Ubuntu :: 9.04 - Running Second Monitor In Own X Screen
May 8, 2010
I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 (almost ready to upgrade to 10.04) with a geforce 8800 and as of a few days ago an additional monitor (of a different rez, natch). What I'm trying to do is run the second monitor in it's own X screen. It seems to function; I can run the mouse seamlessly off one screen to another and I can move files from one screen to another and back. The problem is that all I can see on the second monitor is the mouse cursor.
It appears that compiz is running cube fine, as far as watching the cursor disappear momentarily as I roll desktops. It flashes active several times while getting the desktop together on boot (this is particularly mean-spirited IMHO) then goes black. I can even see files I've dropped there when it's flashing me. It's there, I swear it, and X server is running screen 0 flawlessly. How can I turn the light on in X server screen 1?

I would like to use my second monitor with my Slackware (Laptop) setup but they are different sizes/resolutions.
This is no problem with KDE but before X is started and when X ends there are big issues with the TTY0 console being distorted.
Is it possible to disable the second monitor when X is not running?
(Slackware64Current, ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 card)
I essentially want the second monitor to activate ONLY in the event of an X Session and turn off when X halts.

We are running IPmonitor to monitor the disk usage on our Linux servers. It does not seem to coincide with what is reported when running df -h. For example on a Red Hat 5.3 server - our IPmonitor shows that 85% is used on the /usr partition, however when I do a df -h on the server it shows that 91% is used. Why there would be a discrepancy? IPmonitor uses SNMP.

I'm playing with dual monitors. I have an NVIDIA GT220 set up so that my monitor and my TV are running as extended desktops. Everything is working well enough, but there is one annoying bit I've noticed:
If I'm watching ..... on monitor 1 in fullscreen and working on monitor 2, clicking anything in monitor 2 kills full-screen in monitor 1. Is this something that can be fixed somehow or is it a hardwired "feature"?

I am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.
I have a Thinkpad E420, Fedora 15

I have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.

I have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.

Recently the power went when i was using ubuntu and my system shut down since the ups took too long to supply power. So i started my system and choose to boot linux, but it said display drivers not detected, linux running in low graphic mode, and it said 1. run windows in low graphic mode for now...2. reset to previous graphic mode- i chose this and it restarted, since then the ubuntu loading page appears and then my monitor goes blank although my processor is running.....why is this happening?.....i have a ati 5770 graphic card through which it should display.

My wife was using cryptkeeper fine, then she right-clicked the keys on the panel and did something, I'm not sure what. Anyway, the keys you click on to open the encrypted folder are gone and I can't figure out how to get them back. System monitor shows cryptkeeper running. I can kill it and re-start it, but the keys don't show on the panel. I'm running ubuntu 9.10.

I've been unable to connect an external monitor to my laptop running 10.04, even though the resolution and framerate are right. The monitor says something like "unsupported video settings".
In other news, I put the live cd into another computer which relies on a monitor and after the very first screen with the two logos at the bottom, the monitor decides to go to sleep. I try with another monitor and it just seems to have to feed. This is the more important problem, but I wonder if there isn't some built-in problem with 10.04.

today i was trying to activate KMS by adding:
Code:
radeon.modeset=1
to grub.
it worked fine, and fixed the black-box bug in cairo-dock, and i finally had a nice graphic bootscreen again.
but another bug occured: im running dual-screen setup, my notebook is connected via vga to a dell 22 inch widescreen TFT.
by default both screens running with 60hz and no problem.
now, after activating KMS it happend that, while the dell monitor still ran 60hz, the notebook screen was running with 61hz! it was shown in the monitor-options.
the notebook monitor was therefore flickering a bit for 5 seconds, than running fine for another few seconds. then flickering again. (obviously, as 61hz is too much when it should run with 60hz!)
so my question is: how can i activate KMS again and have both of my screens running with 60hz again? is there an option?

I'm a newbie so apologies if there is a trivial answer to this.
I (maybe somewhat rashly) tried to connect my tv to my laptop (Dell Latitude D400) running Ubuntu 9.10.
I plugged in the cable, went to the System>Display menu, where it had detected the model and make of tv (Samsung 19" LCD) (I think the resolution was 1650 x 1050 or similar). I clicked the box to activate the second monitor with the "Virtual resolution" adjusted. It told me to log out then log back in.
I accordingly logged out but then couldn't log back in. It had evidently changed the resolution not only on the 2nd monitor but also on the laptop monitor. A box was visible on screen but completely illegible/unclear since the laptop monitor couldn't display that resolution.
After a few restarts and button pushes it is now restarting at a terminal (I enter my username/password at a command prompt on an otherwise blank screen rather than the graphical interface loading up).
Question: are there any commands that could change the resolution back to its original settings then restart the Ubuntu graphic interface? Some thing similar to the "load with last known good configuration settings" option in Windows maybe.

I just install the desktop 10.04 version. I have a viewsonic 27" monitor. What I get is the screen size is bigger than the actual monitor.I can't find a way to fix this. In other words, when max-size a window, I can't see the edges. It goes beyond the monitor size. My monitor don't have any way to fix the vertical or horizontal size.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an older Biostar IDEQ 200N SFF computer for my son. I am by no means a linux expert and I am having a problem I can't seem to resolve on my own. I am using a CRT monitor, and the image on the screen is not aligned properly with the monitor. Everything seems shifted down about a quarter of an inch or less. Even the usual click areas are no right. What I mean that is order to click on a link or icon, you actually have to click slightly above it. I know the CRT monitor has screen adjustment controls, but this seems to be linux or hardware related. I have tried changing the resolution, and for a brief second after I change the res it does seem to correct the problem, but before I can even tell it to use the new settings, it shifts itself back down. What can I do? Do I need to install different drivers or something else?

I just replaced my PSU and now my computer is not booting up. To make sure that my new psu is not causing the problem, I put my old one back in but it still doesn't boot up. My system powers on, motherboard led glows, the processor starts running and so does the graphics card. The monitor stays blank though. Nothing shows up on the monitor. Just a blank screen with the monitor led blinking. What could be the problem ? It was working fine before I replaced my psu.

I used the Monitor setup to indicate that my widescreen monitor is rotated 90 degrees to the left, to make it long for editing code, but the login page still does not rotate. I am assuming this is something simple, and probably a user defined option since my user is likely the only one with the monitor rotated, as there is just my user defined, but there are the other system ones, including MySQL. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 upgrade from 10.04.

I have a old Pentium III box with equally old monitor (It says LG Sutdioworks 45v).I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.I have found it difficult to setup my screen resolution. It shows by default 800x600.After some tweaking I can stretch upto 832x624.I have seen resolution up to 1024x768 in windows on the same box and same monitor. How can I improve the resolution?I have searched and found out that i need a xorg.conf setup as Ubuntu cant identify my monitor properly.I also installed ddcprobe, read-edid.However I have met with limited success.
