Linux noob, and I'm trying to install a little program on my rootserver, but it requires libboost and libboost-dev. Unfortunately ubuntu can't seem to find the packages and google does not help either. The only info I found was telling me to install "gnuradio" or something, which takes up 138 mb. So, how can I install these packages now?also: I cancelled the installation of gnuradio via "CTRL+C", will this cause any problems? Are there some trash files left on the system now?
I'm trying to install libboost-all and libboost-all-dev, but it says the package couldn't be found! Any idea how to install this via putty now? Also, how can I update my cmake to 2.6.x ? it's at 2.4.7

I did a full install of 9.10 on my Dell Inspirion 1200 laptop & use a Dell 1350 card, after several posts and replies I went to [URL]and followed the instructions for Ubuntu/Debian. This is the result I get....
mike@mike-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter [sudo] password for mike: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree
[code]....
I followed this procedure before installation (live CD) and it successfully found and installed the firmware. Apparently it was saved in live CD. What do I need to do?
just loaded 9.10 and trying to install the NDIS wrapper so I can use my USB wirless adaptor. Executed the command

E: couldn't find package ndiswrapper-utils-1.9
both the tar version and the unzippedversion are on my desktop but I'm not sure they are installed and I don't know what to install. I've clicked every file in every folder most seem to be instructions not what I know as executables.
I've been scratching my head on this one for a while. My level of knowledge of Linux isn't great. I know enough to be dangerous. I'm trying to get Webmin installed to give me an easier web front to Linux. I run the command to get the prereq's.
So I can see that it can't find libnet-ssleay-perl I bit of searching around leads me to the sources.list file which tells apt-get where to get the packages I think. This is as follows.

using nvidia_173 driver from repository with nvidia geforce fx5500 sping returns this: Could not set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual would installing nvidia-glx-173 package be the solution? just realized i had the nvidia_173 driver activiated, but not in use. ran "sudo nvidia-xconfig" boots in tty1, so i navigated to the X11 directory and deleted xorg.conf, boots to gnome now
how do i keep it from going to tty1? i know there are threads on this here and there, but most leave you with the default driver, and i want to keep nvidia_173

I'm trying to install some nvidia drivers but I need to install the correct headers. uname -r says: 2.6.31-21-serverbut I can't find the headers anywhere to install. 2.6.31-21 and 2.6.31-21-generic are installed but not the server version. It's not showing up in synaptic and using apt-get I get the error message in the title.I have 2.6.31-22-server headers but for some reason when I boot into 2.6.31-22 the OS can't see my 3ware cards and, obviously, the arrays they control. So, I can't use 2.6.31-22 yet.

My son's desktop has Fedora 12 and a wireless card. Everything worked for a long time until one fine day the network management just disappeared from both System/Preferences menu and the panel on top.I can run a Live CD with Fedora 12 on that machine and it immediately connects to our home wireless network. Booting from hard drive has no sign of NM. Trying to run 'yum install NetworkManager-gnome' does nothing because there is no connection. Running the same command as a LiveUser from CD does seem to install everything (but where to???), no errors reported, and still the is no network functionality upon reboot from the hard drive, even when plugging to LAN with a cable. It seems that I need NetworkManager in order to go online in order to install NetworkManager.I have other computers at home that work fine, I was able to download a couple of archives with NM, but I am new to Linux and have no idea what to do with those files.I could not find any step-by-step installation guides for NM, especially when the computer has no connection at all.
Despite using Linux for a while I'm only just getting a taste of managing my very own system so please be gentle!
After trying a `blind' sudo apt-get install acroread which was unsuccessful I tried installing using the synaptic package manager, and couldn't find it in there either.
According to the software sources info I have both Universe and Multiverse switched on. I'm fairly sure one of my attempted permutations of `acro', `reader' and `acrobat' etc should have hit upon something so I assume there must be something more fundamental wrong!
i created a meta package with a collection of useful tools. But now i want to find a way that all the depended package are removed if the meta package is removed. my first try was to use the postrm script. but this dont work as dpkg still hold the lock.
I am running Ubuntu 9.1 and am trying to download the apt file from the adobe web site and use apturl to open it. I enable the partner channel packages finish downloading and an error pops up. Could not find package 'adobe-flashplugin'.
