD player icon and try to open it...its won't because it doesn't recognize the dvd format.I have searched but only end up trying stuff that didn't work for it. I guess what it needs is Codec's.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04, and am trying to play a DVD on my Toshiba Notebook NB100. Movie Player says it cannot find the plugins suitable to play the DVD. I have gone through procedures recommended on numerous forums to get the codecs and libdvd packages installed but I still get a notice telling me MP doesn't have the plugins.

This is the first time I tried playing a VCD on my laptop and when I tried playing it on VLC, it indicated that an error, that it cannot read the file. I searched around the net for some solution and tried opening the VCD through the terminal to no avail. I tried switching to the Movie Player but it's the same. They play the initial 'Warning on illegal copying of the film, etc.' which lasts for about 15 seconds but after that, it won't play at all.

I am using ubuntu 10.04 and the default movie play that is automatically there is not reading dvds. It says:"Totem connot play this type of media (DVD) because it does not have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from the disc. Please install the necessary plugins and restart totem to be able to play this media."I did a little (not a lot) of looking and have tried one thing so far and have tried:
Code:
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
Followed by
[code]...

I have a "Digital Copy" of District 9 that came with my Blu-Ray disc. My problem is that the file is a DRM encoded .wmv so that I cannot play it back in totem on my 32-bit Karmic system. VLC plays it back as distorted noise.I know this BS is because of the files 'Digital Restrictions Management'. My Question is: What programs should be used to break DRM and re-encode the file, and HowTo?

This never happened with Ubuntu 8.10-9.10, but both my video players, VLC and Movie Player, say they can't find the wma codec (actually it says wmas, and this is referring to videos not audio) and says that this can't be put right, even though at the same time these players have begun to play the video correctly.
I've got all the updates and the Restricted Extras, etc. Everything seems to be working. This is on an Acer Aspire One, dual booting with W7, installed from USB stick.

I have just upgraded to Lucid. While trying to watch movies (i have installed all the requisite plugins), I encountered certain problems. The following is what I noticed after some thorough search into the issue:
1. Suppose one goes to the location of a video file, say, /Home/Videos/Sound of Music.xyz , double clicking the file would open the movie player (Totem) but one would not be able to see any video, though sound is coming.
2. Sometimes, on entering the fullscreen the video started from double clicking the file is visible, but leaving full screen, it is lost again. This however doesnt happen in all cases, because mostly one sees no video if through double-clicking the file.
3. The same operation of playing, if done through the player (by /Movie/Open.. or by Adding a video file in the playlist) happens quite properly.
4. A .mkv file doesnt play for long, since the player crashes.
5. Subtitles are not detected, even after putting the settings on automatic loading of subtitles (/Edit/Preferences/Automatically.....)

I am currently trying to play a VC-1 encoded MKV-file under Linux (Ubuntu 10 / latest Mint, both are affected), but VLC reports that it isn't able to decode WVC-1. VLC is able to play this file under Fedora 13, OS X and Windows, while both mplayer and ffplay are able to play this movie under Ubuntu 10 and Linux Mint.
I made two log files that where previously posted on the VLC forum, where I was told that it looks like there is a problem with the avcodec. I have basic experience with compiling stuff, but my knowledge of C++ and the linux internals is close to null. Which packages do I need to build from source in order recreate avcodec and its dpendendcies?
Link to error log running Ubuntu 10 and latest "Linux Mint" (reinstalled multiple times):[url]
Link to log running Fedora13 (works, but I prefer debian based linux):[url]
And last but not least a link to my thread on the VLC board:[url]
