using nvidia_173 driver from repository with nvidia geforce fx5500 sping returns this:
Could not set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual would installing nvidia-glx-173 package be the solution? just realized i had the nvidia_173 driver activiated, but not in use. ran "sudo nvidia-xconfig" boots in tty1, so i navigated to the X11 directory and deleted xorg.conf, boots to gnome now
how do i keep it from going to tty1? i know there are threads on this here and there, but most leave you with the default driver, and i want to keep nvidia_173

I switched back to Fedora after a long time and wow a lot of things have changed! Fedora 12 is looking amazing and the best part is I could install it on my USB so easily. And then I found I couldnt open any PDF files on Fedora - I tried installing AdobeReader, xpdf and openoffice. All of them are just throwing some file format errors.... <I cant push a screenshot now since i removed the packages>
Initally i thought it might be some version conflict but it turned out I couldnt open any pdf's including docs from 5 years back to docs with embedded media content. I know I havent put any info here. I am looking for a little info on what is needed to get Acrobat/Xpdf working in Fedora 12... And I couldn't get any errors logged so I'd like a little help there if I need to share some debug messages...
that gave these messages [root@localhost Presentations]# evince module-development.mgp.pdf
** (evince:5768): WARNING **: Failed to create dbus proxy for org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name
Error: May not be a PDF file (continuing anyway)

Each time I connect to a Mumble server, this appears:Quote: Unable to find matching CELT codecs with other clients. You will not be able to talk to all users. Apparently that is the cause for not being able to hold a conversation on mumble. Nobody can hear me, though I can't specify if I can hear others at the moment. Some googling has led me to this:
Gentoo Bug #293300
media-sound/mumble-1.2.0_beta1 tries to load media-libs/celt-0.7.0 as
"libcelt.so.0.7.0", but the actually installed library is named
"libcelt.so.0.0.0". Thus CELT support in Mumble is supposedly missing, but can
be restored by symlinking libcelt.so.0.7.0 to libcelt.so.0.0.0.

I had dual screen config (large desktop) going on 11.2 with proprietary nvidia driver without problems. After upgrade to 11.3 this didin't work. I was not able to find a way to configure nouveau drivers, and it was stuck in the 'twinview' mode, so decided to install binary nvidia instead (the 'hard way'). Took me a while to figure out 'nomodeset' thing, but in the end drivers were installed successfully. The problem now is that only monitor displays anything, and I can't find the nvidia control panel to activate second monitor and extend the desktop there.
Used to be able to install nvidia control panel easily in 11.2 with one-click install, but for 11.3 the page says that the one-click install buttons aren't ready yet (SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE) So my question is 'how to get dual screen going and extend my desktop to second screen using 11.3 and nvidia 210 card' ? And I don't care whether it's nouveau or proprietary drivers, as long as it's easy to configure and it works.

I have two table files with x (1st column) ,y (2nd column) coordinates and intensity (3rd column). I need to match these two tables and divide the intensities at the consecutive coordinates on the 3rd column. I'm new to linux, have been somewhat of a computer geek my whole life and thought it about time that I delved into the world of linux. So I installed ubuntu 10.04 on my computer. I love it. However, I can't get my wireless to work. In my dorms there are no ethernet hookups, so I have to use the wireless. I typed "sudo lshw -class network" into the root terminal. The important things that I figured out was the bus info: pci@0000:4:06.0 and the pysical id: 6 (not sure if the physical id is important but it sounds like it is). I then did a lspci and found that at bus 04:06.0 it is a RaLink Device 3060. I downloaded the .tar file for the driver. I could not find instructions for it online so I followed the ones for the rt2860 driver : [URL].... I could not get it to work, It built ok and installed ok, but when I do the modprobe I get an error saying the device or resource is busy. Either that or that it cannot be found. One thing that I found weird was that I couldn't get it to build a 3060 driver, it would only build a 3562 one.

I followed this procedure before installation (live CD) and it successfully found and installed the firmware. Apparently it was saved in live CD. What do I need to do?

Linux noob, and I'm trying to install a little program on my rootserver, but it requires libboost and libboost-dev. Unfortunately ubuntu can't seem to find the packages and google does not help either. The only info I found was telling me to install "gnuradio" or something, which takes up 138 mb. So, how can I install these packages now?also: I cancelled the installation of gnuradio via "CTRL+C", will this cause any problems? Are there some trash files left on the system now?

sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 as read in one of the forums and received the following error:

both the tar version and the unzippedversion are on my desktop but I'm not sure they are installed and I don't know what to install. I've clicked every file in every folder most seem to be instructions not what I know as executables.

I've been scratching my head on this one for a while. My level of knowledge of Linux isn't great. I know enough to be dangerous. I'm trying to get Webmin installed to give me an easier web front to Linux. I run the command to get the prereq's.
Quote:
sudo apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl

So I can see that it can't find libnet-ssleay-perl I bit of searching around leads me to the sources.list file which tells apt-get where to get the packages I think. This is as follows.
Quote:

# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu-Server 8.04 _Hardy Heron_ - Release amd64 (20080423.2)]/ hardy main restricted

Distro: Ubuntu 11.04-beta1 'natty'
Problem: 'your hardware does not support Unity; you will be using Ubuntu Classic.'
Installed: nvidia-common 0.2.28,
nvidia-current 270.30-0ubuntu3,
nvidia-settings 270.29-0ubuntu1,
linux-image-generic-pae 2.6.38.7.21,
linux-headers-generic-pae 2.6.38.8.22
[Code]....
After reading a few other threads on the matter, I suspect the problem is with the 'nvidia-current' package more than the libgl1-mesa-glx or unity packages. ... though it does seem odd that Unity doesn't have a non-OpenGL verison.
If I find a solution, I'll come back. I hope the answer isn't "ditch nvidia-current for the binary install script from nVidia direct." If someone found this thread in a search, the nVidia driver install scripts can be found at [URL]

Firefox 4.0b7 is out. I am compiling it now. First though, I had to update cairo and pixman. Cairo was easy enough modifying the slackbuild, but pixman was a peta. I couldn't find a slackbuild, so I had to really modify one. It worked, though, building pixman first, then cairo. The FF build has been going for about 10 minutes, so I know it has a way to go.

I couldn't find the kernel docs that go with 13.1. These docs would be the result of running this in the top-level kernel source dir.
make pdfdocs
make htmldocs
etc.
Are these not packaged? Are these built ever as part of a release or test cycle? Do any other slackers ever build these? I am seeing lots of errors from make pdfdocs "how much attention is given to DocBook on slackware?".

I just made the complete switch from windows 7. I'm looking for a weather applet and a currency conversion applet for my desktop.
I tried gdesklets but I couldn't get any of the weather applets to work. They couldn't find weather data. The weather part of my gnome-panel works fine.
I also couldn't find a simple currency conversion tool with gdesklets.
Ps: major kudos for anyone who can find a tv guide desklet.
