I have configured DNS on ubuntu server 8.10 and it is working fine. There is one question I have though. Everytime I ping a LAN device by name I get the reply from the server with only the IP Address.

I was using my ISP's DNS server. When I would ping something that doesn't exist, e.g. blahtest.com, it would reply anyway. When I tried to go to the site in a browser, it was some page like "I hope we can help you find what you're looking for". I thought that was ridiculous, so I changed to OpenDNS's DNS server.

I run an centos server. From the console I can ping google.com and get a reply. But when I ping another address say xyz.com, the IP address is resolved (11.22.33.44) but there is no reply. In the same network in our office from my desktop I ping [URL] and there is a reply.I turned of the firewall but still the same problem.

I have two machines on this network, one running Ubuntu and the other running Fedora.
When I'm using the Wireless network on the Ubuntu machine, I cannot ping the Fedora machine. Everything else works. I can browse the net fine.
If I switch over to the Wired Network then I can ping the other machine.
I don't understand why ping doesn't work only over the Wireless. I can ping the router so I'm guessing it's getting blocked by the router but I didn't block ICMP traffic.
I tried asking on IRC and they ran out of ideas too to find out where the problem is.

This applies to my 2 opensuse PC's, my Windows PC is fine.I can ping a hostname, say "PC1" but I can not ping PC1.domain.local (even the host PC can not ping it's own FQDN). When I ping just the hostname the ping stats even list the FQDN.Onto the next issue, since all my PC's, have the domain prefix domain.local, my Synology can not. I can ping it's IP and that is it. I can resolve it's name with nmblookup just fine tho and that is what is killing me. How is this not resolving.Even weirder, I can browse to "Synology" in Network Servers under places on the slab.

I just installed my first EVER bind DNS server. I am running bind9 on Ubuntu 10.04. Everything seems to be working great except one thing: If I ping a host that I have set up in bind by its HOSTNAME the pings take 5-6 seconds to reply/print to the screen between each echo response. If I ping by the host's IP address, they echo back very quickly.
I have read that IPv6 can cause this, but I have disabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf and the problem still exists.
I know everyone says this can't be a DNS issue, but this never was an issue with dnsmasq (which i was using prior), and it doesn't make sense that the ping are ONLY slow when pinging by hostname and not IP.
Configs below:
Ping by hostname - there is a 5-6 second delay between each one of the responses:
Code:
Ping by IP - the responses come VERY quickly one after the other:
Code:
/etc/resolv.conf:
Code:
Code:
rev.0.168.192.in-addr.arpa:
Code:

So, I have an Virtual Machine running CentOS 5.4. It sits behind a hardware firewall which also does NAT'ing. I've set up plenty of these, so I know for sure the firewall and NAT rules are set up correctly. From the host, I can ping anything in my subnet and the gateway. But I can't ping anything else beyond the gateway. I can perform DNS queries and when I try to ping, it finds the appropriate IP address. But from the outside, I can ping the PUBLIC address (It's a 1 public to 1 private address NAT, not 1 public to multiple private). I've tried it with IPTABLES on and off, with no change.

I have Mandriva One 2009.0 (192.168.1.100) on one box and Mandriva Free 2010.0 (192.168.1.118) on the other. I can ping router (192.168.1.1) from both of these boxes but I can't ping one box to the other and the other way around. What's going on?.
Do I have to change some settings in router?. Or is it firewall issue on those two machines?. Both of these boxes are connected by cable. Symbol of the router: TL-WR340G.

I've noticed that after the initial startup and updates, if I shut down ubuntu I cannot get back on. The loader just gets stuck at the "Logo screen".When run in recovery mode I recieve the following errors (a few in duplicate):"mount all main process (556) terminated with status 2"."mount all-shell (559) terminated with status 2"."could not get password database information for UID of current process: user '???' unknown or no memory to allocate password entry".After this I'm left without even a command line and nothing I type does anything.I've never had problems with ubuntu in the past after using it for about 6 months but this is the first time I've tried running it alongside windows 7, could that be the cause?

Very recently I started using Evolution as my mail client. Before that I was using MS Outlook. Everything seems to be OK with Evolution but I find 2 startling limitations.
1. How to set up out of office auto reply
2. What is the equivalent of mail archive.
I tried to google it and looks like many people have the same issue but no proper solution. Is this really a limitation with Evolution?

This is the issue: when replying to someone, the cursor defaults to the beginning of the date line (on date this and this, that and that wrote:...), and I have to press enter twice, and then up-key twice, to bring it to a proper situation where I can start replying.
Today the issue is a bit better, since I am using GVIM for editing, so I can just press O (or make any other good mapping for my needs), but I am using GVIM only for English emails (since with Hebrew it is not really... hmm... useful, still), so the problem remains.
I know it is a very "little" issue - but come on, 9 years and no solution?!
In general, it would be nice to allow one to customize completely the "date line"; for example, to allow one to decide that his reply line will begin like this:
(two empty lines, after the cursor!)

Since upgrading to 11.04 yesterday, nauilus has been acting strangely. It takes about 30 seconds for a right click on the desktop to respond, whereas before it would've taken 1 or 2. Also, when trying to open a directory, say, the Home direcotry accessible from the launcher,it takes about a minute to open, which is odd, because all of my other applications (Chrome, Banshee etc) ares all running smoothly. And when the direcotry windowe does open, within 10 sconds it will turn grey and prompt me to force quit. When i try to open nautilus from a terminal, it comes back with the message
Code:
(nautilus:3508): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

I can ping fedora from xp computer but i can't able to ping xp from fedora computer.
I have manully edit the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file with correct subnet mask and ip address because when i tried to give ip address manully in network manager the subnetmask is replaced with gateway address don't know why.
Now i want to share internet through crossover cable . xp is connected to internet through wireless usb adapeter.

I am running Debian Squeeze with XFCE. I have installed gdebi, but when I try to run it as gdebi-gtk it gets to the point of password entry, lets me do this then closes before installing the package. It worked fine for the first few, and it works as gdebi from the command line, so I can only guess that it is linked to something with gtk graphical front end. I tried removing using apt-get remove and reinstalling as well as purging the cache and checking for broken dependencies.
This is the output when I run gdebi-gtk from terminal

I've just found that one of my email addresses with an auto-reply gets stuck in a loop when it receives email from senders who also have an auto-reply set up.Is there an easy way for me to set Postfix so that it only sends one auto-reply email or so that it only sends a maximum of 1 auto-reply message per day to the sender?
