Ubuntu :: 10.4 System Slows To Unbearable Until Reboot?
May 3, 2010
I ran Karmic until last week, and noticed that it seemed to be getting slower. I was hoping a clean install of Lucid would fix that. it's worse. If I leave my machine running for a few hours, something begins dragging down the performance to a crawl.
System Monitor sometimes won't come up - launches an empty grey window. Other times, System Monitor reports that gnome-system-monitor is consuming 86-96% CPU. This is a dual-core Dell e6500 laptop with 4 Gigs of RAM, it should fly. Any ideas on troubleshooting this?

Several months ago my PowerEdge 2850 SLES 9 server response time gradually slows after reboot. Daily the server seems to get slower and gets to the point where I have to reboot to clear the problem. To address this I added addtional 2G of memory, but issue is now worse. I have to reboot daily.

Ive posted here before but have not received any solutions. I have freeze ups in the application software including open office, movie player and firefox to such an extent that it is barely usable. These lock ups occur frequently, consistently, and use can become an extremely aggravating issue. I use the computer for VPN functions and it causes the vpn to disconnect. I dont need to tell you the problems that causes.
The entire computer locks up for periods of 20 seconds or more even where no activity can be performed. I have a computer with 2-2gig processors with 2 gigs of memory.I update my machine whenever the update manager informs me.
I use the computer monitor and can see the cpu usage spike to 100% when the computer is idle, causing lockups. I know Im not the only one who experiences this problem cause I see it all over the net.
My question is this, when are the developers for ubuntu going to address these issues. As it stands now this product is NOT ready for prime time. I dont wish to become a ubuntu guru. Im simply wanting a stable operating system to do basic wordprocessing and other such functions.

I've got a Lenny system on a quad core system with 4GB of ram. Currently Linux www 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 25 02:05:44 UTC 2010 x86_64
I've had it for a couple of years, and its been fine, very fast and reliable.
Lately, its got a problem: after its been running for a day or two, access using SSH, or TLS/HTTPS gets really slow. Painfully slow. A reboot returns the system to normal fast operation.
I can't think of anything that has changed, other than I got a new SSL cert and installed it.
The system is mostly a vanity domain server, with Apache HTTPD running a half dozen very low volume services. Its running bind9, mysql, and a few other things, nothing big, nothing that would load down a quad core with lots of ram. The disk is only 14% used.

I have a newly installed Dell Optiplex 755 with Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) and I am having serious issues with network copying. Whenever I start rsync och scp with larger amounts of data my system becomes practically unresponsive (all types of apps grey out) until those processes are completed. Cpu stays at below 10% and I have lots of free memory and such .

I noticed that sometimes my Linux server will randomly start to lag really badly, to the point where even a http request takes forever. It is an Intel Core2Quad with 8GB of ram running FC9. This is my "Everything" server so it does file, email, DNS, web (for local stuff only), VMs and so on. There are about 5-6 VMs running on it at any given time. I manage it through a VNC session and have some SSH consoles within that session. This way if I reboot my PC I don't lose all my SSH consoles. If I need to SSH to any server I do it from there. I treat it kinda like a terminal server to some extent.
When this slowdown happens, top is not really useful because I also do F@H so that will always be to the top, but it's low priority. The VMs are also always near the top. This does not change whether it's slow or not, so when it's slow, I have nothing to go by on how to troubleshoot. The load does seem to skyrocket though. Right now it's doing the slowdown thing and it's at 8.09. Normally it's at around 3 which imo is good as it it's under 4. I have 4 cores so anything more than 4 means it's queuing. At least that's how I understand it. This is the output of top:
Code:
[root@borg ~]#
[root@borg ~]#
[code]....

I'll often run iceweasel for watching videos via flash (hulu, ....., et cetera) while working, in fedora I never noticed any performance problems, watching the video while using chrome for browsing, gedit for editing, et cetera, everything was responsive. Though, now on debian running iceweasel for the same purpose hogs memory and processor time, which slows down the responsiveness of the system as a whole, making it difficult to use other programs.I'm curious how I should go about troubleshooting this issue, and what diagnostics might help me find the solution.

A few days I used the wubi installer to install Ubuntu over Windows. This I did on my C: drive. I also have another partition, the X: which now is my D: drive after I used the gparted live cd to give the system partition more free space. No problems so far.
But now, when I use Clementine Player, I see that it cannot find any of my songs in my library and Deluge has to 'check' my downloads every time I open it after a reboot. My theory is that the folder inside /media/, which contains the file system gets a new name (a 16 digit capital letter/number name) every time I reboot my computer - or maybe every time I use Windows and then Ubuntu again? It's pretty annoying,

I have a personal ubuntu server that provides apache, glassfish, firewall, routing, email, CVS, MySQL, etc.... This server has been running for a while with two hard drives configured into a RAID 1 array. The array has two partitions, one for swap and one for the data. I currently back up the data with a removable hard drive. I use dd and create an image of one drive and the MBRs (partition tables) of each drive. In a disaster situation I can use this data to recreate one drive and then re mirror it to the second, or just boot the back up.I like this solution because I can easily recover from bare metal, and the backup is transparent. I can browser it if needed since its an uncompressed image of the drive. The one drawback is that I need to reboot the system with a linux CD to do the backup.
My hard drive space is almost at capacity. So what I want to do is add a third drive to the array and migrate it to RAID 5. However this will cause my current backup method to no longer work. How can I back up this RAID 5 array. I need to back up the entire system, and not just the data. I have made many tweaks to the system over the years that it has been running that I can't lose if a restore is needed. I have seen a large thread here that people have been using tar. My concern with tar is how do you use a tar archive to restore a system to a new array. Im assuming that you would need to setup the array and then just restore the archive? Also, i don't have much faith in using tar on a running system. Doesn't this open yourself up to corrupted backups? My second idea is using rsync. While I consider myself experienced in linux from 10 years of personal and professions use, I have not had much experience with this utility. Would rsync provide a more reliable way to backup a running system that would enable a bare metal restore later? I once read something about people using rsync with hard links to create a backup that could store many incremental backups. My main concern with both rsync and tar is not being able to restore the OS to the state that it was in at the time of the backup.

Ubuntu 10.10, fairly fresh install. The order of the icons in the system tray changes each time I reboot. It's worked fine since install a few weeks ago until today when I booted and the wireless wouldn't connect. I rebooted and they came up in a different order so I rebooted again and the order changed yet again. Maybe I should just keep rebooting until I find an order I'm happy with then never switch my machine off.I've attached a printscreen to show what I mean.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to add a user/pass and allow them to issue the reboot command. Ideally, I dont want them to be able to see files/directories or anything else for that matter.I was thinking something along the lines of a chroot jail that has a single script that would call the reboot.

Every time I reboot my computer the system time always comes up exactly 10 hours behind where it should be. So if I reboot it at 16:00 it comes up as 06:00.
This has only been happening since I got back from a trip to Australia, where I naturally changed the computer's timezone to match the local one. I'm now back in Central European Time which is 10 hours behind Australia's. This is on opensuse 11.3.
I've used the YAST date and time tool to set the timezone correctly, and /etc/localtime is set correctly:
Code:
:~> sha1sum /etc/localtime

in a previous version of openSUSE (I think it was v10.3), there was a possibility to directly/automatically start another OS after exiting (rebooting) openSUSE. This could be done through "right-clicking" on the Reboot (Restart) button from the KDE's log-off dialog and choosing the OS you wanted to be started after the restart. Please, does anybody know if this is possible in openSUSE 11.2 (KDE 4.4)? PS: I know that GRUB enables that, but I prefer a "GUI way" rather than using command line and editing configuration files

The cluster successfully started and was working fine for about a day or so and then i logged in as root and hosts, fstab, known_hosts were all giving me this error when i tried to modify them "W10: Warning: Changing a readonly file"
I failed over to another node and same thing happens on another node. I can't modify any of these files

This was my first experience with Ubuntu, I was told to switch the hard drives on my computer and put the Windows drive in a safe place for the install. The first time I did the install on the hard drive (which was the clean second hard drive that came with my computer), I either didn't realize I believe I didn't realize I had to click a button and thought the install had gotten stuck, and therefore cut off the install midway through. The second time around the install went without a hitch, and I was able to boot to desktop once. There, I was notified that I needed/should install NVIDIA drivers, I believe version 173 was listed as the next most recent drives (the other was "current"), I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7350LE graphics card, and after installing the drivers, I went to the restart menu as directed and clicked restart, not shut down but restart, and there were several listed errors on the text/DOS screen, shutdown errors I believe (the errors were 5 digits and were something like 56759 or something like that, I can't be certain if I'm remembering right, though, but there were two errors going over again). I then proceeded to turn off the computer manually, and upon it coming on again, instead of the normal Ubuntu flash screen before login, a more choppy Ubuntu 10.10 screen popped up and it led me to the DOS mode, where I was able to login, but it did me no good because I don't know command logic for Ubuntu. The best I did (its the best I ever do when these things happen) is get menus to pop up that are basically useless. I turned the computer off and on again three times, and tried booting directly from disk, but that failed.
I'm actually using the same computer I just reinserted the Windows drive back in after the frustrating experience. Windows has been giving me problems itself, and I really wanted to switch to Ubuntu but I need to know that this is a fluke and not the norm. I can live with this sort of thing being so uncommon I must have did something that was very strange and out of the ordinary to my computer. But if its commonplace, I want to know that too, because that's just something I can't live with.
