fairly new to linux and tried Slack as a way to force myself to learn. I am running current and when i issue the reboot command it will hang on "Restarting system". If i use the shutdown -r now command it will reboot fine. Any ideas?
View 4 RepliesI have been looking for a lightweight bandwidth monitoring app and came across bmon. It does what I need. However it has an interesting way of exiting.
when it is running and you close it down it ask you 'Really quit (y/n)' and does not shut down. I am used to just right clicking on my desktop and selecting 'leave' when it comes to shutdown time.
A few times now the laptop hangs on shutdown if bmon is open. I guess it is due to the app asking if it should shutdown. Is there a way to disable the app asking or alternatively nuke it for sure with some script on shutdown.
I could search the relevant konsole running the app and go thru the steps to shut it down but sometimes I am in a hurry and it doesn't feel like the way to go anyhow?
spent endless time trying to get multiple monitors going and have had a bit of success -- got two showing just fine. However, when I try to access the page I mention in the title, Slackware hangs hard -- only the red button will get me out. This is recent. I had dual monitors going before and that didn't happen, I think one monitor was at 800x600 and the other at some wide screeen rez. Anyway all by itself the 800x600 decided to go to 1024x768. Now, note that it all shows fine, no issues of any kind on the monitors themselves, xrandr works
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running F13 with KDE 4.4.4 on my desktop PC. A few months ago I had occasion to run Kalarm (invoked via "Kickoff" app launcher). Ever since that time, the Kalarm icon appears in my KDE "system tray" after I login. I power down my PC when I'm finished using it for the day.In an effort to get rid of the Kalarm icon, I changed my KDE "session manager" (System settings -> Advanced -> Session Manager) settings to: "on login: start with an empty session". But the Kalarm icon still appears in my "system tray" after the next reboot/login.I've also tried right-clicking on the Kalarm icon and selecting "quit". The icon still re-appears after the next reboot/login.Why didn't the session manager setting: "on login: start with an empty session" get rid of the Kalarm icon?

Now I tried to reboot the system and verify the speed of the all new packages, but KDM don't start! When I call KDM, it shines a little, show the mouse pointer and backs to term. When I call the XDM its a little different, it let me put my user and password, but after back to term too...

And all hang on the same line. This is 100% reproducible. I am not actually running a virtual machine. I don't have qemu-kvm installed. I do have separate partitions on my system. I have a /boot, /, swap, and /home partition.

Solutions tend to be across the board: not unmounting properly, acpi settings in grub, using a different shutdown command.

I added another disk in server and create mount point in fstab:
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 /opt ext3 defaults 1 2
Everything is working perfect... halt, boot, system... but when I wanna to reboot with a command sudo reboot, it hangs at the end of all initialization when it's rebooting and some number. If I remove disk in fstab, than reboot working.
This is probably not possible, but just wondering, restarted centos 5.2 remotely, hung at shutdown, kvm'ed to see what was hanging it up, control c'ed and then ctl alt del, just trying to kill the process, was brought back to the login screen, but unable to type anything. Alt-f1 switched to a different virtual console, which was just a blank screen and a blinking cursor, but now able to type things. Want to avoid hard shutdown. Is there anyway to force shutdown/reboot the machine from this console?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSchool with linux running on students' laptops, connecting via wlan to a Debian NFS and LDAP server. Every student logs on his/her profile residing on the NFS server.The clients are set up with autofs. Earlier, I had set up the wireless network in /etc/network/interfaces, but this time I decided to configure network manager so as to bring up both wireless and wired network before logon. This setup has been working on for the last fire or five years with only minor changes. Also worked with Karmic Koala, but still with the interfaces file instead of networkmanager. The Vostro is also new here, we've previously used mostly Dell Latitude D505s.
So here is what works:
1: Clients can log on to LDAP and NFS servers both wired and wirelessly. Everything is smooth.
2: While on LAN, shutdown and restart works flawlessly (and quick as a breeze, I'm really impressed by startup/restart/shutdown times, under 25 secs!).
3: Shutdown and restart also works wirelessly when doing it either from a local account or from the GDM chooser.
What doesn't work, however, is shutting down or restarting directly from a networked account connected while only being connected over the wireless network. This is what's being displayed on the terminal after it has tried tho shut down for a while:

If I try ctrl-alt-del at this stage, it says:

And then it will hang again, until I hold the powerbutton for some seconds. The unattended-upgrades part is what seems to be the culprit. I suspect it is about the wireless network not being connected any longer or something like that, but I'm not sure about how to go about debugging shutdown scripts here. I'd be grateful for pointers. I will try and see how it goes with the old interfaces file setup, but I'd rather make nm work.
All my panels and desktop and wallpaper disappeared. I don't know how to get them back without restarting KDE4. I have too many things open. I can't right click the desktop > appearance settings and I don't know what to input into alt+F2 to get that system settings menu. Any ideas?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have multiple ubuntu machines and I connect to one through an NFS share. I have done this for a few years without issue. However, since re-installing ubuntu and upgrading to 10.4 I have a problem with my system hanging when the remote shares are lost.
Basically, I can power down the machine downstairs, and my main machine then has a fit. I can not open any folders in ubuntu, nor can I shut down. If I try and shut down the system hangs, last time it hung for 8 hours before I had to kill the power.

I don't know what I've done wrong, or how I can prevent this from hanging. I have googled the heck out of this as well and can't seem to find an answer either.
I have upgraded my laptop to OpenSuse 11.2 few weeks ago. It was fine until last Tuesday, when a system crash occurred during a kernel security update. I think something went wrong with my network connection. I was working on my code and suddenly I lost my base tools such as /bin/ls and /bin/cd. So I tried to restart and got a kernel panic as my kernel was partially broken.
I tried rescue the system, however it did not work. After that I thought I could fix it by reinstalling the OS with minimal server configuration over my existing root partition. (Since I didnt have any other computer or live cd at that time and I was rushing for a demo, I could not reinstall the missing components one by one. And reinstalling the minimal server made sense then )Almost everything went fine ( i needed to do little things like creating gdm user). Now I can use my system and all my applications. But as expected, the pre installed packages in my system now cannot be seen by YaST Software Manager. Is there a way to repopulate the package list?
Another question is, I cannot restart the computer from a Gnome session. Whenever I restart or shutdown, i go back to the login screen, then I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 which starts the restart progress. How can I fix this?
I have a problem with my BROADCOM BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN... I made a clean installation of Maverick Meerkat and everything runs perfect except the card drivers... then I investigated almost a week on the net and finally the problem was solved (I made the installation of some drivers on Synaptics tool, then I wrote some codes on the Terminal to activate the light to turn it blue and the Wi-Fi IS ON AND WORKS!).
I thought everything was ok, but when I restarted the laptop, the wifi conections aren't able to be detected so I must re-install the card driver to get it active again :S. I really don't know why the card drivers works only when I install them, because restarting the system make them simply don't work.

Hovering mouse on a file can take a while, opening a text file with kwrite took several seconds and dolphin window will appear blank (like hang). Sometimes Dolphin crashed when opening file, changing directory or hovering mouse on a file.
Quick googling points to this discussion at http://dot.kde.org/2010/08/31/kde-releases-451 which suggest a bug in libdbus.
I'm running an x86 Slackware 13. When i start emacs with auctex enable, or when i launch latex, the process hang.
For emacs i have found that it's kpsewhich that try to scan my whole home (lot of Gb).
The problem is that i had defined my home directory with a trailing slash. If i remove the trailing slash, there isn't any problem. If you want to reproduce the bug try :

I am running fedora 10 on my laptop. I use a usb Western digital "MyBook" 500Gb (ext3). I am using this hard drive since more than 1 year now. Lately I run into a single problem when I read a precise file. The laptop becomes totally unresponsive and I have to manually shutdown the computer. After start-up I can find that the /var/log/message file of my previous session has grown very quickly with "[sdb] Sense Key : No Sense [current]" and "[sdb] Add. Sense: No additional sense information" messages.
I found various similar question on the web, most of the answer were hardware dependent and kernel related. I tried various kernel hoping that my specific problem would be fixed in the next one but with no success (all the kernel since fedora 10 release and two testing one: 2.6.29.5-84.fc10 and 2.6.29.6-93.fc10), I don't have access to a Fedora 11 machine.
I replaced the usb cable and check that the power supply was working correctly.
I am joining part of /var/log/message and the results of lsusb (related to the external hard drive).
After installing and activating "ATI&AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" ;in Ctrl+Alt+F2" mode, do following steps:sudo pidof X (to get pid number)sudo kill xxxx (xxxx is the pid number)Then , system hang up!If the FGLRX driver is not installed , there is no such problem

Gdm/X exit and I can see a terminal screen with a lot of info (but I can not capture it, except taking a photo). I must press reset button. It's not all times, but at least 50% I shutdown printer. I was looking logs and I can not see any relevant. Maybe this (copy some sections of /var/log/messages, remove other not revelant):

Sometimes I turn on printer to get a photocopy and turn off later, and system hand, so, it's not necesary to print or scan to get this error.
If I shutdown from X the system hangs and I have to yank out the power cord. Same on logout.
ctrl+alt+f1 hangs for a few minutes and then starts a terminal; which does not respond to the keyboard.
There are no tty.conf files in /etc/init .
But inittab looks normal to me and includes tty (1-6)
Executing init 6 from a terminal in X will reboot the system
I was thinking this might be a dbus issue, but I am not sure. I also understand some recent issues exist with SysRq sequences. May be a video card issue,,,
Other than normal package upgrades the only changes were a recent change from a VGA to HDMI cable. I can't see why that would matter

I am new to opensuse, coming over from debian based systems. However I am having an issue in which my system will not power off on shutdown. Restarts just fine. i get a missing error during shutdown, but there is nothing to relate the error to on that line. Then the shutdown procedes to The System will be halted immediately then hangs. The keyboard powers off and then thats it. All fans are still running. I have searched extensively on this forum and google.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p with 2GB RAM. When I was on Ubuntu 10.04, one day suddenly Azureus hung at the 'loading plugin' screen as it begins. I had to hard reboot my system and it(Azureus) never worked after that so I removed it. Then after a couple of months same thing happened with Adobe Acrobat reader. As soon as I opened any pdf and started to scroll, it hung. System didn't respond and had to hard reboot. I moved to foxit reader Then I upgraded to 10.10 and now mplayer hangs occasionally if I try to switch it to full screen. System stops responding totallyn Where to begin debugging from ? I can't figure out any pattern or any way to reproduce it. I haven't tried Acrobat reader and Azureus on 10.10

Is someone working on this? Gateway t-series notebook and a dell mini 9 netbook that are hanging. The netbook seems to be hanging the most.

NetworkManager fails to stop and after (during?) the postfix shutdown, the system seems to hang.I cannot access via another screen or remotely. I can't find any clues in the log files.

Note that your system may appear to hang at different points during the install but it hasn't. Just be patient." I have been staring at a blank blue screen with this blinking cursor at the bottom for 30 minutes and i was just wondering how much more "patient" will it take. for some system details. the system is clean / fist time run and anything installed on it.

It's doing this every 10 or so calls in my program and I have to press the reboot button on my computer. My program is reading from a UDP port that has messages sent to it 20 times per second. When I sleep I assume the internal UDP buffer is getting more and more filled.

First off, after installing the kernel, and trying to shutdown to boot to the new kernel, the system replied with INIT: no more processes left in this runlevel. Kernel update was performed from to the following versions 2.6.18-128.el5.img -> 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.img . The system is a VMWare virtual machine. When trying to reboot, the system passes GRUB, starts initializing and after loading the dm it stops for a few seconds at the message Waiting for new devices, show the following message:
Setting up new root fs no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults. After this and a few other messages, it displays : INIT: version 2.85 booting INIT - No more processes left in this runlevel INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast : disabled for 5 minutes And then it just hangs.
